I could see them offering the Pro XDR in two sizes (27 & 32) with both displays being more expensive (2599 & 3999 without stands) than the ASD and not having built in cams, speakers, stands.

You can waste a lot of your life waiting for future Apple products to be released.

In your position I would get the ASD now and begin enjoying it today. It's a superb display despite what some may think. The panel is top quality, the speaker and webcam are very good and everything integrates beautifully with MacOS. It may not be mini-LED or OLED, but I think all but the most discerning users will have a hard time distinguishing between it and the Pro-display XDR in most situations. It's really bright and the colors just pop. It's not true HDR but it 'feels' HDR-like in daily use.

If they do release a new display and you MUST have the newer one, you will easily sell the ASD on the used market for a couple of hundred less than you paid. They will hold their value for a long time to come based on the used prices of the old 27" Thunderbolt did for years after it's release.

How much do you think Apple will price it?

Yes, that can happen too. 27" Pro display XDR.

This rumor makes no sense.
Apple is going to offer another display with just 2 additional features at the same size??
And it will replace the BIGGER and DENSER 32" XDR???

Maybe they got it double backwards and there will actually be a 27" iMac Pro?

I will actually be mad as Apple has seemingly said on the record that there is not a 27" iMac of any kind imminent . . .
Yes, iMac Pro would come in 2023, but then panel is already in production for it?

It all depends what you use the display for. I am a developer so am mostly looking at text all day long. So sharp and crips text is very important to me. For this kind of use cases I don't see any benefit in having a miniLED display! For SD content it can get even brighter than my MacBooks miniLED display. 100nits doesn't sound like much but in reality it really makes a difference.
I am enjoying the ASD a lot and I am super happy with it! On top it just looks so good on my desk!

Hello people, should I buy the Apple Studio Display (ASD) now or wait for June to get the updated Studio Display Pro w/ Mini-led and Promotion according to this article.

The most conflicting thing is, if Apple does release a Mini led version of Studio Display at around $2000 $2300 then me buying an ASD right now would really makes me sad because it's just a difference of $700 and I plan to use this monitor for at least 7 years, but if it would be priced at $2500 then it wouldn't bother me at all.

I know, Apple is the most secretive company in the world, but some of you might have studied Apple for many years and what would you think about the pricing of new ASD w/ Mini-Led and Promotion and how much would it cost (ballpark, maybe)?
On the other hand Ming-Chi Kuo says no new mini-LED product this year - article.
So, according to you people what should I do?
Thanks.

I'd be amazed if this new version of the studio display arrived any time this year. Even by Apple's standards, that would be short sighted and would just serve to antagonise customers who've just bought the Studio Display. Unless... that new display is twice the price of the new Studio Display. Which wouldn't surprise me.

Apple rumours are still just rumours and you only have to look at how vague some of them are, especially on the Mac side of things compared to iOS.

If you need the Studio Display now, I'd buy it now, but if you really need Promotion and mini-LED or you can't imagine using a display without it, then just wait.

Thank you for such a sound argument.

Yes, my use case is also to see code/text and SDR content. Are you using your ASD w/ Mac Mini M1 by any chance?

I'm using mine with a Mac Studio but I'm not doing video/graphics work. My main requirement from the screens is to have sharp, clear text ("retina-like") on bright screens. They're great for this.

Those 4K monitors are 32" and not 27"
The Asus ProArt line has both 27’ and 32” miniLed, HDR, AdobeRGB coverage. The 27” is $3k and the 32” is $5k (the 5k is also 120Hz refresh rate). I would consider those direct competitors to Apple versions of the same displays (if you can call lower density 4k monitors competitors of of 5k/6k).

Apple displays typically have/had 500nits of brightness. And even the new MBPs cap the brightness there in normal usage as it‘s plenty enough. So having miniLED is not about getting a brighter display but about getting true blacks and therefore a higher contrast. This is actually benefitial to all use cases and easier on the eyes. Being used to my iPhone and a 14inch MBP my iPad Pro from 2018 with it‘s washed out blacks looks really dated now. I‘m pretty sure that XDR will be the standard with Apple soon so to futureproof my investment I wouldn‘t buy a ASD in 2022. Three years ago it would have been an instant buy but right now there‘s just too much development in the display market. And let‘s not forget that the panel in the ASD is basically from 2015 with some tweaks and improvments.

Thank you but I know how miniLED works.
I use both displays side by side and for my use cases I don't see any difference or benefits from the miniLED display! I don't watch movies or work with HDR content. Text looks just as sharp and has the same contrast on both displays!
And btw the display in the MacBook is not flawless. It might support 120hz, but the response time is very bad. Many tests showed that problem and I can see it too.

my use case is similar to yours and the argument id make for mini-led is that there should be improved contrast/less blooming, which should reduce eye strain when looking at text. especially light text on a dark background like a terminal window or dark theme in your code editor/IDE.

This, but I can't afford XDR at least minimum of 4 years and on the other hand my eyes don't react well to non retina. So, what are my options?

Thanks, I thought only 32" Asus monitor is there.

Then ASD is currently your only and best option! There will always be something newer and better on the horizon that you could wait for. But the good thing is, ASD will hold its value pretty well so you could always sell and switch.

With Apple it's almost always priced a bit higher than you would want to pay... ?

Take the Studio Display. Folks are losing their minds about the price as compared to other monitors - and it is expensive ($1,600 for a 27" monitor in 2022!). But it has a unique blend of pros and cons that make cross-shopping difficult, so if you want it you're going to have to pay the Apple premium.

What will be true is that when you choose to sell it, you will find that it will hold a lot more of it's value as compared to other. For me the true cost of something is the difference between what I buy it for and what I can sell it for. I generally look after things and sell them when I am done.
