OP, what was the point in asking if every time someone says no, you rebut with "but I need XYZ"? The overwhelming majority suggests the trade is not worth it. So, at this point, do it or don't. At face value, it's a terrible idea. However, if you have the cash and know you won't be satisfied otherwise, purchase it. You've mentioned several times that storage is an issue. I don't always recommend waiting. If you need something, and a solution is out there go get it. Otherwise, you'll always be waiting for the next best thing around the corner. You'll lose 120Hz, some speaker quality, flash, and true depth, but the essence of the Pro is still there.

I just read that your decision to upgrade is driven by storage, in that case you just have to decide on how much you need so its either a better screen and speakers which you may not notice (Pro) or double the storage (Air). It's not like either is a bad iPad. Luckily, both are the same size so if you already have a keyboard for your Pro it will work on the new ones.
Wow

Trying to see if it’s a good deal or get a 128 GB iPad pro
Ok. Let me try this way...

if you get the 128GB free (as a gift maybe) it’s a great deal

if you get a good discount, then it will likely be a good deal.

if you have the money on hand and are sure you won’t have buyers’ remorse, it’s probably a good deal.

Otoh, why is storing your music on a phone not an option? Why not invest some money in a NAS, store your music there and stream it?

Hello Im starting college this fall I have an iPad pro 2018 I want to trade it in and get the iPad air 2020 is it a good idea ?

I'm doing computer science
Computer Science? Is no one else wondering how being a CS student is playing into his purchase decision?

Personally, if I were doing Computer Science then I'd put that $300 upgrade(downgrade?) money towards a computer fund instead of a nearly identical iPad.

I need the iPad to take notes with Apple Pencil
Thats cool. One thing I'd love to experience is being a modern student. Handwriting iPad notes, Digital textbooks, Lightweight laptops in class. But I'm done with school and thats that.

Anyway, as for your issue then in our house we have both the Pro 11 Gen3/Gen4 as well as the Air4. For mid-range video editing I have to say that they all "feel" identical. With my hand lettering projects then I don't notice the pencil speed difference at all. Quad vs Dual speakers was only something I noticed when playing them side by side. And while I was excited for TouchID, I have to say that I'm glad my personal device is FaceID because it just seems more convenient for me.

Overall, to a new owner I'd recommend the Air because it's a fantastic machine at a reasonable price. But to an existing Pro11 owner then it's tough to spend more money in order to get the lesser machine. Especially when we're so close to a product refresh.

In a van down by the river
True I could do that I will keep that in mind
This method would allow you to do what needs to be done without throwing money out the window, just because you want to use an Apple Pencil.

Now that you are starting college, you need to start thinking about learning the value of a dollar, in my opinion.

What is wrong with paper and pencil?

Not arguing, but I dont understand this. Why discourage the use of an iPad as a digital notebook, and why is using a regular pencil a lesson on learning the value of a dollar?

My niece is in college and she takes Apple Pencil lecture notes using Notability. It allows her to record the lecture in-app and syncs with when she writes so her lecture reviewing is incredibly precise. I’ve seen her workflow and it blows me away how iPads are used in college. Download PDF’s of prof’s lesson, digital storage, OCR, document scanning, photos of whiteboard, textbooks, reduced clutter etc. I definitely dont think iPads are perfect but as a companion device then I think they are perfect for college students.

According to Alex, he wants to make a bad trade, just so he can use an Apple Pencil. In my opinion, throwing good money out the window (as he would be doing in this case) for the main reason sited, shows to me how he really doesn't need the new iPad at this time. He was looking for a solution to a problem he really didn't have. Maybe he would think differently, if he had to pay for everything himself.

In my opinion, my suggestion helps prevent the bad trade and money going out the proverbial window, while at the same time, getting the real job done, which is getting notes taken.

There is nothing wrong with iPads in college. My suggestion doesn't' prevent him from using one for said purpose.

If he couldn't accomplish his goal using the devices he already had, my posts in the thread would the been different.

Not really. As far as I can tell, he wants more storage so he can store his music locally.

I've made several device upgrades based on storage needs (pretty much all my iPad upgrades before 512GB 2017 iPP). The 2018 iPad Pro may have more bells and whistles but if it's not meeting the OP's basic usage, then he's better off getting a device that does.

It's like choosing between the 512GB M1 MBA and 256GB M1 MBP. The thermal headroom and extra features on the MBP mean nothing to me but I do find 256GB too little. I actually consider the fan to be a con so I'd choose the 512GB MBA every single time.

As for cloud/streaming advocates, fast, cheap internet is not always available. I just upgraded our wireless plan from a grandfathered shared data to unlimited. That's costing me $30 more per month ($360/year or $720/2 years) and it's something I pretty much have to keep paying forever. If I didn't have employee discount, unlimited would've been $70 more per month.

His words:

He said he is going to think over what has been said by everyone and then make a decision.

If you and others want to keep debating about what Alex should do, have at it. Debating this subject doesn't interest me. I have given my thoughts and feel good about the advice I gave.

The 2018 iPad Pro will take notes just fine. He doesn't need to switch to the Air 4 for that.

Note taking is why he needs/wants an iPad instead of Mac but the reason for swapping iPads is storage.

I need an upgrade because of storage mine 64GB is it good choice ?
apple website quoted me 445 and I would put 300 I need to be able to store my apps and music that's why I need to upgrade.
