When keeping True Tone on and looking directly at the screen I get a yellowish more Tone. Wonder if most people turn it off or keeping it?

I know I’m way too late to this discussion but hopefully people still see this reply.. I understand people hate True Tone because its too yellow, trust me your eyes will adjust to it and if you have it off it makes the screen too blue.. as a photographer you want to get away from that type of blue because if you look at portraiture it makes the subject (people) in that picture look sick like unless that’s your approach.. a warm color makes people look more natural and healthy.. with that being said if you still like that blue tint look and don’t really care about a natural look then toggle it off.. btw people on here that say yellow is better for the eyes are absolutely correct because it has been studied and researched.. that’s why there is that night shift setting now since the blue does strain the eyes especially before bedtime.. I really like the suggestion that jamin00 posted and that is how I have my iPhone XS Max set up.. (btw nice profile pic of that Audi jamin, that’s how I roll lol..)

It looks fine on my iPhone 8 but it looks terrible on my iPhone XS Max so off unless they fix it.

On and do as below. Credit from another MacRumors member but I can’t find the original thread now.

“Thought my screen tone is just way too warm when I started using the phone, so did some adjustment to make it more natural.

Go to Settings->General-> Accessibility ->Display Accommodation->Color Filter-> Switch to ON->Check Color Tint-> Scroll Intensity & Hue all the way to the right ->Adjust Hue to the left so that the screen color from Red to Purple-ish (Towards Blue). Once you determine the sweet point, scroll intensity all the way to the left. Now you should have a much better display tone.”
You’re the real mvp here .. Thank you have literally saved my life

A good way I found to make it easier to remove the warm is to switch on Classic invert first, then in Colour Filters put Intensity to max then slide the Hue so it hits the yellowest yellow you can get, the invert helps you find it as close as possible as the whole screen will get yellow, then switch invert back off and set the intensity to where you like it, on my iPhone X I set it to about 25% as I hate yellow screens.

On for everyday use like reading text in macrumors. Especially at night or in low light.

Off when viewing HDR movies with screen at max brightness and auto adjust off.

The answer is simple..... whichever setting YOU like better. The option is there for those that prefer one setting over the other

TT Off and NS Off too but I am looking to switch on TT and maybe NS as blue light is not good at all and especially at night before sleeping.

Displays are calibrated for their ambient lighting conditions. True tone does a pretty good job maintaining display color accuracy across a variety ambient lighting conditions. I don't have the feature with an iOS device but I do have it with my MacBook. I had my MacBook calibrated for the ambient lighting in my home office, True Tone does a good enough job that I don't need a different color profile for work.

If you don't need consistency across a different ambient conditions then there is no issue with leaving it off. To say otherwise is literally debating what someones most/least favorite colors are....no right or wrong answer.

Turned it off and and suddenly my eye strain issues have stopped.

A bit odd but hey, I can now fully enjoy this amazing display.

Thats pretty ironic, isn't it supposed to help with eye strain? Glad the issues are gone

I think so, I’ve also always generally preferred a warmer display, used to have my old Galaxy S7 (also OLED) configured to be that way so it’s rather odd.

Might be the combination with dark mode possibly?

Either way it’s all good now, watched the latest episode of American Horror Story on the train earlier and loved it.

Night Shift can help with eye strain. It should be mentioned that it depends on what is causing your eye strain though. A lot of people that are staring at a screen/display aren't blinking as often and making a concerted effort to blink a bit more can alleviate it. Screen a lot of screen glare can cause eye strain too, if you are trying to look through a glare your eyes are going to fatigue faster. And point in case is the user you quoted, his/her eye strain was likely due to straining to see a dimmer screen with a yellow/orange hue as that doesn't work for everyone.

True Tone on the other hand is changing the hue to match the environments lighting. While it may help with eye strain that would be completely coincidental as there is no design base for it. Since True Tone is adjusting to the environments lighting there are lighting conditions that can make it have a very blue hue too.

I like that we have a choice at least.

At night TT Off is a bit bright. I noticed when you go outside in sunlight with TT On the warmer screen turns pretty white.

I found going back and forth with TT On or Off you get acclimated to it either way.

Pick your preference and enjoy the phone. :)

No night shift. I leave TT on now.

I get a headache if I turn it off. So I always keep it on. On my X as well as iPad Pro 10.5.

I just want to point out your post is full of excellent comments about True Tone. (Especially the lack-there-of blinking.) Really, anyone with concerns over eye strain and how True Tone is involved, Should read this. Outstanding.

I like it on. Once you get use to the temperatures changes, it’s actuslly way easier on the eyes.
Same here. I tried having it off but noticed that my eyes would get tired way faster, especially when doing extended reading with white text on black as I prefer. So I turned it back on and now I don't mind the warmer tone anymore. I'll occasionally switch it off when playing a game or watching a video which looks clearly better with it off.

Very interesting, I'll definitely give this a shot. Thanks!
