Even when you switched to the Mac Studio? My laptop is on battery when inactive.

Oh that I guess is correct - my laptop is mostly off even the Mac is “activated” so I haven’t had a bug test case of the laptop being on while using the Mac.

To update: the Cable Matters USB C switch works perfectly with my Studio Display, Mac Studio Ultra and Dell Precision. Just use cables included and it’s plug and play. It also keeps the Dell laptop fully charged. I have a Logitech receiver plugged into the Studio Display so both keyboard and mouse work with both machines flawlessly.

A great deal for $60ish.
5K 60Hz on the Studio Display?

Do you know if this passes through webcam and mic data correctly? I got the Amazon one linked above in my previous reply. I noticed the webcam and mic from my LG ultrafine 5k works fine when connected to my work mbp through the switched, but not when I have it switched to my m4 Mac mini. The other mic and webcam from my 2nd LG 5k connected ONLY to my m4 mini works fine, just not the one through the switcher. And that one works fine through the switch when connected to my mbp.

Compare the USB devices in both cases. Are they connected using USB 2.0 speed or USB 3.x speed?

With an LG UltraFine 5K display, you can only get 4K60 or 5K39 with the switch. 5K60 is impossible.

Which model of LG UltraFine 5K do you have? An older model only supports Thunderbolt connection. It might work at Thunderbolt 2 speed with the switch and have USB 3.x?

Check the Thunderbolt/USB/PCI tabs of Apple System Information.app to see how the displays/cameras/audio devices are connected and at what speed they are connected at.

I’ve had no issues but to be fair not used FaceTime on my studio ultra yet. Teams on my work Dell works great.

Just came back and see about the new cable matter switch. Does it support windows with the belkin cable at 5k 60hz? Am using that most of the time, and occasionally with a macbook m1

Do you want 3 studio displays?
Because the Mac mini only supports a second screen at a maximum of 4K via HDMI.
Hi Stefan,

May I know if it's because of the windows laptop that supports up to 4k 60hz?

Since I'm using a windows desktop mainly and occasionally with a macbook, i wonder if it's possible to support 5k for my windows desktop.

The windows desktop is connecting the studio display directly with 5k output no problem using a belkin cable.

Thanks!

Just a quick update. I bought the newer Cable Matters switch mentioned previously and it is working pretty well. It flickered a few times but is stable for the most part. I'm connecting to a ASD and MBP. Thanks everyone for feedback and I finally have a stable solution.

Can you confirm if it passed through a displays webcam and mic properly to either system it’s switched to?

Thanks for the feedback. I've added this to my list...

I can report that the cable matters switch I got works great. No issues using it with my m4 mini pro and m1 MacBook pro. It passes through the audio, mic and webcam of my LG Ultrafine 5k perfectly fine to whichever system it's switched to. The cable matters switch works when connected to my OWC TB4 switch as well, which will help free up some some of my m4 mini's TB ports. It also doesn't require external power like the first switch I bought.

The original switch I bought (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CB3JXWJ6?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3) -- for some reason only passes the audio, mic and webcam data through when connected to the MacBook Pro and not the mini.

My only negative thing to say about it is the huge orange sticker warning about possibly needing external power on the switch. It required using a hairdryer to remove because the sticker pulled free from the glue leaving a mess on the plastic.
