That took 14 hours and 20 minutes to complete. That included the help of my 20yr old son.

In the process I seem to have lost either the KVM or the power supply for it. Going to try replacing the power supply first. In the mean time I will have to manually swap my two displays until I can get this working again or replaced.

@Amethyst1 The LG display is reporting a resolution of 2160x4096.

It definetly has a blue cast and I cannot seem to get rid of it. That's fine. I was intending to use it for Finder windows only. And I will leverage the blue tint by using blue backgrounds.

Looks amazing! What's it like running a vertical display in the center instead of having one or more horizontal displays at the center?

Also, do you feel like you're in mission control? ;)
I'm using the center vertical display for drives and some Finder Windows. It's also going to have the palettes from my apps (Photoshop, Indesign, etc) so those are front and center. That's going to allow me to finally work two documents at full stize without palette interference on the 30" displays. We'll see how it works out.

My wife already referred to it as Mission Control long before this so I'm just adding to it, ;)

I visited my local Starbucks this morning. This shop is not the one closest to me anymore (the one closest is a former Kentucky Fried Chicken), but it is the one I started taking my kids to when they were little. It's kind of sad, because that SB shop no longer exists. It was replaced with a remodel some years back and again in early 2024. I've been in there a few times since February when they reopened, but I'm just now mentioning it.

The new shop is largely built around to go orders. You can go in and place an order, but if you want to drink it there you are standing. They are using 2/3rds of the seating space they had previously (plus the bathrooms) for operating space. So, it's a small entrance area now. This store (99th Ave and Camelback) largely serves traffic off the 101 freeway, apartment residents nearby and traffic for the Cardinals stadium. They also get traffic from Camelback Ranch down the street (where Scooter's Coffee is set to open). Camelback Ranch is the spring training stadium for the LA Dodgers.

So, all the way around they see heavy traffic because the street itself sees heavy traffic. I understand why they basically said 'screw it' and redid the store to cater largely to drive-thru and pickup. They still have outside seating, but you aren't using that from late May to early October!

I'm glad I still have pictures and I'm glad I made friends with the baristas there during the time we frequented the place. But that chapter is now solidly closed.

Just quoting myself to follow up on this. So, I ordered an adapter which was too big of course. To account for that possibility I also ordered a backup switch (same brand and model). I did that based on the fact that the seller was including the power adapter. I was not surprised when the box did not include the power adapter.

So, I contacted the seller and they found the adapter and shipped it. I'm still waiting for it. In the meantime, I ordered a different adapter because apparently I'd done this before. Same vendor. This one works. It seems then, that I broke the power adapter itself when moving stuff around.

Took some time today and reset the KVM up. This time around I included the keyboard/mouse!

This time around, a case of three of my favorite things…

MacPro, coffee and RPGs. The Homeworld RPG hardcover book I ordered yesterday has arrived.

About 28 years separate this coffee mug and Mac…

2024-05-03 03.31.54.jpg

My oldest coffee mug, purchased by my parents for me at Knott's Berry Farm in 1982. It had my name on it (spelled correctly) and that's the only reason I wanted it. Actually liking coffee came much later.

It was really hard finding anything that spelled my name with a 'k' on it in the 80s.

I have an old 70s Deka Disneyland plastic mug that Ive had forver. I kept pens and now colored pencils in it, so am weary of actually drinking anything out of it now LOL. We as a family never went to Disgneyland, so I dont know exactly where it came from, but it was my brothers and has been with me for 30+ years now.

…shows my love for Rolemaster, an RPG I got involved in in 1994 and have loved since. I tracked down this mug and bought it from whatever vendor was selling it. Took it to work and the office klutz (a narcissistic ad rep) who cared more for herself than my personal space knocked the handle off. I was so mad.

It too has filled the role you describe, pens, pencils, and so on. Sigh.

I like how you have 2 “emergency” payday bars sitting there, ”just in case”

Huh. Reread this just now…

Between the time I had posted this and now, I've been back there a couple more times. I ran in to one of the baristas that used to be there when we were regulars. That would have been around the early 2010s. I guess he made a career out of it. I didn't recognize him at first, but he sure recognized me!

Funny how things go…

Has anyone use french press coffee?
this contraption was great until recently as the technique is tedious and coffee taste bland.

anyways i love this thread!

We have a French Press and I've given it a few tries, but just can never seem to get the ratios correct to make any sort of decent tasting coffee.

If you scan through the whole thread there is a conversation on that in there somewhere.

PS. The secret to this thread is two of my (your) favorite things. While one of those has to be an Early Intel Mac (because otherwise the mods will move this thread) the other can be anything you want. Doesn't have to be coffee - although that's a big theme here. :D

What coffee are you drinking this morning BTW? I'm about to fix some Seattle's Best Post Alley in a few minutes.

I purchased a new brewer - a programmable Ninja Brewer With a removable water reservoir. It brews a very nice pot - really the only detractor is the carafe is smaller at 12c vs my preferred 14c. The removable reservoir was a must so the 12c carafe was the trade off. Very happy with it so far.

I picked up a 5# bag of my favorite coffee at Costco. They sell this local ABQ brand in all the major retailers but Costco is the only one that sells it as a 5# bag. Medium roast, low acidity, so very smooth for all day drinking.

Been thinking about one of those Ninja coffeemakers. But have to stick with our current one until it finally gives out. We had a run a couple years ago where I was buying a new coffeemaker every six months because no amount of cleaning could make it work right or brew decent coffee. The one we have now has been working fine.

But the next time I'm looking to replace the coffeemaker I'll probably look into that brand. Either that or a Nespresso. We already have a Keurig Express Essentials, but that's primarily for later in the day when we only need single serve.

We had a Cuisinart a long time ago that made excellent coffee, but the carafe broke and so out it went. I've been trying to get back to that since. The current brand is also Cuisinart and it does make good coffee, just not the same.

If Ninja makes the same removable reservoir design but with a 14c carafe, I’d get that one vs the 12ver but otherwise I am very happy with this Ninja brewer. The one I had (a Hamilton iirc) before this, technically it still worked but I was sick of its slow performance plus it also had the propensity to fold the filter in on itself as it dispensed hot water into the basket and would then overflow & make a big mess. Lastly the carafe wouldn’t pour right & the way the top opened up, it was literally impossible to pour water from the carafe into the reservoir again without making a mess, so I was done with it & happy to upgrade to the Ninja for daily programmed morning brews. I am a big fan of Nespresso machines for evening coffees as is my wife. I’m sure we’ll pick one of those up along the way but they are pricey. I’m actually surprised she hasn’t bought one yet as the single cup focus of the Ness is more to her drinking style where as my preference is volume. Anyways, friends of ours have had one for many years so I’ve been the recipient of many a cup from the Ness & they are very nice - I am sure you would appreciate it.
That is a nice macbook pro- and kudos on the blur effect on the display screen!
i might replace the aero-press coffeemaker with a Ninja since the thing is not up to par anymore.
The IPhone 14 did that. I just needed to point it in such a way that the phone camera focused on what was in front so the screen stayed out of focus. That is an 09 MBP. It was a gift from the IT guy at my old work. They were recycling old hardware & he knew I liked retro Macs & he asked me if I wanted it. I always wanted this model back in the day as it came with better I/o - a card slot & FW800 etc. than my 08 alum MacBook had. Anyways, I picked up a black case for it & a new battery & it stays upstairs as a surf/media/email/retroarch portable. Stout little mbp.

what email program do you use for the MBP 09?
I use SeaMonkey.

IIRC when I set it up initially, most everything synced without issue except my outlook acc via imap which kept flagging as suspicious and would not sync. I had to log into my outlook acc, find the “suspicious” action (which was SM trying to sync up to it) and verify that it was me. PITA lol. :D

Microsoft has a blurb about it somewhere on their outlook page stating that it is a known issue and they're "working on it". Of course it's still an issue now long after I initially set it up. Oh well. At least they have a work around. :p
