I finally purchased a thing of Starbucks coffee!
the price was -$3 less than Seattle Bests but the taste lacks a punch.

thankfully the MBA2010 still had one!

Try the Sumatra blend. It's still a dark roast, but has a better flavor.

PS, possibly you already knew, but Starbucks owns Seattle's Best. ;)

I was looking for the year this happened (2003). Found out though something I didn't know and that is that Starbucks SOLD SeaBest two years ago (2020)! To Nestlé!

So, all this time I've been thinking SBX owned them. SMH!!!!

It seems to me there was some discussion of this on an earlier page of this thread. But it's hard keeping track of this kind of thing!

I remember buying Seattle's Best regularly, and then reaching a point where it was...disappointing. Not so much strength, but it wasn't as good. Quit buying a while. Started buying again, and either my taste has deteriorated, or else the quality has gone up. Although I don't know if it's as good as it was--but good enough that I buy it regularly, since it seems decent enough and is comfortably (for me) priced.

Yeah, knew when I was typing that I was probably repeating myself.

I think the quality went down when SBUX bought SBC. While Starbucks probably wanted to discontinue the brand, I think they realized what kind of PR headache that would cause them so they did the next best thing and weakened the coffee. Probably allowed them to sell it as a 'discount' coffee while still making money off it. Probably, they thought that over time sales would diminish enough to justify discontinuing it. Pure speculation on my part though.

In any case that didn't happen, but I'd also assume that the quality went back up once Nestlé bought it. Nestlé sells other coffee brands, but unlike SBUX, Seattle's Best was never in direct competition with them. Building the brand back up would only benefit Nestlé. And probably enough time had passed that no one outside of Seattle even knew the history of the brand. I mean, it took me two years AFTER the sale to realize they'd been sold! And I pay attention to this stuff!

Anyway, again…speculation on my part.

It's a shame, because there was a time I could go to a SBC coffee shop and buy espresso based drinks. Even when they'd declined to just being inside Borders I could still do that.

I can't remember exactly when the dip I noticed occurred, but it was late Starbucks era at the earliest, and could easily have been the Nestle area. That said, it wouldn't be surprising if the hadn't been significant change when Starbucks took it over.

It's possible that what I noticed was just bad luck of the draw. Or issues of the moment (say, a supply issue of some coffee bean).

Seems to me that nothing else is better, expensive, but not better than Seattle's Best.
The price is 8.99 a bag here at Publx, Florida, either 12 0r 16oz, which was 4.99 in 2020.
im drinking a Starbucks Dark which is good but not as strong.

yes our taste buds are the same, so you are not experiencing anything unusual.

bottoms up!

Peace…

And no, not the view, although that's nice and one of the reasons I always try and get a window seat. But the sound. I know a lot of people don't like the 'noise' aircraft make, but to me it's always been music - especially at take off.

But at cruise, it's a lullaby.

AND a good morning to you, too!

is that lady image from kiil biil?

that is a nice early Intel Macbook air holder/platform/doohikee.
The lady is Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel from the Lord of the Rings in the Amazon TV series. I don't watch that show, I'm not interested in what Amazon is doing to LOTR canon…but…Photoshop CC 2022 splash screen…

adobe-photoshop-cover-image-v0-e0co1cffzei91 copy.jpg

I simply found the image that the artist created (which Adobe licensed for PS CC 2022) and used that.

Here's the stand, pretty inexpensive. Works for iPads too.

Mods! Not my auction, I'm not selling anything!

I was reading a piece talking about audio equipment. it started with interesting talk about coffee. The coffee talk is only the first four paragraphs of this (about 400 words total).

Quick quote:

Not long ago, I lost patience with coffee.
Before that, I'd never quite made it to coffee-nerd status, but I had all four wheels on the onramp.

Yeah they goof up my spelling all the time (they use the common English spelling) BUT I have no expectation of them ever getting it right as I’ve not taken the time to build that relationship and tell them my wonky donkey Welsh spelling.

I saw that and my first thought was “Hey somebody is paying attention”. Service might not be dead in the US after all :)

Finally!

2024-08-31 12.45.42.jpg

They actually opened on Thursday, a day earlier than expected. But we (my wife and I) did not get there until today. This is their latte, which is pretty good. I'll try their cappuccino next. Any plans I had to simply walk over there though are gone. It's solidly drive-thru, no walkup window at all.

How green of them. Over the past couple years, we had Dutch Bros coffee pop up all over town to much fan fare. I am not a fan of their coffee drinks - all way too sweet, BUT every single one has a double drive thru window on one side and a big open walk up window on the other side which is almost always occupied with folks on foot, bikes etc. it’s a bummer they didn’t add a walk up service window. Being able to walk over as a destination is so much fun on a pleasant evening.

Dutch Bros has been big here for over a decade now, but the one time I went there was a walkup. My objection to Dutch Bros is not their coffee (too sweet or otherwise), but the fact that they think they know better than the customer. You ask them for X and their response is 'how much' or 'how many' because THEY are going to put that in the drink for you.

I asked for three sugar packets, they INSISTED on putting it in the drink themselves. Would not give it to me to do myself. And that was the last time we went to Dutch Bros.

Black Rock Coffee is getting big out here now though. They are like Starbucks in the sense that they are chain coffee shops. I like their cappuccinos well enough, but I really just go there for my wife - she loves their Mexican Mocha. Which is interesting, since she's Mexican-American. :D

But now that Scooters is finally open and next to my house I can just ignore Starbucks period.

My favorite place to grab a cup is a fantastic family owned cafe called O'beans here in ABQ. Wife n I have been going here since they opened their retail space - great family and people. Dad roasts the coffee, Mom runs the cafe and makes lattes and Daughter is usually out running their mobile cafe VW bus but she is sometimes in the cafe when Moms out. Probably been going there for 8 years about now? I am also a fan of Satellite coffee which has grown up alot here in ABQ over the years.

I typically get the Abuelita at Obeans which is a whole milk mocha latte, hot with the addition of New Mexican Red Chile and cinnamon. Pretty delicious. At Satellite I get the Black Velvet which is delicious in a coffee sledgehammer sort of way. I have never had Scooters coffee before but if its a chain and y'all have it in AZ, it's only a matter of time until it hops the border into NM.

Quite some time ago Starbucks changed their rewards program into something no one asked for. At that time, I stopped taking the kids there on the weekends and started looking for a new place. That's when we found Colados.

Colados is Latina owned by a woman who got together a business plan and executed it with some grant (I think) from Cox Communications (my ISP) that was supporting local business. Coffee is great there, I actually prefer it to anywhere else. Problem was that until they opened their second location it eventually just became standing room only. Colado's is closed on Sundays, so that was part of the problem. But it just became a real hassle to juggle coffee, crepes and laptops/tablets/phones. Not to mention those just hanging around waiting for a table to open up. So, we stopped going there and just haven't been back since. It's in the Fry's grocery complex with a McDonalds and several other restaurants around so I pass it frequently and it still seems busy to me.

Which is probably why I usually end up at the Starbucks that is right there next to it. SB bought the building of the former KFC. One day I'll get back in there.

EDIT: I guess they opened a third location.
