Last night, just because I could, I snagged a box of Dunkin PSL (K-cups). I'm drinking it now. It's neither great, nor absolutely horrible but I probably won't buy another box. I don't normally go in for all the autumn drinks but I thought last night 'what the heck, I'll try it'.

What always gets me though is the clamoring of the people for the autumn drinks around this time. I don't get it. Curling up around a cozy fire with a warm drink in your hand is just a jarring thought when the A/C is still running and it's a 108º Arizona day.

Going to be 115º on Thursday. Not sure the whipped cream on that PSL can take the heat!

Luckily it has exited the triple digits here in ABQ (It gets hot here no doubt but still no match for that next level AZ heat mind you) and we're now solidly in the 80s. Heck it already snowed in Glacier Park Montana Last week LOL.

Yeah, I'm hoping we see a decline soon. Sometimes it doesn't happen until mid-October. There was a heat wave going on the week that my son was born and that was late October. Last year I got to use my coat maybe once, SMH.

Pure?
yes that spot on our globe gets HOT!
the D-Backs announcer Brenley always included:
"And we have AC!" while they sold baseball tickets last year
when the temps go to 120ºF

i live in the tropics and always try to get the real temps so i can enjoy a 4 degree cooler day like today.

Dunkin' mug (Starbucks Sumatra) and the Firmament soundtrack this morning.

2024-09-02 07.16.22.jpg

Cyan Worlds made a very beautiful game (Firmament), but it suffers from how they chose to tell the story as well as some really out there elements, puzzle problems and one particularly tiresome activity. Nonetheless, there seems to be a particular fascination for the actual story for me and I gravitate to the Mentor.

Of course, I've never played the game, just watched the walkthroughs on YT. But that's pretty much how I do things (games) now.

Yeah, that was the story on the news at the time I took the picture. :D

More Mechwarrior RPG…started in the What have you done with your EIM today thread.

This is the second expansion book (Technical Readout 3026) and intended to give PCs (Player Characters) in the MW universe some options when purchasing equipment. The first expansion book was solely about Battlemechs, the primary focus of the MechWarrior RPG.

This book was purchased at a comic book shop inside South Coast Plaza Mall in Costa Mesa, CA. Probably 1990. My friend and I had found this particular shop because it had a large selection of RPG books, particularly FASA. This was a 45 minute trip, so after making our purchases we'd have lunch at McDonald's next to the shop before going home.

SCP itself has changed in 30+ years, so no doubt everything else there has changed as well.

I should mention right now that I have EVERY FASA book produced for MechWarrior/Battletech as well as every novel FASA published in this universe. Every 'magazine' and comic as well. But all in this time frame. I have the 2nd Edition MW book and that's where I stopped because that edition blows.

FASA later redid the game and released new books, comics, novels, etc. I have NONE of those.

Below is the spec for the Sternsnacht Heavy Pistol, a very popular sidearm for PCs in my group of friends. Comes from the 2026 Tech Readout (above).

More research on the Mac Pro, which is the second item I 'love' in this thread. This information coming from the update version of the game: https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Sternsnacht_Claymore_Heavy_Pistol

Which, I believe, is NOT the current version as the 'Classic' reference is to a RPG book published in 2007.

This morning it's three of my favorite things…

2024-09-20 05.52.09.jpg

One…of course the Macs, 2011 MBA and my 2009 MP. And two, also of course, the coffee. This morning it's a combination of Starbucks Sumatra (brewed earlier) + our daily morning coffee, Wide Awake Seattle Dark. Wide Awake has replaced Death Wish for us (some time ago) since DWC changed their formula at some point and it just stopped being good.

But, three (and you can see it next to my cup) is my Ridge Wallet (Titanium, Matte Black). Got this wallet in December 2021 and have been carrying it since. A week or so ago I got a second one (Aluminum Gunmetal) and I'm alternating between the two.

Both my wallets have the cash strap on the back, but I borrowed off of someone I saw and put the money clip in the front. This is a hack, not a standard Ridge wallet setup. But it lets me hang my wallet on my pocket (with the wallet inside my pocket). Not a traditional use for a money clip but a really neat hack. So thanks to whomever thought of that out there.

Did not see that one coming…

facepalm_deja_q.jpg

Story of my life though. It would seem that I am virtually the only customer at my local Starbucks that orders the Flat White. Therefore, my drink order clearly identifies me to all the baristas there. And since I don't order anything else. 🤷‍♂️

This would explain how the baristas now all know my name and how its spelled and the overt friendliness. Which I don't mind, but suspected nonetheless, was due to my order. It so identifies me that I was recognized by one of the baristas at the grocery store, unbeknownst to me. Now I need to pay attention so if some random person comes up to me and says hi, I might know if it's one of the baristas or not.

You can't find the Flat White on the menu board, but because it WAS on the menu board at one time it's a valid SB drink. You just have to know it exists first.

SMH. Obscure Australian born espresso drink for the win!

After working in service and retail for almost a decade, you end up remembering the faces of very few folks unless they’re good, kind regulars — the kind which remind you there is something to look forward to when punching in for another shift at the grind. (Or, at the other end, the very worst customers, but those get another, ignominious mnemonic fate.)

So long as none of them are creepy, to have staff remember you, even whilst at other shops, is a kind of high sign of praise.

I recently watched a documentary on SB — so is this part of the secret menu then? :D
Sort of, sort of not.

It was first offered in SB cafes in January of 2015. It was on the menuboard and at that time the kids and I were still going to SB. So I tried it. More espresso, less milk and less foam. I've never understood a latte and a dry cappuccino. It's coffee you're supposedly buying right? Not milk and foam, or at least not that as the major component of your drink.

At some point SB took it off the menuboard. But I like it, so menuboard or no menuboard I order it. And I am a creature of habit, so my order never changes. The Flat White is still in SB's drink system (there is a button for it), so therefore remains a drink you can order. It's just not on the menuboard anymore. No idea why, it's my favorite espresso based drink.

You can kind of fudge things by ordering a cappuccino with four shots and 'wet'. 'Wet' means more milk, but less foam. And I'm really not a fan of paying for foam. You can't drink foam and it takes up the volume in your cup that could be used for, I don't know, actual COFFEE maybe?!

So that's a fudge for places that have no idea what a Flat White is. And I even have to educate some baristas as to what a 'wet' cappuccino is. But it's not a Flat White.

Yeah, that's kind of the thing…

I just wasn't sure what was going on. For the last few times I've walked in everyone seemed friendly and intent on my name. I even had one of the baristas asking if I wanted my actual drink before I ordered it.

I've done nothing (that I know of) that would distinguish me from any other coffee drinker ordering an espresso based drink. Other than the fact that no matter what the season my drink is always hot. It can be 120º outside, my drink is hot.

So, I asked if I was the only one ordering my drink and they said 'yes'. So, now I know why all the attention. I was just confused as to why.

One of the baristas is new, and has now had formal training on how to make a Flat White that she otherwise would probably not have known about. She's an older woman who I perceive as being very happy she's employed and wants to stay that way. So I imagine this was one of those "I learned something today" kind of things, IDK. I could be way off base on that, but I do know she now knows how to make a Flat White.

The thing is that I usually come in after dropping of my wife for work and my kids for school. So, no idea what anyone is thinking. That said, all I will ever be is friendly. Been married for 27 years and I have no interest in anyone else other than my wife.

I find it interesting that "flat white" came up! Some book I read recently (I think a Simon Brett mystery) had a character who ordered flat whites at--IIRC--Starbucks. I don't honestly think I'd heard a flat white before that, but I haven't explored espresso drinks that much.

You have a good point!

It's been literally years since I last had a cappuccino. A lot of the reason is that I'm cheap and they cost $$$$. (For that matter, I seldom get coffee in coffee shops or coffee stands. I can make it, myself, for a lot less!) And, now that you mention it, a certain amount of cup space is wasted for the foam.

You’re steadfast, a constant — not a variable. You’re in there, same location, consistently.

I've done nothing (that I know of) that would distinguish me from any other coffee drinker ordering an espresso based drink. Other than the fact that no matter what the season my drink is always hot. It can be 120º outside, my drink is hot.

No, you have done something: you order the same beverage, consistently, no matter the season or weather (how all of y’all survive in desert AZ just boggles my brain, but convo for another time!). This is, repeated over time (along with your face, name, and maybe even how you carry yourself), becomes highly memorable. That you’re (I’m guessing) a kind customer likely aids in your being memorable.

Trust when I say when you’re on the other side of the counter/cash, you look forward to anything (and anyone) welcome to break the monotony of the working day of serving hundreds of (mostly) random people.

You welcome the reminders of folks — the “regulars”— who rely on you to deliver exactly what they need, and that which they need being usually consistent. This is not a novel concept! And in a way, it’s probably somewhat reciprocal: you probably wouldn’t want to chance heading to another location to order a flat white, where staff on duty might have forgotten how to make one (since they might not be veterans from when it was on the menu). So you return to the same location — whether due to proximity or knowing you’ll always get what you ask for, without worry.

So, I asked if I was the only one ordering my drink and they said 'yes'. So, now I know why all the attention. I was just confused as to why.

See above. :)

Good! You’re locking in your legacy patronage at that location. :) It’s getting to be less common with time.

A long time ago, but well within our lifetimes, one could be in a town where one was a morning regular at the local diner, ordering the same breakfast before going about the rest of their day. Servers in diners also enjoy their regulars, because they know what to bring them, and it’s almost like working on autopilot, leaving more energy and brain bandwidth for single-appearance customers.

The thing is that I usually come in after dropping of my wife for work and my kids for school. So, no idea what anyone is thinking. That said, all I will every be is friendly.

They don’t need to know, other than “this is your morning beverage before work begins” order. They probably have a few folks who, like you, are their welcomed regulars.

Been married for 27 years and I have no interest in anyone else other than my wife.

Being a regular customer has nothing to do with marriages. :p

This seems like a disclaimer. Does your wife browse this forum by any chance? :D
LOL. No, not at all. She's a regular on certain channels on YouTube though. :)

She's a teacher, who technically is only about 2.5 years in to her career. When she was going through school for her bachelor's I had to pull her into the modern era technology wise. You would not believe how long it took me to break her from using Microsoft Word as an 'operating system'. Tech isn't her thing, although she now understands a bit and is much more willing to try.

I was just putting that out there because I'm not what anyone would call socially well-adjusted and can be clueless.

It's my wife that first introduced me to espresso-based drinks. At first I really did have a problem paying a premium price for what is essentially two or three shot glasses of coffee and a whole lot of milk and foam.

Which is when I learned about wet cappucinos. I'd rather pay more for milk and less for foam. But then, I also found out that you can tell them to add shots. So, four shot glasses of espresso.

The difference, I learned much later, is that these shots are CONCENTRATED coffee. It's not drip coffee poured in to a shot glass. And the combination of the milk, plus any syrups or sweeteners make the whole concoction pleasant to drink.

Up until a few years ago I was an avid user of sugar and cream in my coffee. High blood pressure has resulted in a few changes and I drink my coffee black now and no sweeteners. But at the time I discovered the Flat White, I was using that stuff (sugar in my espresso based drink). The Flat White was the very first drink I had no need for sugar in. It just tasted right all by itself. It's that combination of coffee, milk and microfoam.

And so, despite foam, I will continue to pay the premium for these types of drinks while trying to minimize foam. But lattes I don't typically care for because the ration of milk to espresso always seems more weighted towards the milk.

using Microsoft Word as an 'operating system'.
I had chuckle at that! Although I can easily see it happening. The thing I remember--and hearing from people who did use computers competently to get tasks done, but weren't necessarily very knowledgeable about details--was calling a desktop or tower computer a "hard drive."

She's a teacher, who technically is only about 2.5 years in to her career. When she was going through school for her bachelor's I had to pull her into the modern era technology wise.
My father taught at the college level, and it's interesting to think back at how reluctant he was to embrace new technology. In the 80s, he had some intellectual interest--I suppose because computers were becoming important--but he had the line that they had no relevance for a professor, except those who "reused tests." In the 90s, he did start using word processors, but at one point--when everyone else had moved to Windows--was still using DOS.

Meanwhile, at times in the 90s, he had the audacity to make comments that my decision to continue collecting and playing vinyl LPs was "living in the past."

The difference, I learned much later, is that these shots are CONCENTRATED coffee. It's not drip coffee poured in to a shot glass.
Not just concentrated, but also a different brewing process (with more force than drip coffee).

I remember a high school French teacher claiming to try espresso we could just make drip coffee and double the coffee. Er, no...

But lattes I don't typically care for because the ration of milk to espresso always seems more weighted towards the milk.
I don't think I've ever had a latte, but I suspect that I wouldn't particularly like them with all the milk.

Maybe if I ever can pry my wallet open enough, I'll try a flat white...
