To be fair to FedEx - recently there was an ice storm in Memphis that I think closed the airport for a while. I had a package that was in transit (shipped 2 day) that arrived in my city later than it otherwise would have, assuming the flight was delayed. At first FedEx said it would be delayed a day but they ended up getting it sorted and out to me on-time. OTOH, I have a package that was shipped UPS and it seems to have been mislaid. It was supposed to be delivered today but now shows Monday - assuming they find it somewhere.

My 16” MBP (ordered 1/30) was picked up in Shanghai today. I hope the weather in Memphis stays nice for the next week. Of course I’m impatient and now wish I had spent the $8.00 for expedited shipping - I don’t need it before the 10th (expected delivery date), but now that I’ve ordered it, I sure want it.

Oh I sure hope this math stays true for the one I ordered yesterday (with $8.00 shipping, sorry friend). I'm supposed to get it 2/14 - 16 but if it gets picked up 3/4 days from now, I may have it next week. That would be incredible.

I'm not seeing how I'm being unfair to Fedex. I'm summarizing my experience over the past several years. They have a lot of issues in their system that have nothing to do with an ice storm in Memphis or other weather/temporary situations:

  1. Turned off the API for apps like Deliveries and others, so deliveries can only be tracked on their website
  2. Delaying deliveries 50-60% of the time
  3. Not ringing or knocking, then leaving a note on the door to pick up delivery at the local Fedex location in the evening, followed by making me wait 30 minutes for the truck to come in and then not having the item available
  4. Chronological history listing that's not in chronological order
  5. Worse tracking options than UPS (can't check for all deliveries that are coming to my address)
  6. Overall slower delivery than UPS
Many of these are completely unforced problems caused by poor management.

Several of these (1, 4 and 5) can be fixed immediately server-side, 2 and 3 are issues of communication and process that can be fixed by more clear communications. Number 6 I don't know. I think the reason they're overpromising is because it allows them to charge more.

I did pay the $8 and look what it got me. Poor communications, delays and having to see people without expedited delivery get theirs much earlier.

As I write this, my MBP is "Out For Delivery" with a delivery time of noon. It is exactly noon now. Being fair to Fedex.

Okay, now it's "2/3/2023 by end of day".

Fully expecting nobody to show up and them keeping this charade up until after midnight, to have it then go to Monday.

Sorry you are having such a bad time of it and I really hope that mine doesn’t end up like yours. I can relate in many ways - I’ve just reached out to a company asking about their procedure for something that UPS has apparently lost. It was supposed to be delivered today but was last seen 3 days ago. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that your computer arrives this afternoon.

My M2 laptop is stuck in Memphis at the moment; it's been that way since Wednesday. Fedex website says that even last night they were experiencing delays due to extreme weather.

I live in Alaska - we really don't have a lot of options other than USPS, UPS, or FedEx. We also have UPS and FedEx Hubs here, but that doesn't help when there are issues in the Lower 48 that affect shipping.

It makes you wonder.. Every package has to go to MEM for processing with FDX, and either ONT or SDF for processing by UPS. It would suck if they all make the stop at ANC for processing and fueling, then clear customs at MEM or SDF, then have to fly back to ANC.

It actually came at 12.29 pm, yay! Writing this using it. All four efficiency cores are busy installing software while the other ones are waiting for tasks :).

Overall it was one day later than what Apple initially gave as the delivery time range. I still think that the criticisms are valid.

In any event, thanks to everyone here for their kind words, it's one of the first-worldliest problems to have when your loaded MBP is a little delayed. Hope everyone else will get theirs really soon.

It’s finally released and on its way. Fedex says it will be here on Monday.

I read that warmer weather is starting in Memphis, so hopefully no one else will be impacted by the delays. Good for the employees there too; I read that some weren’t being paid for lack of work.

Forgot to mention that the box was a little damaged. Never had that before.

Overall, after the dust has settled now, the original range Apple gave me was 1/31-2/2, and actually it was delivered 2/3. Not sure what the $8 for early delivery were for, but I got 3 days of AppleCare added on because Apple expected it to be here on Monday, so I won't be pursuing this.

One thing I don't get is why they don't have some BTO/CTO configs ready to go at release for these machines. At least configs like "fully loaded" or "full memory with 4TB SSD" should be safe bets to have some inventory before launch.

FedEx stops in Anchorage then heads to Memphis to clear customs, while UPS does the Anchorage - Louisville hop for the same reason. The biggest reason so many cargo flights pass through Anchorage is because it's the most cost efficient path between Asia and the Lower 48. If you ever look at Flight Radar 24 and just look at flights heading to or from Anchorage, the sheer number of planes in the air between Anchorage and Japan, China, etc. is staggering.

Sounds reasonable. I gather you checked it out thoroughly. Now I have to ask a basic question - I’m not familiar with the abbreviation BTO/CTO - I gather that must mean higher end configurations?

My computer is now in Memphis, got there this morning (Saturday). I wonder how long it will stay there - the expected delivery date is Friday. And UPS found my missing package, delivery to be Monday.

Life is good!

I look at FR24 and FlightAware all the time. I was going to be an air traffic controller, but aged out prior to getting to the academy.

Most flights from there fly close to the great circle route, to save time and fuel, and ANC is one of the most suitable airports to accommodate all of the flights headed between Asia and N. America and Europe.

A question for those who have already received computers shipped FedEx from Shanghai - I didn‘t see anything on the FedEx tracking page that says a signature would be required. But the email I got saying it shipped gave me the option to pre-sign (print a form, sign and indicate where the driver is to leave it). I had figured that I wouldn’t need to do that since I was going to be around Friday the 10th, waiting with lots of anticipation. However, my computer arrived at a sorting facility near me this evening (the 4th). FedEx is still saying expected delivery Friday, but are they really going to leave an expensive computer lying around for 5 days waiting for the expected delivery date? I have a doctor’s appointment Monday morning and a dental appointment on Tuesday - should I go ahead and do the pre-sign form/procedure?

I received my first MacBook Pro a bit over a week ago. (I immediately returned it unopened since I decided to order a different configuration.) FedEx did just leave it on my front door. It arrived 4 days earlier than the day Apple said it would. We really didn't expect a delivery that day and only discovered it late that night when we happened to open the front door. I did not select any option to pre-sign on the FedEx website.

Putting that pre-signed form on the door is like screaming "HELLO EVERYONE I'M EXPECTING A VERY EXPENSIVE DELIVERY WHICH WILL BE LEFT BY MY DOOR FOR YOU TO TAKE WITH MY COMPLIMENTS!". You're not going to have any recourse against anyone if the item is left at your door and later stolen.

When Fedex came the other day, they actually didn't ask for a signature either, but I hadn't use the pre-sign form, so if my MBP would have been missing, I could have requested another one from Apple.

BTO/CTO are built/configured to order configurations, meaning they're not one of the 2 or 3 configurations you can get in the stores. On a side note, I've heard that you can get fully loaded MBPs in some Apple Stores, but have never been able to confirm that. (Also, I don't want an 8TB SSD as long as it's $1000 more than 4TB.)

Thanks for the info, both about the abbreviation and for the fact I won’t need to leave the note on the front door. My front door doesn’t face the street so I would be less concerned than most people, but really would prefer not to leave it out.

And the tracking on FedEx’s site doesn’t make sense at all this morning. Saturday there were several scans that indicated it went through Memphis and a final one at a destination sort site near me. There’s now a tracking scan dated this morning that says “International shipment release - Import” in Memphis. That was one of the status notes from Saturday. Now I’m not sure where the computer is - did it really go back to Memphis? The plot thickens…

Update - I shouldn’t try to figure things out first thing in the morning. I originally immediately scrolled down to the tracking details section where it said Memphis. When I looked again just now, the tracking still says the same thing, but the top where it shows current status says ”International shipment release - Import, Phoenix” so not Memphis. It helps to read the whole thing! Whew!

Shipped overnight, expected Thursday! (That would be 1 week after ordering, BTO M2 Max w/64GB, 1TB, original delivery 2/14 - 2/16, Apple still says 2/13, lets see how it goes!)
Interested to see how it goes for you. I ordered a BTO M2 Max 64GB/2TB a day ahead of you but Fedex and Apple say I'll receive it on Friday. I hope you get yours at the earliest opportunity.

Both Apple and FedEx still say that my computer is supposed to be delivered Friday also, but I’ve been watching the tracking details don’t agree with that - FedEx shows it out for delivery today! I’m expecting to see it this evening, hopefully before dark. Mine is a 16” M2 Max 64GB/4TB.

Yeah, I've been watching mine as well, but haven't had any movement since it arrived in Memphis on Friday. Let us know if you get yours today. Best of luck!

FedEx says my laptop will be here today by noon and it's "on time". It's now 1PM and doesn't even show "out for delivery". I wonder how late they might deliver. I'd rather they push it back to tomorrow rather than just leave it on my front step at night. Last time they delivered, they didn't even ring the doorbell or knock.

Did you follow the first delivery you returned on the Fedex website or did it just show up unexpectedly?
