10 months!!?? They have 30 days to reach their target of $32 million, else all contributions are refunded.

another guy(on this thread) said that to me, but i did a research after replying him and found out that only 28-27 days are left to raise the hefty amount, i think they're doing pretty well.

Unless you read my posts last year, then you know nothing. My S2 Skyrocket was either 4.3 or 4.5 inches, I can't tell, but I KNOW that the size got to me, I even DROPPED it a few times because of it. You know, at least with the iPhone, there will be accessories that will be made to handle the bigger size if it does happen.

Right now I have a 3.5" Android, and it's perfect. I know that times are changing though, and I'm going to have to learn to deal with bigger sized phones in the future.

Just because I don't like what YOU do, doesn't mean I'm a sheep.

And I'm still going to say that 128GB is too big of a drive to carry around in your pocket. For a tablet, sure, but a phone? No way. I'd rather get a Passport external drive and a OTG cable, or even one of those wi-fi drives.

I'm sorry :( Yeah, it takes a lot of adjusting, and now Samsung has accessories too? But always remember, android phones can be used for storage, so it is a phone/EHDD.

Canonical has just announced a $32 million Indiegogo compaign for their new smartphone, "Ubuntu Edge." It is a dual-booting Android and Ubuntu (full desktop) phone and the specs are available below. The estimated delivery date is May 2014. New perks have been added and the phone can now be had for $625, $675, $725, and $830 (the first 3 are limited supply). There is also a $1400 option for two Ubuntu Edge phones.

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ubuntu-edge

Specs:
-Dual boot Android and Ubuntu Mobile OS
-FULL Desktop Ubuntu when docked
-Fastest Multi-Core CPU available
-At least 4GB RAM
-128GB Storage
-4.5-inch, 1280x720 Sapphire Crystal Display
-8MP/2MP Cameras
-Dual-LTE, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, NFC
-GPS, accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, barometer
-Stereo speakers with HD audio, dual-mic recording, Active Noise Cancellation
-MHL connector, 3.5mm jack
-Silicon-anode Li-Ion battery - ("A nanowire battery is a lithium-ion battery with a stainless steel anode covered in silicon nanowires. It replaces the traditional graphite anode. Silicon, which stores ten times more lithium than graphite, offers the potential for increased energy density, thus reducing the mass of the battery." - Wikipedia)
-64 x 9 x 124mm

I really love that design and this is shaping up to be one beast of a phone.
I would LOVE to have this phone! The specs are very high end. This is no mid range device. But I will wait for it to actually get produced and available on my carrier before i would pay money.
Designing something and planning and doing press releases are one thing. But then to actually produce the device and go through acquiring the hardware and then manufacturing it are worlds apart. Then to go through testing and releasing it with what was promised are huge undertakings.
But 4GB ram 128GB storage with the fastest available processor! This would be a very high end Android phone! Then to dock and boot to a full Ubuntu desktop! I might not ever do that but it would still be awesome.......

The idea is cool and pushing forward with new innovations is admirable, but it's pretty difficult to pledge $600 for a phone that would have mid-range specs by today's standards and is due out almost a year from now ...

With $830 you can get a phone off contract, a tablet and a low end laptop/netbook/chromebook
Nexus 4 - $300
Nexus 7 - $230 (getting that new one ;)
Samsung Chromebook - $250
Total $780

Nexus 4 at $300 has only 8gb storage and the RAM is 2gb. The Edge has 128gb storage and 4gb RAM and will have faster processor. More comparable phone would be the iPhone 5 and this costs $849 for 64gb storage and only 1gb RAM.

Ubuntu Edge looks like heck of a deal to me at $830.

And now, thanks to major industry backing, the price has been lowered to $695 for the duration of the campaign, making it a bargain.

For those curios about how it compares to current high end phones there is a comparison site here: http://wizzardss.com/edge/#compare

Today we broke $10M in support, and soon we'll have broken the crowd funding record!

The Ubuntu Edge has an unlocked bootrom and we are encouraged to hack/tinker with it.

Yesterday, Mark Shuttleworth posted this message:

A message from Mark Shuttleworth

Hi everyone

Thanks in large part to all of you, the Ubuntu Edge campaign response has been incredible. In just over three weeks more than 20,000 people have backed the project, from individuals giving a single dollar right up to Bloomberg’s fantastic $80,000 contribution. Along the way we’ve broken crowdfunding records, including the fastest project to hit $2 million (7hrs 59mins), and the highest ever 24-hour total ($3.45 million). We’re now on the verge of an even bigger milestone as we approach the all-time crowdfunding record of $10.27 million.

Speaking both personally and for the team, the more time we spend on this project, the more excited we get about the possibilities of this new class of device. And as the news has spread we’ve seen industry thought leaders coming round to the idea that convergence can be a real force, and that this project represents a new way to underwrite innovation.

That led to some significant engagements with suppliers that enabled us to drop the price below $700, without compromising the specification. And now that we’ve seen next-generation phones from other major names, we think the price-performance of the Edge is off the charts -- it offers real value. We’re even more convinced that it will take a new approach to unlock the next wave of mobile innovation.

Whatever happens in the next nine days, the Ubuntu Edge is already making a difference. This campaign lets enthusiast consumers signal their interest to a mobile industry that caters overwhelmingly to the mainstream. It’s making it clear that we’re no longer satisfied with minor updates; we’re looking for true innovation and we’re ready to pay for it. And that message is getting through.

So in a sense, we can be proud of what’s been achieved already -- but we really want to hit that $32 million! We’re going to need a huge push, a surge in awareness that builds momentum to carry us over the line. No one here is giving up while the goal remains achievable, and you’ve all gone out of your way to add your voice to the chorus. So I’m writing to ask you to take to the Twitterverse and other social networks to encourage like-minded types to join you, and me, and companies large and small, in backing the Ubuntu Edge.

As they say, the future is already here, it’s just not widely distributed. We’re working to put it in the hands of 40,000 people, to start a revolution. And you’re there at the start.

Mark Shuttleworth

Founder, Ubuntu and Canonical

Everyone who wants one of these phones should just support it right away, and also spread the word. :)

It won't be released.

I'm a fan of the Ubuntu OS, but I wouldn't shell out $600 for vaporware. Once it is released and certified as a quality product, I will buy one.

Whilst I can understand the reluctance to shell out for "vaporware" you have to in order to get this. It's a limited edition that isn't intended to go to market. If you don't buy one now then it probably won't get funded, but if it does then the only place you'll be able to buy one is on ebay. It isn't going to be a mass produced phone.

Then you really need to support it. If the money isn't raised the phone won't get built. Pledge for Edge

A news flash:

The world record for most money ever collected by a crowd-funded project has been broken by Ubuntu Edge now.

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/08/ubuntu-edge-campaign-updates-new-perk-breaks-record

There is still a long way to go, only one in three phones have been claimed so far. On the other hand this new record will help spread the word.

So if you haven't looked at it yet:
  • The worlds most advanced phone come May 2014 - the phone that is you desktop computer too
  • Dual boot Ubuntu Touch and Android (vanilla) with an unlocked boot loader making it very tinker firendly.
  • It will only be made if the campaign succeeds
  • It will only be available through the campaign and NOT sold in other ways afterwards
  • If the campaign should fail all the money pledged is returned
  • If the campaign succeeds and you get your Ubuntu Edge you can still return it withing 28 days for a full refund
  • It is backed by semi-billionaire Mark Shuttleworth who has pledged to cover any extra costs that can arise, should the campaign succeed

All of this makes a very attractive package that is virtually risk free. Ff you are looking to live on the bleeding edge of technology, or simply want to impress you friends or colleagues, this is your chance!

I don't think it'll reach its kick starter goal.

People have been predicting the rise of Linux for over a decade.

As it was in 2003, few care. There is simply no mass clamoring for a Linux phone, or really Linux in general outside of some very dedicated enclaves or tinkerers, IT pros, and hardcore computing enthusiasts.

Are you serious?!?

Linux phones are currently dominating the smart phone market. The most common flavor of Linux phone is called Android, which is one of the two OS:es that this phone comes with.

If android is straight Linux that makes ubuntu redundant.

Yeah I know it can get technical about commonality and divergences.

May as well call OSX and iOS unix while you are at it.

I feel like I have to step back and explain things with simpler word.

This phone, the Ubuntu Edge, is a device that comes with two different phone OS:es. Most people will no doubt use it with Android, but for the adventurous there is also Ubuntu Touch, which is a phone OS version of Ubuntu (in the same way that IOS is a phone version of OSX).

Regardless of which of the two OS:es the user has picked, the amazing thing with the Edge is that it also comes with a full desktop OS, Ubuntu, that can be used at the same time. That's right - with out rebooting the phone. Just dock the phone to an external screen and start working. Attach an external keyboard and mouse, or use the phones screen as touchpad and keyboard. The desktop OS can naturally still use the phone functions like calling, texting, address book, calendar etc.

This would be similar to having an iPhone that is also shipped with OSX and can run IOS apps at the same time as OSX programs.

This is what the Edge is about. Convergence. The phone IS your desktop computer too. For most people it would mean that you don't need to lug a big laptop with you as long as you intend to do you work where there is a stationary screen. And there are already portable screens with built in batteries for those that need to work on the go occasional. This is going to be the future.

This campaign wants to show the phone industry that this is something that people want.

Apple has chosen to stay with the two device approach. Bring a phone and a laptop with you. Microsoft has chosen to adapt the desktop OS so that it will work with a touch screen most but not all of the time, but still you should buy a phone and a separate Surface.

Here you will get a phone small enough to be a great phone, but with power enough as a desktop for most people.

So your words about Android making Ubuntu redundant are quite the opposite from the truth. What Android is lacking today is Ubuntu :)

Well said, AndersINorr! :)

There is also a chance that the deadline may be extended.

http://wizzardss.com/edge/#news

I think people who wants this smartphone should just plunge in, there is no loss regardless of what happens. By supporting you're increasing the chances, and especially if you use a little time to show others what they can get.

Stephen Fry, the British actor, just sent out a twitter to his 6 million followers:

Help make it happen for 'Ubuntu Edge' http://igg.me/p/ubuntu-edge/a2b4/499351 … #indiegogo via @indiegogo Exciting project I reckon!
This could very well turn interesting. I can see from his profile at IndieGoGo that just in a few minutes 3000 people have clicked on the link in the tweet. It will be interesting to see how many actually support the project.

Oh, and Stephen has pledged $699 for an Ubuntu Edge.

I don't think that it will be possible either to get $20M in four days. But now that the campaign has started to move, it is possible that Canonical (Ubuntu) chooses to prolong the campaign. It is possible to do so at IndieGoGo, and it has been known to happen. However I only think that they will do so if there is a real chance that the campaign can be concluded.

So anyone that feels like they want to THINK DIFFERENT, please join in

Are you sure you don't work for Ubuntu edge ? Newbie, overly positive pledge $ your money now now now or you will have to scour ebay style threads...... Pushy, little obnoxious, and ignorant over people's genuine fears they pledge not an insignificant amount of money and this thing doesn't make it market in 2014 leaving you screwed.

Sorry but he's a multi millionaire. He could wipe his arse with $699 and wouldn't batter an eyelid.

A lot of us live in the real world where $699 represents a significant investment especially with taxes, families, mortgages, bills to pay.....

Seriously you are sounding like the salesman who won't take no for an answer!

Next you'll be telling us that there's a good chance if we pledge $699 it may finally find a cure for cancer!

This is crowd-funding. It is about selling something that does not already exist. Over 23,000 people have so far chosen to support this project. Those of us that do are trying to explain to others why and what our dream is about.

And this is a high end phone. $699 is a steal for a phone with 128GB. In the US an Iphone 5 with 64GB storage cost $849. This forum is mostly about Apple computers, phones, Ipods and Ipads, neither of those things are for free or cheap.

Why are you not filling all the other forum threads with you anger and envy too?

Its nothing about anger or envy. If you were not clearly planted here by Ubuntu edge in order to try and drum up business like some snake oil salesman you would know that many of us here spend plenty of money on technology each year. What we don't do is try and make out a non existent product is anything but a risky gamble for anyone pledging on it, we have more respect for other people and their own financial circumstances without trying to make them sign up to something that may end up being non existent.

Even if it should end up not being created, in that case, your pledged money will not be charged. Should it be created and you get the smartphone and for some reason don't like it, there is also a 28 day return period and refund. I don't see the risk here, really. Only an opportunity. This is how crowd funding works, and I have participated in a fair few others already on kickstarter. I've not had any issues yet.
