Real cold in jersey today. I might not leave the house. Day off from work...spend it in bed.

12 degrees (2.2 with the windchill!!!!) from a neighbor in Central New York. Also we are in a Winter Storm Warning, expecting 4-8 inches of lake effect snow, which is not horrible but lake effect snow is usually that very heavy snow. I am just sick of winter and want spring and summer so bad, because it has been a rather brutal winter this year in terms of the extreme cold (polar vortex) and the amount of snow we have got this year, we had been spoiled the past few winters with relatively minor winters. I am telling you that the "Farmers Almanac" is usually dead on, and certainly was this year!

It is 28 right now in the middle of a blizzard. Wind gusts up to 70 mph, almost white out conditions. Multiple roads closed and lots of accidents.

I saw the reports of that "Bomb Cyclone" effecting the plain states. In some places up to 97mph wind gusts, which is terrifying! Here in Central New York, we recently had a storm with 65-70mph wind gusts and that was bad enough, but I could not imagine basically 100mph wind gusts!

Best wishes and stay safe during the storm!

Colorado Springs airport had a wind gust of 96 mph!

I am definitely not digging this whole "bomb cyclone" thing going on outside atm. Time for another round of shoveling :)

Edit: Governor had to mobilize National Guard to help 100’s of stranded motorists in Kiowa and Elizabeth I heard.

CSPD is reporting over 500 drivers stranded in El Paso County. Also, the Colorado State Patrol is reporting that a trooper was struck and killed today near Roggen.

Just saw that blurb about the trooper. Sound like it happened this AM. I guess it must have been snowing around Roggen earlier that it did around my neck of the woods. We had rain until about 8AM, turning to snow around 8:30. Roads didn't start to become dangerous until around 10:30 or so. Roggen is quite a bit NE of me though. Sad news :(

I was just reading about this storm in the Capital Weather Gang section of the Washington Post, they have a long piece about it. I can't imagine what winds of a category 2 hurricane are like when they happen in winter with all that snow. Be safe all of you who live in the many states affected...

I noticed that your avatar thing says you live in the Catskill Mountains (if that is true) and I live in Central New York...Utica, NY to be precise. You probably have heard of it. Anyway, we live in the snow belt and we get bombed all the damn time with storms and lake effect snow. I know the Catskills are downstate, southeast...so you do not get as much snow as we get up here in CNY. However, I know that when we get nor'easters, that part of New York, including NYC can get quite a bit of snow.

To everyone effected by this "Bomb Cyclone," I wish you all the best and pray you all stay safe!

Jefferson County Library had a sense of humor about the storm, tweeting this photo along with the message "Things have escalated. Stay Indoors." :)

No snow-blower or do you live in an area where you do not really need them much? Where I live there are times you could use your snow-blower multiple times a day, for 5-7 days. So damn annoying, especially when it is super cold out as well. It is sad when you consider 34 degrees to be "warm."

Really sorry to hear about the police officer, I pray no one else dies or gets hurt. The last storm we had, the governor shut down the New York State Thruway, which is runs west (Buffalo area) to east (Albany area) and then down south to NYC. I am surprised your state did not take similar precautions, or maybe they did but it was one of those things where they tell you stay off the roads and travel at your own risk and if you get in an accident you are basically on your own as first responders will not come out to help.

Praying everything works out for all of you. Tonight and tomorrow will probably be a great tv/movie/Netflix day.

I do have one, a big Ariens model. But honestly, it is usually more a pain to fire it up and use it than it is to just shovel the snow, so it only gets used if the snow totals are big. This storm had high winds and blew a lot of snow around, making visibility near zero, but we only had 4-8" in the Denver area. My area got 6". A couple of rounds of shoveling 4" at a time aren't that big a deal :)

High winds and zero visibility where the bigger issues....

Yeah, wow that is crazy. When we had our last storm there were tons of trees that either uprooted like the one in your photo, or they lost most of their branches. 4-6" is not bad at all, considering the feet of snow we get in one shot. What really sucks it when we get a foot of snow, and then a quarter of an inch of ice or so. It is a pain in the a** to clean your car off, shovel, and snow-blow. I also hate driving after a decent snow fall or ice, not because I am afraid, I am confident in my driving ability. It is the idiots on the road that are not paying attention that I fear will cause an accident and hurt themselves or someone else (including me) or hit me and mess my car up...which would piss me off beyond what words can describe!

My mom sent me this photo a couple of months ago, it seems like our dog love this type of weather. He doesn't need to undergo dog bath and grooming during this season. As for me this is my least favorite season.

Having grown up in NJ, NY, PA, the snow there is usually a lot different than here, with the exception of Spring storms. Usually, the snow here is a dry, light powder. Easy to shovel, easy to remove, it doesn't leave much slush, ice, etc. behind. Then typically it melts off within days. We will have a foot of snow and then a couple of days later, you will barely know it snowed. Especially if you have a southern exposure as we do.

But it is another reason why I generally shovel, rather than use the snow blower. It generally isn't that much work and just kinda blows around anyway.

Denver has had some big snow storms historically, the last huge one March 2003, where areas were reporting anywhere from 32-82", but average snowfall for the year is typically around 55"total for the year. Not like Vail 189" annual average. Average winter temps are around 49F and sunny. Lately, we have been getting snow, several days in the mid- 50's, snow, several more days in the mid-upper 50's. Shoveling snow one day, out on my motorcycle a couple days later :)

Haha, my beagle (now long deceased) used to love going out and running and rolling around in the snow. He would get a scent of something underneath the snow and just dig a huge hole until he got to whatever scent he was smelling...sometimes nothing that I could see, or sometimes a dead mole or something stupid that he did all that work for just to then walk away from it. He sure made me laugh though with some of his winter antics.

Winter is also my least favorite season. I love the area I live in, but in the winter I wish I could take off to Florida or California and get away from this ridiculous cold and snow! Oh well, part of life.

My mind
I still have no power from the storm here in Denver. It went out yesterday about 7AM, came back on at three and when I woke up this morning, it was out again.

Waiting for Xcel to show up because there is a tree branch that snapped on a big tree in my back yard. It's still hanging in the tree where it snapped but the only thing keeping it there is that the other end is being supported by the power line going into my house. That is why I am sure I have no power.

Man, that stinks. Fortunately, I didn't loose power. I hope yours comes back on soon and you don't have any frozen pipes.

Oh wow. Our power went off twice yesterday, but only for a few seconds each time. Just enough to make me have to reset the clocks on the oven, microwave, etc.

Wind blew out the pilot on the gas fireplace, but otherwise no issues.

If you need any assistance with anything let me know!
