They might be stuck in a tree. It's really gusting out.
Yah, I won't mind when this gift from Lake Huron and far points northwest manages to get far enough east so it's just a problem for Atlantic fishing.... gusts of 60mph in the forecast here (and warnings from utility companies about the possibilities of being without power for days) are rather unsettling, since it's single-digit weather trying to move in now.
At least points in the westerly half of NYS are pretty well clear of 55-60mph gusts as the cold front overtakes what was originally a southerly flow. It's been an interesting 24 hours with some thunder and occasional torrents of rain here before the snow squalls moved in. Now we're almost back to standard February coldness except for the still high winds and those northerly counties caught in true blizzard conditions, they're really in for it with ongoing lake effect snow expected off Ontario.
On the winds, any that are sustained for a long time in one direction and run over 40mph with higher gusts can take an unendurable toll on trees and certain structures. Our high wind warning period in total here for the current gig is almost 36 hours. I keep looking at the couple of older maple trees along my driveway... and I'm going to have an arborist look at them after this year's sap and mud seasons. The prevailing wind should take those trees towards my garden, not the house, if they do fail sometime, but I don't care about that any more because the wind does have other options. My option is swapping those trees out as firewood (and some dough) in exchange for peace of mind!
