There has clearly been a huge downside for orders of Built To Order versions of this new laptop. Has this been the case for other new Apple products?
My previous buying behavior has been less stressful, for which I’m very grateful.
Before the much hyped iPhone 12 & 16inch M1 MBP, I favoured buying behind the curve & picked up a heavily discounted end of line iPhone 7 RED 128 at an airport & then, in 2017, opting for an off-the-shelf mid-2018 15in MBP discounted online & readily available at local Apple Store. That meant I was not up to date with the latest but did have instant gratification for devices that kept me happy for years.
Then I allowed myself to be sucked into the hype for the iPhone 12, obsessing about which model and what spec. (It was the promise of a even better camera that did it for me.) Then the matter of price & availability. I confess that I fretted about all those choices, but I was still determined to buy outright & have a separate SIM contract. In the end I jumped on an EE deal which promptly delivered an off-the-shelf iPhone 12Pro on a monthly contract whose total almost matched the cheapest SIM-free offers. So more instant gratification even though locked in for 3 years.
Meanwhile, I had the over-long wait for a 16inch M1 laptop …… I know, I could have bought a 13inch M1 or the 16inch Intel, but there were rumours that soon there would be a laptop with keyboard and ports to match my 2015 MBP.
Finally, speculation turned to news and then the launch and opportunity to buy.
But what model, what specs & what prospect of delivery - and all at fixed prices again.
I decided once more to go for an off-the-shelf model with specs that were probably OTT in terms of my immediate needs: the 16 M1Max with 32G & 1Tb. Off I went, late at night on Launch Day, to struggle with Apple Store online - competing with/against thousands of others - and I eventually placed an order.
Then delivery dates started to slip.
Surprise and delight when someone here mentioned Costco. Never shopped with them before but I followed it up by searching the UK based outfit. There I saw the very model I wanted with an earlier date of delivery - the earliest I’d seen, so could it really be try? And it was cheaper - even with the advance ‘joining fee’. I even phoned for confirmation of the offerl.
Fortune smiled & neither the price nor the delivery date were scams.
Summary. I went for an OTT off-the-shelf model, but I also got lucky. The result was that I avoided a lot of stress and have been enjoying more instant gratification than otherwise might have been the case. Of course, this was at the cost of buying a model at a higher an increased price than a BTO, that offset only by my privilege of having cash in the bank & being able to afford the the warm glow of cascading my mid-2015 MBP to a grateful daughter. Had I not the money perhaps I would be back to buying behind the curve again, using that trusty mid-2015 MBP for another year or two.
I do hope this doesn’t come across as smug. My intention is to highlight the dilemma in choosing that sweet spot of the Built To Order model and the compromise in buying something off the shelf.
