Interested to see what tonight brings. I've been happy with an M1 MBA this year, moved over from a 2017 i5 MBP.

Would have to be significant to tempt me, I think. Love the portability of the MBA and the quote on the front page of MacRumors this morning is that the new MBP is 'thick and heavy'.

Maybe a hundred or so more, but it’s the risk of being scammed I’d take less to be safer.

Mine are next to each other. I have to roll my desk chair from one side of the desk to the other to do any more than a quick look on each screen.

I'm a photographer. I have my admin tasks (emails, to do list and CRM) on one screen. Then my editing on another.

Ah, that's 1m40 wide then. Super wide I don't usually have many windows open at the same time. I'm a firm believer that nobody can really multitask. So I only have that when I'm comparing 2 documents, or getting info from one to type into another. 27" is plenty for that.

But then there's Logic with a billion windows each needing a lot of space

Don't see the downside to a notch - i'd take an "edge to edge" (or as close as) screen with a notch over the heavy bezels we've had for the last lord knows how long!

Only dilemma is now if the ‘Pro’ and ‘Max’ aka 16 and 32 GPU cores are available on the smaller Mac… do I or don’t I! Can imagine that adding a few hundred more on . I think the fomo might get the better of me if it’s offered.

Reality is I could probably manage with a baseline version if it’s 16/512 but this machine needs to last me a long old while

I'm now questioning whether I need the 32 GB RAM upgrade on my proposed order.

My current use case suggests I don't - PHP coding, running a local dev environment including Laravel Valet, NGINX, MySQL, PostGress etc. My IDE PHP Storm I believe is Java based and can be a bit of a resource hog.

I'm getting by on 8GB on a M1 Mac mini currently - only occasionally do I see memory pressure hit yellow or red.

My thought was I would be future proofing in case I ever needed to spin up Docker instances or Virtulisaiton.

Part of me thinks if I am paying £2400 for the entry level 16inch machine - what's an extra £400 for a RAM bump!

16 GB has been the 'standard' RAM config for many dev machines at my employer. I do wonder if 32 GB will become the new 16, so now is the time to jump on the upgrade train ?

Of course, potentially waiting until next year for delivery for a BTO isn't particularly appealing.

I’m going for a 16”, 32Gb Ram and 2TB drive. If the upgrade to 32 cores GPU is no more than £500, might take the plunge. But have a feeling it will be more around the £800-£1000 extra…

That much for the upgrade would be eye watering!

This is the most exciting I’ve been for an apple event since probably the iPhone X launch. And even then it probably wasn’t on this level of anticipation! Feels like apple have in the most clamped down on leaks

When I bought my mac in 2014 and didn't upgrade the 8GB RAM, I never thought I would do virtualisation. Then, less than half a year later, I was running a Linux VM for work and between 2015-2018, I ran a Windows machine on a regular basis.

Strange thing is, I had more problems with my 256GB storage than with the 8GB RAM. Linux and even Windows actually get by pretty well with 4GB, and the remaining 4GB were pretty okay for macos, too.

But then I'm considering 32GB/1TB over 16GB/2TB myself because it's easy to add an external drive, but I can't add external RAM.

Precisely.

Presumably a fast external SSD via Thunderbolt is going to be pretty damn quick? Assuming all the OS stuff lives on the internal SSD etc.

I'm saying this as I assume the internal SSD, RAM and CPU are all on the same bus; therefore this is an implied performance boost straight away we would want the OS to benefit from.

I hope it’s not that much, but it is Apple we’re talking about…

Apple will give the the ‘starts from..’ price during the event and we can pretty much expect $=£ (maybe -£50 like the iPhones).

All the additional prices and upgrades will be when the store opens up
