Finally ordered yesterday. 2007 iMac appears to be in a bad mood now and taken early retirement! It's failing in Mail and Safari use which it was fine for last week.

Hi Guys

Looking at getting myself my first Mac and was just looking for some advice. Popped into the Apple store today and had a play around and i must say i loved it! I really liked the 27" as well but its far to big for my needs and would be wasted for what i want it for.

My main uses are mainly for some very light gaming, games such as Football Manager etc. I'm learning HTML and web design so that's going to be the main use of it for me. I do have a windows laptop but i wanted a static desktop as i feel much more comfortable at one compared to a laptop. Looking for something long term and have really got to love Apple.

Im looking at the iMac 4K 21.5", i think i would like to upgrade to a fusion drive and get myself the track pad after using it today i found it much better than the wireless mouse. Am i right in thinking i i want to do any form of upgrades i would have to buy this through Apple direct?

Welcome any advice on my first purchase

Thanks guys

Just pulled the trigger on a top of the range max spec 27" iMac for my Dad , he didn't like the mac mini I bought him so hopefully this will be more to his liking.

Going from a 2006 iMac 2 Ghz no doubt he will be impressed by the speed ...

Hope so LOL

I confess that I have a top of the range 27" iMac in my buy bag but I cannot bring myself to press the button given that my existing 2009 IMac i7 seems to cope well with most things. That said, LR and Photoshop are a bit slow but photography is a hobby not a work necessity. I am not sure that having a play with a new IMac in an Apple Store would do much to aid me in my decision.

Guys quick question, my order of the 27" retina iMac changed yesterday to shipping to store. How long does it takes approximately to get to the store? I'm asking because it says in about 9 days and that seems quite a lot of time.

Ordered the 27"
  • 4.0GHz QC i7, TB up to 4.2GHz
  • 8GB 1867MHz DDR3L (2x4GB)
  • 512GB Flash Storage
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395X w/4GB
yesterday after spending a couple of weeks working on a 2014 model...( After Effects mainly)

Ordered 32gb of the Kingston Hyper X 2133 Ram after reading the ram thread on here..

Still looking for a decent external media drive for work files ( SSD or fast Spinner? Thunderbolt or USB3?)..and a general drive for timemachine/music/movies etc...so if anyone has any tips on that or on set up's for After Effects on the iMac, please share your thoughts...

P.S-still going to need that new rMBP when/if it arrives...hope I can resist the rivals/don't get too desperate with the old laptop packing in!

I have a Freecom Quattro 3 external HDD http://www.freecom.com/products/hard-drive-quattro-3/

Very impressed with it. It's fast enough on Firewire800 at the moment, so it should be lightning when I hook it up to the new iMac through USB 3.0 when it arrives (exact same spec as you as well!)

By the way, it switched to 'preparing for dispatch' this morning after ordering it late on Tuesday.

Edit - now dispatched!!!!

My 2011 fully spec'd 27" iMac had some sort of failure last night, won't go beyond a gray screen no matter what.
I'm taking it into the Genius Bar this next week, BUT I've been looking at the new 5K iMacs and oh are they tempting, can you change the ram yourself or is a it a big job now?
I maxed my ram out from crucial rather than the massive price from Apple, although the price seems less offensive now, have Apple changed the amount that they charge for ram?

I caved and ordered, ended up just getting the apple ram! Got a decent discount though

Cheers for that, I'm might go for that or the maybe the seagate backup plus?

http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/extern...hard-drives/performance/backup-plus-fast-hdd/

The Seagate has a 2.5" hard drive. The Freecom is 3.5" and should have a larger cache and be faster as a result.

2.5" drives tend to be described as 'portable' and the 3.5" ones are 'desktop'.

The Seagate's speed comparisons are against other portable drives.

I had to nip out for literally 10 minutes and missed the bloody delivery. Grrrr

Mine came this afternoon, very nice too :D

Just set it up and installed a few bits and bobs. Can confirm the Kingston Hyper X 2133 32gb RAM is in and working fine...I'll delve further tomorrow!

Just thought I'd add a tidbit on gaming (not at all technical so I'll mention it here rather than one of the heated benchmark threads)...

GTA V runs MUCH better on the M395X than last year's M295X.

Last year there was noticeable stutter when there was extended pressure on the graphics, most likely caused by the throttling due to the heat levels. Also, the fan was near enough permanently on at full RPM.

This year there is no stuttering and I rarely hear the fan.

Extremely impressed. I'm sure everyone recently ordering one will not be disappointed! Keep us posted! :)

Just ordered my 5K, what settings / options did you run GTA on?

Cheers

Hey guys, hope your enjoying your iMac's still, I decided to join you finally after considering upgrading and waiting for the right machine for the past two years.

I ordered the 27" retina 5k i7, 4gb 395x, 512 ssd, 8gb ram (ordered an extra 16gb from Kingston) + trackpad 2. Hope this is an awesome machine.

First Apple computer hardware I have had, currently running a Compaq hackintosh from 2007 core2duo 1.8ghz, 2 gb ram, 50gb SSD and GMA 950 integrated graphics running lion, so hope it's a good upgrade ;)

Hoping very much to get it before Christmas, as this is my present to me. Currently UPS have it stated for Monday delivery but I will only be home in the morning, I will be home on Tuesday so am hoping to get a delivery then. I will be at work till late though, so hope I can rebook the delivery using the tracking number for Tuesday?

Nervous about missing this lol!

I wish i'd seen this thread was here a few weeks ago. I ordered mine on Black Friday via KRCS - they had a 12% discount on all Macs.
As it was a BTO (i7 with 3tb Fusion drive) they initially estimated delivery on or after 22nd Dec :(
But in the end, it arrived on Wednesday, shipped direct from Apple (I feared it was going to go to KRCS first as so take an extra few days to get to me, but no so).

It's an awesome machine. A quick test in handbrake (video conversion is one of the only things i've found that maxes out all the cores) and it completed a transcode in 1/3 the time that the same file took on my 2009 i7 iMac.

One issue i've noticed - when it goes to sleep, often overnight, the external usb3 drives spin down and when I wake up the mac, it tells me the drives were removed unexpectedly and not correctly ejected. [edit: just spotted someone already mentioned this: Late-2015 iMac USB3 issues - is it just me? ]

I bought my iPad Pro 128 from KRCS on Black Friday too for £735. I saw the iMacs with the discounts which was good but will order from the Higher Education site as the discount is the same and the Apple Care upgrade is cheap.
