I don't use Google Authenticator anymore for Gmail - it now asks you to sign in on the Gmail app on another of your devices ("Yes, it's me") which is so much less hassle.

I also bit the bullet the bullet a few years ago and moved to 1Password - every one of my 300+ passwords is now a unique long string, similar to Safari suggested passwords / Keychain, but able to hold multiple fields per item. I think it's now subscription-only, but a fabulous product.

You can still buy a licence for version 7 of 1Password, but you cannot get the next version 8 when it comes out, unless you buy another licence. The licence is not cheap but, IMO 1Password is the best password manager there is.

The only bit I'm a tiny bit confused about now is the Apple Watch... I'm guessing that in all instances (Encrypted iTunes backup, cloud, direct phone to phone migration (wired or not)), all require the watch to be unpaired prior to setting up the new phone...?
When you unpair an Apple Watch it creates a backup image on your associated iPhone. If you then migrate from that iPhone you will have the latest backup available when you re-pair your watch to the new phone.

  1. Unpair Watch
  2. Backup iPhone
  3. Set up new iPhone from backed up old phone
  4. Re-pair Watch to new iPhone
If you use the new iphone migration tool that basically compresses steps 2 and 3 into a single step.

ETA: I have done this successfully using iCloud backup and iTunes backup in the past, I’m sure the migration tool will also work spot on.

Thanks for this.
I generally do an iCloud restore, but then spend ages looking for (or resetting) passwords for email and apps etc.
Hmm ... general email passwords (for standard IMAP accounts set up in Apple Mail) should be part of the backup. it's only when using third party apps which have a "device specific password" that need to be set up again.

Oh, and about banking apps ... I guess it depends on the app. Some of mine seem to need me to use my password to log in each time I add/edit/delete a finger print (I use touch-id as my phone doesn't support face-id). So I assume moving to a new phone triggers this too.

There have been some questions about what's copied over when migrating to a new phone. I'm no expert but this is my understanding.

There used to be, but now there's no difference between restoring from iCloud or iTunes, so long as the encrypt backup option is enabled.

All passwords will be restored; they'll either be in the backup or, better, will come from the iCloud keychain. However, anything that uses a device-specific password (such as gmail) will need to have a new device-specific password generated.

Google Authenticator is also tied to the device. This is a HASSLE. Using your old phone, log into each site using the authenticator and generate a new QR code. Scan this with the app on the new phone. if you're gonna keep your old phone, scan it there too, to keep it up to date. Having a duplicate of all the authenticator codes is about the only reason I still have my old 1st gen iPad mini lying around - just in case I end up "bricking" my phone during a beta install or whatever.

Apple Pay / Wallet Credit Cards will need to be set up again. That's the case even if you restore back to the same phone (whereas things like Google Authenticator and gmail passwords work fine if restoring back to the same phone and are not migrating to a new one).

There are strong and often unhinged arguments from people about whether to set up as new or set up and restore from a backup. General tech consensus is that apps are so strongly locked in their own "containers" or whatever that it makes little difference. I've not done a setup-as-new since installing and then trashing a jailbreak back when I had my first iPhone, the 3GS. Damn, I miss that phone. It felt so nice in my hand. Well, ok, apart from that I don't miss it.
Not sure if anyone’s said this already (I haven’t read forward) but you might want to try the LastPass Authenticator app instead of Google Authenticator.

It’s completely compatible. You can use it anywhere you can use Google Authenticator. The best part is, the config is synced across devices (or can be backed up and restored) using the cloud.

Very useful.

It seems to vary app to app how they behave after being restored.
Some apps carry on as if nothing has happened, others (barclays iirc) asks to reconfirm your registration (Via text or something), and some apps act like it's their first ever run.
Think iTunes backup will work best as I dont fancy buying the lightning too usb adapter just to do the wired migration and GovWiFi probably isn't up to wireless migration.

Doesn't it require Lastpass premium which is paid-for?

And how do you 2FA Lastpass itself? Is the authenticator a separate app or accessible without logging in to Lastpass? I don't want to leave my primary password manager without 2FA protection

Seems the 256GB Max in Midnight Green is a popular option - it's the only max variant not available for Saturday delivery with Amazon - https://amzn.to/2LV8BC6

I've gone for 64GB- but feeling same potential use limitations as when the 16GB base model was still around...

As far as I’m aware it doesn’t require premium. It works for me and I certainly don’t pay for it.

The Authenticator is indeed a separate app. I believe it uses your LastPass account to back up its data but would also work standalone.

Here’s a good lowdown: https://blog.lastpass.com/2017/05/a...asier-multifactor-security-for-everyone.html/

Brilliant.

I saw the bit on the apple support: "If you have an Apple Watch and you're setting up a new iPhone, you'll also be asked if you'd like to transfer your Apple Watch data and settings."

But I think my problem is EE... I don't think there is any way of re-pairing a celular apple watch (or pairing an upgrade on the same plan) without having to call them. I LOVE my iPhone but HATE phonecalls - incoming and outgoing minutes used yearly is typically less than 10 :p, although I had to spend about 45 minutes with EE last year trying to move my plan from a Series 3 to Series 4 after upgrading to a Xs Max o_O

No need. I'm on EE too: just follow the sequence suggested above and select "keep plan" when you unpair the watch and it asks you if you want to keep the plan or not, then pair the watch to the new phone and restore from the watch backup that will have been transferred to the new phone from the iCloud/iTunes backup. The cellular part should just keep working.

It appears that my in store reservations for Friday have been charged to my card in full despite my understanding that i was reserving to pay via IUP. On chat now..............

If you provided card details when you ordered then it wasn't for iUP as it doesn't ask for card details at any stage.

I’ve got a reservation booking on Friday to join the Upgrade Program, would I be able to change my time slot at all? Or as they’re now not taking any more reservations would I just lose my current slot?

You can call the store and ask someone and get their name incase someone says differently on the day.

Are you upgrading again from Series 4 cellular to Series 5 cellular?

If you're keeping your Series 4 cellular and just upgrading the phone, you'll be fine. You get a couple of options when unpairing the watch - you just need to select "Keep Data Plan", and it'll remember the plan when you pair with your new phone.

The problem, as you say, is when you're upgrading from one cellular Apple Watch to another, whether via warranty exchange or upgrade from one Series to another and require EE's intervention.

So Apple Chat person is suggesting that they check there are funds available by doing a pre authorisation even though it is a reservation for IUP. Then they will deduct the money once it is available for pick up...............

I dont recall this before when reserving for IUP!

My wife and I have the OG versions from when it was a one-off App Store purchase.

Worth moving to a subscription do you think?
