so when I set up my burner Xr last week, I used the migration tool.. that did the initial set up with the old phone next to the new... that did the wifi passwords etc.. at that point it asked if I wanted to restore from iCloud back up which I did.

I sync my gmail with the mail app, and I had to put my password back in again (use 2fa and it realised i was on a new device).. similar with twitter too not liking I was on a new device.

yup, that too
Mashable's review is decent.. good detail on the camera https://mashable.com/feature/apple-iphone-11-pro-max-review/?europe=true

Without me trawling back through all the pages, could anyone recommend a case for me?

I’m looking for a transparent case that adds as little bulk as possible, and I don’t really like the soft ones, I like a solid case.

Here we go :)

Welp, having watched all the videos of the recent unboxings, I can safely say that it has confirmed that whilst I like the green a lot, I prefer the silver 11 Pro.

I've kept my SKY order for my green (due to come on Friday) but I've just ordered the same phone in silver from Virgin.
Virgin's monthly price is exactly the same (it's interest free for the actual device) but you can't buy it 'sim free' like you can with SKY so it comes with a sim which is £6 a month.

However, the data sim is on a 30 day rolling contract, so can be cancelled day one. I'll be billed £6 for a month, but the fact that Virgin are throwing in new Wireless Case Gen2 AirPods for an extra £1 a month is almost too sweet to pass up.

I've just checked and CEX will take my series 1 AirPods for £78, so that's a win too.

Delivery is 21st Sept from Virgin which actually works better for me as I have an appointment midday on Friday (which will likely be around 3 hours all in) and I'm out for breakfast for my sisters birthday in the morning, so would have been a bit touch and go with my SKY order.
Just waiting on confirmation from Virgin and once locked in I'll call SKY and cancel.

Are you sure you can cancel the contract bit without them making you pay for the handset in full as there is no airtime contract attached to it anymore?

Also, are Virgin phones locked to Virgin or are they sim free?

Finally, I think my maths might be wrong but £45 a month for the Max Pro 256gb on 36 months is £1,620 with is £321 more than the phone actually costs.

With AirPods, the package is £46 a month for 36 months so difference is £198 (after taking off the £159 for AirPods) so better value but still more than the handset costs.

Thanks

This thread is so quiet this year!!!!

proof of how easy the pre order process was I guess.. normally there’s people raging about mess ups and lots of deal talk.

Previously a couple of hours away would result in 4+ pages of posts to read through!

As a Vodafone customer for 20+ years' I am confident that there is plenty of time between now and Friday for it all to go pear shaped.

*remembers last year's S4 watch debacle wistfully*

I recall that. If i remember correctly, vodafone didn't even know what models they actually had LOL.

On the topic of set up as new or transfer data, is there any advantage to set up as new other than pruning of unused apps etc?

I have my phone in good order in terms of being tidy/trimmed of unnecessary apps/pics etc, but just wondering if there’s some ‘unseen’ advantage to setting up as new i.e. not pulling through old temp files or whatever?

Quite a few posts on backups and restores.

I have tons of email accounts and apps requiring passwords. Is a restore from encrypted backup via iTunes my only option?

I don’t get how people do fresh installs each year.

EE order cancellation and re-order

I placed an order for an iPhone 11 Pro 256GB Gold with EE on pre order day 13th September, passed the credit check and all was going well for delivery on 20th.

Then I realised there was a problem applying the myunidays code (20% discount on the contract) and called them up to see if they could apply it retrospectively.

They were very helpful over the phone but said they’d have to cancel the order and re order it. I was a bit worried about being re credit checked but there was no mention of this (they cancelled the order and placed new order immediately, so I don’t think they did a second credit check).

The other concern was about delivery dates. They said the model I’m after was available for launch day delivery.

I went ahead with the order, and they confirmed that it had gone through, the Unidays discount was applied, and that it would be delivered to store on Friday. They said the upfront payment was added to the first bill and the upfront payment from the first order would be credited to that bill, so I didn’t have to pay anything else upfront.

I got a text immediately after placing the order to confirm it but the tracking doesn’t appear to work. I was also concerned about the lack of a confirmation email. The advisor confirmed it had definitely all gone through though, and pinged me her work email address should there be any issues. I did email them back and was given some sort of order number, but it doesn’t work on the order tracker.

I know it’s silly but I still have an element of fear this will backfire but everything does seem to be in order. I was very worried about the credit check to get on EE but they didn’t even mention that at all, which makes me think it’s a non-issue. They also said as regards the confirmation email that if it’s gone via SMS they don’t always email as well.

Ultimately this is a huge discount across the 24 month contract and was the right thing to do, although if it somehow backfires I will be devastated. Anyone else only had SMS confirmation not email? Obviously this was all done over the phone and immediately, so perhaps the system is different.

Don’t worry, the majority of us never received an email and only a few of us received a text (I received a text). You should get a text from DPD on Thursday if it’s being delivered ok the 20th.

I’ve also ordered using a discount code but I had to call as doing the upgrade online via the MyEE app it kept failing making the payment. The person applied the discount and confirmed Friday delivery but said the discount wouldn’t show on the confirmation email but it’s definitely on the account

Email did show this and have the order number but I’ve not received a text. The tracker says expected delivery on Friday so fingers crossed I get my DPD alert tomorrow
[doublepost=1568782746][/doublepost]But miffed I had to pay £6.95 for delivery though as their system wouldn’t let me complete the transaction online ;)

Definitely use keychain as it’s across all devices that you’ve logged into iCloud

Does the migration process also move Apple Watch over to the new device or is that still a manual unpair and re-pair?

I just set up a temporarily XR. Restored from backup but using my iPad nearby to help share WiFi setting etc (pointing out in case it affects the restore)

I’m kinda surprised so far - Apple Pay needs to be set up again, so does my gmail password. But Facebook and eg macrumors I was already signed in - so some settings even safari session/cookies seem to come across

Google Authenticator loses all your two factor things though so make sure you have backup codes and you’ll need to set that up again manually

Myself with my burner XR and my friend who I sold my XS Max to also suffered from this with the migration tool. It was a little random as to what carried across and what didn't, but results were generally favourable. I suppose the reverification of Apple Pay cards is a necessary evil to tackle fraud; imagine the heat if they didn't!

I really want to do a clean install and only carry the data across, and then re-establish all of my settings, folders etc manually. But time is precious, so I may just fall back on the tried and trusted encrypted iTunes backup.

Ordered up and received my spigen clear case. Been using one on my XS max for a year, numerous drops no damage.

Encrypted iTunes backup. That’s what I do, only way all of my data comes over as it was.

When I used to sell the phone straight on to somewhere like CEX immediately afterwards, an iTunes encrypted backup paired with iTunes' former ability to download and reload apps locally was a godsend.

Now, the slowest part is the wait to redownload apps, especially over a choked WiFi connection.

My order is still “processing (not shipped)” on my Stormfront order. No money’s been taken yet from my bank account :(

This is why I chose store pick up when I pre ordered. I live 5min from a CFW store and work form home on Fridays.

I rather walk in at 09:00am knowing that there are plenty of handsets to pick up rather than worrying about a cancellation or delayed delivery.

Lastly my kids will be home from nursery late in the afternoon so I would prefer to set the phone up in the morning rather than getting a delivery late in the afternoon. :D
