I have been with Apple from the start, I have most of their products mainly because of the quality, engineering and design BUT recently they have gone haywire with daft ideas, where is the wireless charging pad I was waiting for, why are they so late at embracing some technology, because they want to trap you in their eco system and I am that trapped person. My kids choose my phone, after a year it goes down through the family, big kid to little kid to grandma to grandpa so 5 people benefit, I live with my iPad, I bought the new 12.9” Pro with magic keyboard, it’s fantastic, I rarely look at my phone it’s only there for when I’m out and about, it’s the kids that use them, I rarely use my Apple Watch but it does store useful data, as for iMacs, MacBooks and iPads we all have one of each, have maybe 30, we don’t sell stuff so it builds up as we update, time for a clear out I think 👍
I have been around longer enough to remember the good old days before all the marketing rubbish, I get what suits my needs and I don’t care if it has an Apple on it or not, but as I said some Apple stuff is great and the integration between devices is brilliant, it’s just a shame there is some much better technology and gadgetry out there now that Apple make difficult to connect with.
Let's not kid ourselves it's all about enticing you into their ecosystem this is the way all big tech companies work, Amazon & Google are no different from Apple, in fact in a lot of ways they took their lead from Apple.
I changed to Apple when the first iPhone came out that was the first Apple device I'd ever owned, it was limited in functionality compared to the 3G but the leap in tech and the attention to detail was amazing, Apple knew exactly what they were doing, the first iPod & iPhone were gateway devices for many out there in a PC dominated era. The first iPhone more than anything else it could be argued boosted consumer visibility of Apple into the stratosphere and for good reason their core products are the best out there, I remember how impressed I was with the build quality and operating system on my first MacBook Pro and to be fair to them I've never seen that quality drop on any of my devices having had many iterations of their devices.
Some would argue but what about Samsung and co they have all the latest cutting edge features why doesn't Apple innovate as much as them. I'd argue why would they! most of those "Innovations" are rushed and half baked at best, Apple plays the long game they sit back and watch what works then try to perfect the concepts that survive.
Would I say I'm imbeded in the ecosystem? sure but I can't see a downside, I know that doesn't work for everyone but to be honest it's not like you buy your first Apple product and get press-ganged to go all in, all tech companies do the same thing I've just found Apples model to be better than any other company out there due to their emphasis on privacy and the fact that unlike Amazon & google I'm not getting data mined the hell out of.
When it comes to the HomePod Mini is it as cheap for a somewhat similar set of features as Echo Dot's no but then the reason Amazon gets to sell you all that gadgety goodness for much less is not altruism, they're making the difference up through what they can market to you and what data they can gather on you and sell from that device. Is the HomePod Mini as good as the Sonos One, no but it's half the size and half the price. And given most peoples complaints that Apple overprice all their products, Apple selling HomePodMini's for £99 is frankly bargain basement prices for them.
Now Accessories well I can see it from both sides, It's all about notional value, Apple can and do charge £59 bucks for the leather case, is it worth it? again this is notional value, if I'm willing to buy their top end phone why would I blink at a £59 case, is the case the best on the market probably not but it's one you can be sure as hell will fly out the door otherwise they'd have to rethink their pricing point. For what they are I've had them since the iPhone 6 and never had an issue, it'll be getting replaced with the next iPhone so longevity to me isn't an issue I just like that it's designed to work perfectly with the £1,000+ phone I've just bought.
With the wallet is it necessary? no, is it practical? depends on your viewpoint, Do you have to buy one? no. But bear in mind regardless of the reviews just try and find one for sale that delivers tomorrow outside of marked up e-bay sales, I'll wait.
Apples a company after all not a charity and they have a duty to their shareholders to increase profit year on year, people see Apple for some reason as the big bad for this like it's a bad thing, if anyone here can tell me they'd run it differently well done! you get a gold star for altruism and relegation to obscurity because that's the way business works, you can't spend billions on R&D if there's no cheddar in the bank to fund it.
As to the good old days, lets not kid ourselves Apple has always been a PR/marketing machine it was Steve Jobs signature move from the start, that's where his genius lay, from the reality distortion field to the 1984 Mac add, to "your holding it wrong" anybody thinking it was any different has got rose tinted glasses on!
Now does that mean they're not a good company? hell no, they're the best one out there. Their customer service is second to none, I've been gobsmacked with the way they've just dealt with issues I've had from replacing a motherboard on an 19 month old MacBook Pro for free totally outside of warranty when it should have been £700 because "that shouldn't have failed this soon" to the time they swallowed the £150 upfront cost of my new iPhone 7 because O2's systems were playing up on launch day, Just try and get any other company to do that without arguing with them.
For those and may other reasons they have my loyalty.
