How do you know they had the stock? Also, these retailers have no idea about how much stock they will have until a day or two before official start. They just put up pre order pages to lure people in and then delay everyone's orders, happens every year.

Looks like you can preorder on Argos for release day stock still even though i get 10% off them I’m not going to as I’ve heard bad reviews about people’s experiences the only time I might is if apples stock slips weeks initially

• They probably never had any stock to begin with
• Pre orders will most likely become fully active after 8am
• I would avoid third party retailers as they usually have no idea how much stock they will receive from Apple. They just take as many pre-orders as possible and then delay everyones order because they don't get enough stock
