Does anyone know what happens if I miss my pick up appointment at the Apple Store for the Upgrade Programme? Will it just be cancelled or can the phone still be picked up later?

...yea, me too!!!

I guess there is no issue if you miss your time slot and turn up a bit later then, as long as you collect at some point during the day? Anyone had experience of doing this?

I wouldn't risk that as your reservation may get cancelled!

Should I be worried I've not had one of these come through?

I pre-ordered for store collection with the intention of going on to iPhone Payments, though it transpires I've actually ordered/paid in full so will have to switch over in the morning.

I decided to "WFH" tomorrow. I know if I take the day off it'll arrive at 16:59 and I'll have spent the day just watching Frasier and This morning.

Does it tend to flake a lot?

Lots of photos on Google of flaked/chipped examples. A couple of threads on this forum, too.

I had a slate black iPhone 5 several years ago which was chipped right out of the box from new. I had to go through 8x boxed units at the Apple store before they could find me one that wasn't chipped! Ever since then, I've avoided the painted/non-anodised colours like the plague.

Ah. That sucks. I do always case mine (apple silicone) and keep it in a pouch in my handbag. Hopefully it’ll be alright. *fingers crossed*. I remember this on my slate 5 too just hoped Apple had sorted it. Coming from an iPhone 7 to an XS. Thanks for the info.

The consensus seems to be that it's like the black steel Apple Watch: the coating is tougher than the bare steel so it is harder to scratch it, but if you do then you can't polish it out like you can with the bare steel. As noted above there are plenty of photos of scratched/chipped space grey X around, but there are also plenty of photos of pristine ones (even some that have been used careless for the year). Mine has been in a case (but taken in and out daily) and doesn't have a single mark on the band after a year. I'd say if you are going caseless you should be fine for everyday use but if you drop it on something hard (like concrete) expect a few marks.

p.s. the issue with the 5 was the anodising, totally different coating process to they use on the X.

Mines an IUP upgrade so you wouldn't see this

It should be fine if you don't drop it. It won't just start flaking "out of nowhere", the coating needs to be initially damaged for it to begin flaking.
