Just to say i Have a 26inch Samsung + 21' old Belinea Screen, so no major big player in the game...
Here's a log from the crash i get when i connect the 2nd display from the 7300 to the 4890 on the fly (Blue screen/restarts) or buy restart

According to this post, the 4890 uses more power:

At least ATI says the 4890 runs on less power.

radeon-hd-4890,9-3-193431-13.jpg

Djulz: did you try not running the 7300 at the same time? Only 4890 with both displays attached?

All tests which have been cited here show higher power consumption by the 4890 compared to the 4870 which is only logical given the higher frequencies and voltages required.

Same result, the 7300 in or outside Macpro!
Im confident we will find a fix until you get ur machine back or netkast updates something... Until then i will run with two cards... One for each monitor!

deinstall

Cindori, do u have any clue to uninstall all the packages?
I could trace the ATIRadeonX2000GA ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver ATIRadeonX2000VADriver 18-14-37 & ATIRadeonX2000 18-13-55 drivers but i cant get a hold on the rest.... not sure
The installers dont offer the option to uninstall
<That was Lame!!!> I got it now

News

Tonight i ran a fresh copy of 10.5.7, and plugged the 4890 with one display, got a blank screen. Added the Netkast files 'ATI init pkg link' restarted and got good screen, then for some reason just the background image on the display, no hand on the menu, as if some other display was plugged somewhere, and being main display. OK. So launched the control panel by looking into the system, display control panel, checked for display, the display was recognized, i finally could see my whole desktop on one screen.
From there launched a vlc + movie, and then BAM! Black screen.
Rebooted
I had to go through the display control panel and the checking for main display one more time
Installed the Exotic card installer....
rebuilt permissions, checked vlc, as soon as launched a movie and resized it, BAM, another black screen.
Rebooted
Went through the display ctrl pnl, check etc.
Installed the last package via kexthelper, did finish the process, launched VLC, this time the resizing did not crash everything, but 2mins later, black screen. I dont have a sleep or screesaver enabled...
I even attached a DVI to VGA adapter to the end of one of the cards DVI.
Nope, dont work. Am I missing something?

how did you uninstall everything?

how did you uninstall everything?
Go to system=library=extension for netkas + ATY
make a research via filebuddy for the rest(or ...spotlight), also possible via terminal

My Mac Pro should come back this week. They are replacing the logic board ( :( ) then I can see if I overlooked something

Djulz: What model number is your card? Does the girl have guns on the cooler?

On the '06/07 model, 400$.

I really hope they can send back the old board though. The Apple Techs here in Norrbotten of Sweden are clueless about Mac Pro's. I am sure they overlooked something, like the diagnostic LEDs or the onboard battery.

Rev

Wish u good luck for the board!
On my card, just by the DVI's on the bottom its engraved Rev F, I guess its the version, and yes the girl has guns and its absolutely looks like yours!!
By the PCI connector there's the number:
P/N7120379000G 909d0

i will be getting my 4870 for my 2006 mac pro tomorrow, so if nobody posts their benchmark by then, i'll do it.

edit: what is the multisample mean? I upgraded my cpu from 4 core to 8 core. Is that what the number is referring to?

Let us know how it goes etc

Thanks and goodluck

No, it is anti aliasing, a way to improve graphics

I want someone with the same settings (BUT 4X) to post their scores, because I have extracted my 4890 benchmark from my hard drive (which I kept) and I did it with 4x, not 8x. I want the results to be as comparable as possible. If you upgraded your Mac to quad core, I can not use your bench to compare 100% fair. Feel free to post it anyway though. But I need a dual core bench before I'll toss up my 4890 scores.

dual or quad - doesnt matter, opengl rendering context can use only one thread anyway

megahertzes matter, but we are setting heavy graphics mode to make gpu bottleneck, not cpu, so megahertzes doesnt matter in this case.

I don't get it, you're not going to post your scores until somebody else does? Usually the "Show me yours and I'll show you mine" approach only works in New Orleans, Daytona Beach, and Sturgis.... I guess macrumors.com can be added to that list. lol

Here's a 2600 HD 256mb, looks like it's better than the 7300gt, not by much.

I would REALLY like to know what's going on with the 4890, if those who have bought it, have got it working with dual DVI or what, I need to know if it's going to work, because I plan on buying one soon.

ok - here is the 4890 score I got

Bear in mind though this is stock clock @ 850MHz, but when I get my computer back, I am going to clock to 1000MHz. We'll see how it scores then : )

X1900XT just for comparison
