Every time I go to my Apple Store the Mac counter is mobbed and I see people leaving with iMac boxes in both hands. Everyone is switching to Macs.

Aople's quarterly report with respect to Mac sales should be very interesting.

I think even you would be shocked if Macs ever reached a majority marketshare.

The bottom of the Retail pyramid is very broad. Overcoming the massive flood of cheap hardware running Windows would be unlikely.

The upside is that many people use a computer for email and light surfing, i.e., Facebook. Its hard in their mind to justify spending 1200 dollars for an iMac when they can fill that need for a few hundred.

Oh really now. Just because the thin-and-light segment didn't exist in any large percentage (and still arguably doesn't, dispite Intel's best efforts) doesn't mean it's a MBA copy.

Heck, back when most laptops were almost 2" thick, I had a laptop that was about 1/2 that. This was back in 2003/4. Does that make it an ultrabook?

However, the new Intel push does look remarkably like the MBA.

I'm not going to comment on the obvious trollbait in this thread, but I love the Ultrabook push. It's a great initiative that is pushing manufacturers to produce stunning products combined with great hardware for a competitive price. What's not to like?

MBA was not the first ultra-portable or Ultrabook, just the most successful one to date. This endless stream of Ultrabook launches in 2012 will just force Apple to step up their game to remain a market leader. Everyone (consumers) win.

Yeah why buy a $1200 iMac or Macbook when a $500 iPad will do the trick? The point is either way Apple hoovers up the profits.

I find it strange how some spend so much just to use Facebook.

Except when someone can not afford even an iPad...

You can always buy a pre-owned iPad on eBay for $70 or a refurbished one from Apple for $399:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC349LL/A.

Now if a person can't afford even $399 and you say they will buy a $200 netbook then there are no profits there. Asus can sell all those crappy netbooks for a loss and Apple will continue to hoover up the profits at record rates.

I will be happy enough to port them over to Ubuntu or Mint.

Corporo-sycophancy is tiresome.

I disagree with the idea of Verticle integration because it is really just a fancy word for incompatibility with open standards and vendor lock in. Apple isn't the only industry leading company using verticle integration both Sony and HTC come to mind with various kinds of verticle in. The original macbook air was an expensive niche product so very few companies wanted to compete with it and that is understandable.

Show me a PC manufacturer who is making money hand over fist and then we can talk. IBM got out of the PC business for a reason-they saw that PCs are becoming a commodity business and innovation on PCs would sap resources from IBM's other product lines which were far more profitable. Dell got out of the PC business for the same reason.

A £500 iPad? Try a £300 laptop which comes with a keyboard for bits of work that need doing and software that they are probably already familiar with and is compatible with the rest of the Windows using world. More result and more £ to spend on something else.

Apple is not hoovering up the entire industries profits. Apple is niggling its way into marketshare slowly, their products bought by people who are rich enough to get them, or appreciate their build quality or software (or both).

The exceptions with this is the iPod and the iPhone, where Apple do have a majority in the marketshare.

I don't understand people who kid themselves Apple is top dog in the entire technology industry. They might be in terms of your preferability with products, but Apple do not rule the world just yet. They have influential designs and are doing well with the iOS business, but there are still a lot of people in the world who have yet to own an Apple product.

There I said it. the term "ultrabook" is a weasel term invented by Intel to distract people from "Macbook Air clone". Anyone who can rub 2 brain cells together saw that the first "ultrabook" Asus UX21/UX31 were Macbook Air knock-offs and the same for the Lenonvo/Toshiba clones. I'm shocked Apple hasn't filed suit and petitioned for an injunction. Sure "ultrabooks" aren't selling at all, and perhaps Tim Cook is more pragmatic about it but Steve Jobs would have taken offense and sued out of principle. "Stop stealing our stuff" was Steve's rallying cry.

Technically, all thin & light notebooks are a VAIO X505 clones, but carry on believing what you want.

This is really odd.

I'm not sure i can understand most of the responses to the OP!?

How can anyone sit there not be aggrieved by the design choice by Asus? I'd say this is even worse than Sumsungs attempt at the iPad.

Which Apple can actually do successfully, unlike the competition.

They're called "margins."
True. However the price is a big hold back for a lot of average consumers. If Apple really wanted to swamp the tech market, they would have to cheapen their products or at least offer a cheaper £300 model. But at the risk of diluting their brand known for a high quality product.

This is really odd.

I gotta admit, that is a blatant rip off. However, the only one I've seen so far that is.

It's just a computer, how can anyone be aggrieved or bothered?

If anyone does get upset over a design of hardware then they should seek professional help.

What did you expect people to be buying in an Apple Store? People are not going to flock to an Apple Store to buy a Windows based machine are they!

That has nothing to do with the initial sentiment of your thread which was to state that they're all clones.

This is really odd.

Owning an Apple product is not a free pass to act like Steve Jobs .

What is it to you if they don't ? Why even be bothered about this ?

What is it to me? nothing really just thought i'd engage in the thread. Sorry about that.

Why even be bothered? I admire Apples design and how much effort goes into every part of it. I feel bad for them when "X" comes in and takes the exact design and sticks their logo on it.

Pretty poor don't you think.

Also if you're not bothered, why are you even in this thread telling people why they shouldn't be bothered?

Weird eh!

Let me get this straight, you feel bad for a corporation that presently has a positive cash flow in the billions and tons of cash in the bank ?

Hum... why exactly ? I feel nothing towards these rich corporations. I owe them nothing.
