ok...... um... thanks?

Just thought it would be nice to innovate and create your own style, not mimic someone elses.

There's only so many ways you can create a thin & light machine. Obviously many have taken their design cues from Apple, but who cares? It doesn't devalue our MacBook's in anyway.

Let me get this straight, you feel bad for a corporation that presently has a positive cash flow in the billions and tons of cash in the bank ?

Hum... why exactly ? I feel nothing towards these rich corporations. I owe them nothing.

So because they have lots of money people should be allowed to copy their designs?

True but it would be nice for others to have their own take on it. Not just a replica.

Apple took their cues from Sony & the VAIO line. Everyone steals from everyone else. It just doesn't really matter.

I'm a long-time VAIO user, I quite like the fact that Apple borrowed ideas from Sony and vice-versa. It means us, the consumer, gets a better product.

Do you have a Sony laptop you can show me that looks exactly like Air prior to its release?

Not what I'm saying, what I'm saying is : I don't care about it and neither should you.

You do realise he did, last page. There's a picture of a X505 there. Wedge design, ultrathin laptop, 2004.

I think he asked for MBA lookalikes, not fugliness from years ago.

Well then someone would also have to point me to the point of this thread? I ask because none of the laptops posted look exactly like a Macbook air.

That, again, looks nothing like the MBA.

I don't think you understand the point i'm making?

----------

Eye of the beholder then, those laptops obviously are a source of inspiration for the MBA.

Thats great! maybe they are a source of inspiration but Apple have taken that design and tweaked it to may the MBA. They didn't keep it the same and stick their logo on it?

HP, Asus, Toshiba and whoever may of took design cues from the Sony X505, Macbook Air, Samsung q30 etc... so what is your point?

Nope, I really don't get your point. To me it looks like the MBA. To you it doesn't. Is there really a point to this sub-thread ? No, because frankly it's all irrelevant to my life and should be to yours as well.

And again, so what ? Not our problem. Asus took Apple's design and tweaked, Apple took Sony's design and tweaked it.

You know what ? My lunch is going to taste the same either way.

I think i'll leave it there because you either don't understand design or you're being stubborn and sticking to your point regardless.

I get that from my wife, don't need it anywhere else! :D

The ASUS you posted isn't a complete clone, either. The hinge area is angular in MBA, whereas it's rounded in the ASUS. The top also appears to be made out of different material, while MBA is pure aluminum. That's all that can be seen from the pic you posted. Honestly, the only things that are in common is the aluminum body. Wedge design and extreme thinness existed before MBA, so you can't say ASUS copied them from Apple - Apple already "stole" them from someone else.

Seriously, it doesn't matter who copies who as everyone does it. If it leads to better products, I'm happy, that's all I care about.

thread\ (is that right?)

They can't make a complete clone as it wouldn't be allowed but they have pushed the boundaries right to the wire without infringing.

yes the wedge design did exist as did thin laptops but not the way apple have interpreted it.

thread/

Seriously this is getting boring now.

It was boring 5 pages ago.

Really why people care about these "issues" is quite beyond me. I guess some people need added drama and stress in their lives.

It's part of the ebb and flow of conversation.

Industry observers have noticed these "issues" as well. CES was more or less a showcase of Apple's R&D. This is one of the salient features of industry discussion at the moment.

For instance, Stephen Hackett for 512 Pixels in response to Mat Honan: http://gizmodo.com/5875243/ (he's not alone):

http://512pixels.net/i-just-dont-get-ces/

I Just Don’t Get CES

People who have worked with — and for — me know this about me:

Half-baked work sold as a complete and acceptable solution will get under my skin every time.

If the person cannot grasp that their work could even be potentially shoddy, and I’m prone to having an aneurism.

I have found over the years that this character trait shows up in all sorts of weird situations. One of the most disconnected one might be tech products and announcements.

That’s why I get angry every year when CES rolls around.

Every January, tech companies use the event to showcase their newest products. Over the years, these companies have pushed out hundreds of netbooks, TVs, e-readers, cameras and Android tablets into the world.

And most of them really, really suck.

Companies like Palm and Microsoft have used the show to off their plans and products. The original Pre was announced there in 2009, while the boys and girls from Redmond have talked about Windows Slates for what seems like an eternity.

It seems that things announced at CES are cursed. Maybe it’s because the event takes place in January, and these companies don’t have much to show off right after the holidays that’s any good.

While I’m sure that has a lot to do with it, I think that most of these companies simply don’t have any decent products to announce. Without a doubt, this year’s CES coverage will be full of semi-decent ultrabooks, cheap tablets, some crazy new television technology no one will actually want (or be able) to use and about a million new iPhone accessories.

None of these products will change the world. None of them will create blocks-long lines at their launch. It is hard to get people excited for cheap, shoddy devices that more and more look like knock-offs of Cupertino’s work.

In short, CES doesn’t have the magic a show of its size should have. I just don’t understand why people — mainly, the tech press — keep pretending it does.

Disbelief on how you have come to that totally bizarre and inane conclusion doesn't even describe what I felt when I read that post. I mean, seriously? Do you genuinely believe that?

When 90% of PC industry profits are being hoovered up by Apple, that's a sick and dying industry.

So would you say the smartphone industry is dying too? No one can beat Apple's product margins, but does it matter when they trump Apple in market share?

Something is definitely wrong in the smartphone segment as well. When one OEM is squeezing out almost all others, and sales are split between numerous OEMs who have serious trouble with differentiation. Android isn't profitable, unless you're Google counting up ad revenue or you're a carrier gouging consumers, or Samsung... who seems to be going in a direction opposite to everyone else.

It's a mess.
