I’m running my studio on a Mac Pro Trash Can still.... I picked up a MacBook Air M 1 and I’m excited to see its performance on Logic. Problem is my audio interface (Apollo’s ) aren’t supported on Big Sur just yet, let alone Apple Silicon. *Spitfire Audio is Awesomeeeee* :)
That completely slipped my mind for some reason lol, I forgot that I record vocals and that's hardware ? I have an Audio Technica AT4050 & my interface is the Apogee Duet 2. Was panicked for a second that I hadn't checked the compatibility but to my surprise Apogee Duet 2 is already supported by BOTH Big Sur & Apple Silicon!

Wow! Apogee is on the ball. I hope I dont have to purchase something else; have a couple of interfaces but neither have announced support for Big Sur or M1.

I added these to the first post. It's a Wiki post, so anyone can edit it, as a heads-up.

I could find no evidence that Celestia (not sure which one you meant, only found an old project on Sourceforge) or Wipr are actually universal binaries at this time.

On a side note: Some apps I've come across mention in release notes that they have "compatibility" or "resolved issues" with Apple Silicon Macs but don't claim to be actual universal binaries. I'm skipping those for now since they'd require testing to see if they contain actual ARM code or not.
Celestia: AppStore

I did not use release notes etc. but Mints which checks apps for universal binaries.

Current release version of Chrome doesn’t work in Rosetta. There is a beta being worked on though.

There was a YouTube video linked in another thread showing Chrome running on an M1 MBA, albeit slower than Safari for now since it's obviously not optimised. I assume running through Rosetta 2.

virtualizing ≠ emulating

Windows x86/x64 will not run in VMware Fusion for Apple Silicon.
Just curious then, other than running ARM Linux what use would Fusion or Parallels be? Windows ARM which has no software?

I think they will target x64 using a similar method to QEMU

Yes, pretty much, Linux ARM is what we get for now with Windows ARM in the line.

These type of workloads are moving to the Neural Engine / GPU and away from the CPU as they can be highly parallelised. They are likely to work very well on M1, even under Rosetta if they are using Metal. Anyway, this is of course my expectation .. I guess we will see later this week as everyone starts to post their first reactions.
I'm not talking performance here; I'm talking about the software just working at all; about plugins; about drivers. None of those things are expected to work right now; I mean usually it takes a few months just to have a version compatible with an OS update; and most of them won't be compatible with big sur even. For musicians there's basically just logic. a lot of companies haven't said anything yet about AS support. As for Steinberg
Here is a statement from Steinberg about their products:

Not only did Apple introduce a new operating system but also a new hardware platform with the Apple Silicon system on a chip (SoC) solution. While many of our products are compatible with macOS Big Sur on Intel-based systems, please note that we cannot recommend using Apple Silicon-based systems for the time being until we have completed our tests or released updates to make our software and hardware compatible.

Please keep in mind that other software you intend to use (e.g., plug-ins) needs to be officially compatible with macOS Big Sur as well!

from today's Firefox 83 release notes:

  • For the recently released Apple devices built with Apple Silicon CPUs, you can use Firefox 83 and future releases without any change. This release (83) will support emulation under Apple’s Rosetta 2 that ships with macOS Big Sur.
  • We are working toward Firefox being natively-compiled for these CPUs in a future release.

I suspect that the reason we don’t have a release of Parallels today is this. They understand that the biggest reason that users want their software is to run Windows.
So they continue to work towards that objective.

Wiki to document universal and native Apple silicon apps as they are released. Another known tracking site for app compatibility is RoaringApps, but at the time of writing this, the listings are very limited.

Regarding the performance of Intel based binaries you might want to take a look here. According to first benchmarks the performance impact of Rosetta is surprisingly low - as in Rosetta on the M1 runs almost twice as well as native ARM on Windows SQ2.
