Walterhpdx, sorry it didn't work for you ... it has always worked for me (so far). Did you try the "kill"s on both computers? Did you try both the "pkill" as well as the "killall"?

I tried both pkill and killall. And no, I only tried it on the machine that was acting up, not the "host" that has the keyboard & mouse. After all, the host still saw my work laptop, so I don't think that was it.

Please do try it on the "host" computer too, and, in fact, try it on both machines. It works every time for me, albeit I don't actually use UC all that often, but when I experience a disconnect I can always reconnect UC using the pkill or killall commands.

Even if your host machine "sees" the other laptop, this does not mean that the Universal Control app also sees it.

Once I realized that under Add Display in the Displays options there was two sets of items "Link Keyboard and Mouse" and "Mirror or extend to" I finally was able to share my mouse and keyboard with two machines. The first problem is if the main machine sleeps then it does not share the keyboard and mouse.
For whatever reason, I'm not seeing that option at all -- just the "Mirror or extend to" option that seems to correspond to Sidecar. I'm working with an M1 iMac and an M1 MacBook Air, both running Monterey 12.3. I can get Sidecar working fine, but Universal Control just refuses to activate.

You need to click on the Universal Control button and turn it on on both systems.

i'm having issues screen sharing between an imac (5k 2015) and MacBook (m1 pro). both are updated to latest OS and universal control is working. I can extend the imac screen onto the MacBook, but i can't go the other way around. the imac doesn't show up as a screen to extend to.

is this a limitation or a bug. i didn't expect to be able to extend the older device. that's kinda useless. i want to use the newer device on the older device with a bigger screen. not the old device on a smaller screen.

edit: i see. the iMac doesn't have the option to be an airplay receiver. well this is pretty useless. lol.

This is a thread about universal control, not Airplay. But yeah that iMac is way too old to be a Airplay receiver.

my macs are always side-by-side, so it already seems natural to be able to drag files from one to the other, or click on something on the other screen.

but right now, am working on my macbook across the room, and it feels amazing to be able to reach over to my imac to grab a file...

Hi all,

I'm trying to get UC to work between my MacBook Pro (16" 2019 version) and my iMac (27" 5k Retina, also 2019 version). I'm confused. Is UC suppose to work between an iPad, MacBook and iMac only, or iPad and iMac and/or MacBook only? I was watching a TON of tutorials on how to get UC to work between a MacBook Pro and a iMac, and it did not work for me. A lot of the videos I've seen on YouTube on UC tutorials are always between a MacBook and an iPad, which is leading me to think UC will only work that way. I have all three boxes checked under the UC settings inside the Display settings, and tried to add my MacBook pro in 'add display' but my iMac wants to use my MacBook as a mirrored or extended display for the iMac. So I can't get UC to work at all, after following advice from a couple of posts here. I thought UC would work with any Apple displays (iPad, MacBook pro/air/etc, or iMac) and that it wouldn't matter which one you use or how many you used, but has anybody have this issue with just between the MacBooks and iMac for UC?

i use UC with a 2016 macbook (the 12", which you'll have to pry from my dead hands), and a 2019" imac. i can go back & forth easily, and i can use the imac as a second screen (not vice versa, alas).

make sure bluetooth is on, & both macs are on the same network. try unchecking/rechecking the options in system preferences>displays>universal control. also try rebooting both macs...

Something I learned yesterday that I am not sure has been mentioned. Even with UC turned on in display preferences, on two Macs, it may not really be turned on.

Yesterday I had to reboot both of my MBPs that I have been using UC since the beta release, and after reboot it refused to work. I finally found an article that pointed me to the display settings in the control panel, not in preferences, and that the little round display icon next to the brightness slider must be toggled on aka colored blue. This must be on both machines. After that it has worked perfectly again.

A couple issues I find using Magic Keyboard ipad pro w/ Mac Mini

1. Scrolling on Mac Mini Screen w/ Magic Keyboard trackpad is extremely slow, using Mac Mini trackpad scrolls fine on both screens
2. Couldn’t use the Magic Keyboard to type on Mac Mini screen if I use the Mac Mini trackpad to initiate, Ex: if I click on address bar w/ Mac Mini trackpad, i can’t type from the magic keyboard

Anyone having similar issues?

I use it nearly daily - I usually work on the MBP and have music or whatever on the Macmini and use the MBP to control both. Works pretty seamlessly to be honest - I really like it

I have it set up with my iPad at my work station - typically I just use it for having ebooks/pdfs that I read on downtime - currently I find it to work quite smooth. Scrolling with the magic mouse is good, and it's nice to use the mouse to highlight text.

Only thing I could possibly want is for touch commands on the magic mouse to work while connected to the iPad - I'd like to do tap my fingers for it to bring me back to the homescreen. Only other way to navigate through is to drage the cursor to the bottom to lift the dock - which can be iffy at times.

Other than that, I really enjoy it.
