To be fair I've not noticed this. I'd just like to see more EDGE.

I hate to say this but I think I'd be tempted by a 3G iPhone, even if battery was worse.

Yea, UMTS minimum is the way to go. It was pretty obvious that Apple opted for EDGE due to the US market (Blackberry devices are mostly EDGE). Apparently Tmobile USA was the first 3G operator launched like 2 years ago! And Apple clearly wants to launch the Iphone with the carrier with the largest subscriber base.. greedy Steve Jobs!

Well, assuming if rumours are true that Apple will launch a UMTS Iphone during Spring:

Then I guess it's no harm to those without an o2 contract, i.e. hacked Iphones to move on to the 3G Iphones with ease :)

I used to read the Reg. I don't listen to their nonsense anymore.

EDGE would be ok (it's just a software upgrade to GPRS cells) if O2 pulled their finger out. EDGE is easily fast enough for browsing right now.

When HSDPA has good coverage for O2 then a 3G phone will make sense.

Me too, but I think it would have to be on charge most of the time. It's a battery hog as it is!

Umm.. perhaps a removable battery compartment would have solved it. But dunno how that would have affected the design of the form factor.

What I'd like to see is a major enchantment on the SMS application.

Perhaps the new Iphones will come in the same size of the Ipod touch with 16GB as standard! with UMTS & HSPDA .. nice...

I agree. I'd like to see an improvement in the UI on this as well because I find it really peculiar. There again, I don't text much.

Well, I guess to those legit Iphone users shouldn't have any firmware update issues assuming if Apple does bundle in new enchantments on the existing apps.

We should be allowed to record video and attach them via Mail. Perhaps a MMS application (even tho' I dont use it) just to be 'more complete' in comparison with other phone makers.

Not to mention Flash support on Safari, Change themes.

I miss SMS receipt mostly.. can't see the harm in that being included too.. and an Instant Messenger like cut-down version of iChat for iPhone.

Is UMTS the same as HSDPA? I take it that O2 doesn't have either of these?

UMTS is 3G, HSDPA is 3.5G.

Apparently 3.5G is like near broadband speeds or can potentially go to 7 Mbps!

Most new Nokia & SE phones all come with HSDPA as std.

New Iphones should support it, hopefully :)

3G in this country (UK) is UMTS. HSDPA is the high speed data capability up to a theoretical 14 Mbit/s.

O2's 3G coverage isn't that great but may be better than EDGE coverage even though GPRS coverage is very high. In theory if O2 invested in EDGE more then the iPhone tariff would make sense.

I have HSDPA on my T-Mobile data card which I use for my Sony Vaio SZ2XP notebook when I'm out and about. £10 per month for unlimited data! Very fast too.

You've got a Macbook Pro as well right? Why not use it for that too ?

Mate has a Bnokia n95 with HSDPA and bluetooth-ed it with his macbook. Yea, speeds are impressive on the go, when you have coverage.

You think Apple will launch a new Iphone with 3G come May 2008 ?

I don't really take the MBP out of the house. It's a 17 inch and is a bit of a handful for mobile work. Apart from that, it's my precious baby!

It's been my gut feeling for a while that there will be a 3G iPhone by the Spring of next year. Nothing but intuition though, and I know that it stirs up feelings of resentment from quite a lot of people when such views are expressed. Some people seem to want technology to stagnate once they have bought their hardware, but I say 'bring it on'!

I'll try a Tesco card when I get in from work

Hi, did you get around to trying this?

I am hopefully going to get an iPhone soon, which I would want to use with PAYG, and my current sim is a Tesco one.

Obviously would save messing about with numbers if I could jailbreak and then use the sim I have :)

Cheers
Stu.

Do you mean the UK IPhone?

Almost :D

Sorry to sound like a dunce. but i'm new to all this. Could u explain or point me to a tutorial with regards to what i'd need to unlock my UK Iphone to work with my gsm sim card. Thanks

http://www.bladox.com/ - Buy a blank Turbo Sim from here.

http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17738 Follow this excellent tutorial.

Ok a couple of points:

Be VERY gentle while cutting the sim card.
If you can't restart at at point remember to hold down the on/off and home button together for a force shut down.

Ok, your good to go! :)

God threats like these are so annoying...People are never happy with what they have, enjoy the iphone as it is...once you get the 3g you will all complain because its missing something else...Just save your money because your never gonna be comfortable with what you have. I personally like my iphone as it is and don't want it any other way...maybe in the future I'll update and by a new but its been short since it released i'm enjoying it.

Interesting, thanks for the link.

That's a lot of fannying around though. Only for the nerds amongst us. :)

(ie. all those above who say they're not computer people, I'd try and pay someone to do this.)

Seroiously its very easy.:)
