"Do you mind saying what you use the scale for?"

It's mostly habit. I'm a map nerd. A very good friend flies light planes and I've gotten accustomed to the RIGHT (OPINION) way to display scale, circles on the display. When I look at a map display, one of my first thoughts is "about how far is "somewhere" from "somewhere else". I still remember the North Carolina highway map being 13 miles to the inch.

So, just a (bad?) habit.

Thanks!

Out on vacation and ran into another limitation of Apple Maps.
Staying at Bass Lake at the southern end of Yosemite.
Here is a satellite view in 3D with labels, poi, and traffic for both AM and GM.

You can see AM is missing pretty much everything

Well, as we discussed before, green (no) traffic on Google Maps is “no” traffic on Apple Maps...do, they’re showing the same thing.

And more than half the “points of interest” are private rentals...AirBNB? One of the local recreation areas comes up as well on Apple Maps, but not the campground Google shows.

Apple Maps uses a much different zoom level for POI’s than Google typically.

I do have to say, for an area that doesn’t have new Maps data yet, driving through a city with CarPlay is fun. Very accurate directions, traffic and POI info for my morning in Toronto.

The past week I made a 900 mile round trip from Central Missouri to West Central Tennessee and back using Apple maps the whole time.

Traffic congestion advisories going through metropolitan St. Louis were 100% reliable. Lane choice was again 100% reliable. Speed limit display was 100% accurate on Interstates and secondary highways and streets with the exception of some construction zones. In fact when going from one speed zone to another the display updated within 1 to 2 seconds. Siri always announced the next highway change well in advance and was always correct on the exit number. Maps also displayed the exit number should I have missed Siri's announcement. ETA, miles left, miles traveled were 100% accurate. Apple Maps told me I should be pulling into my drive at 7:31pm and that was right on the button.

Maps was running on my XR with 13.2b1.

Just yesterday, a short yet very congested trip of just 7.5 miles expected to take 26 min and this was spot on. The only wrong advise I got was on the return trip where it asked me to make a U-turn at a crossing that didn't allow it...

I'm loving the new maps, but I'm also finding aspects of it in New York City that give the appearance of it being rushed, or unrefined. Lots of inconsistencies over highway names compared to the old maps. I've sent in soooooo many corrections. The POI corrections used to be very fast, but now they seem to have slowed down significantly. Haven't yet come across any road name or road layout corrections. But I usually attach their own Look Around photos as proof of what I'm trying to change.

I would check again and see if the issues have been corrected because some of the stuff I have reported has been fixed. I just didnt receive notifications for it.

I’m so jealous of not having this detail yet.

This one was interesting...lighter color grass in the Highway median...and then the even lighter strip going across stumped me at first. And then came across it and it was power lines running through.

I’ve been paying attention to this too. My read is: Darkest green = heavily treed area; lighter green = lower level vegetation (shrubbery, brush, grass). The latter would be consistent with a power line easement, which must be kept clear of heavy vegetation, so as to facilitate ready access by the utility.

Yeah...the first thing I thought was , “wow...the color actually matches what I’m seeing!” Hah

The colors look great in light mode when in navigation view, both in CarPlay and on the phone. I wish they showed a bit more contrast in dark mode though. All of that nice color detail, a major defining feature of the new map, is lost in dark mode imo.

I've submitted a few updates since ios13 released and haven't heard back. They did make one quick fix and never replied. I thought they always got back to submitted reports.

I submitted a report because they had a mis-numbered exit on a highway. Never heard back, but when I checked the next day, it was fixed. I was surprised how fast that was!

I submitted one to correct a building showing where there is no building (on a New England town green). Apparently, the satellite/aerial imagery they’re using was taken on a Saturday morning, when there are tents set up for the local farmers’ market, which their systems are interpreting as a permanent structure. This is still not corrected.

Well at least it's right on the weekends? 😬

I noticed that they're apparently not allowing green to show on most cemeteries? Even if they're very leafy and abundant with trees, most are gray, even on the new maps. Which is odd, because on the *old* maps, in areas of New York that had the additional map layers in navigation mode, certain cemeteries were green.

The cemetery about a mile from my house shows as green. Granted, it's not marked as a cemetery either.

Nope...as you’ll see throughout this thread, those that want it most, have to wait....

I’ve had it on my phone since around lunchtime yesterday. Not on my iPad or Mac yet. I’ve sent in a few reports about POI’s in the wrong place, but other than that, my area looks great!

EDIT: I now have it on my Mac as well.

I think this is new. When viewing Apple Maps in a third-party app, such as Instagram, there is now an Maps logo in the bottom left corner of the map! This is on iOS 13.1.2. 6AE8C4C6-3383-4359-87E4-C0B106153165.jpeg
