It's weird...in the new maps, the vast majority of the 3D buildings look sooooooo much more detailed than in the old maps. Yet, I've also encountered some smaller buildings that actually look worse than on the old maps. I wonder how that happens.

The link that's been shared over the last couple of days has some thoughts on that after Northern California launched:

Even in my neighborhood, a few of the apartment buildings appear to be taller than their nearby counterparts, despite them all being the same size. I think this may be partially due to elevation not being factored into the standard map.

I've been reporting TONS of things to Apple over the past week. Only corrections so far have been a few minor POI updates. Let's see how long it takes for road map issues to be corrected.

Obligatory “I was going to White Castle on the new maps” photo.

There was a traffic light icon missing at the end of this exit ramp. Sent it into Apple.

Took a long drive out to Sparta, New Jersey today. Noticed something.

On the phone itself, when you select from various routes, it gives you the ETE as well as the distance of that route.

But on Apple CarPlay, it doesn’t give you the mileage of each route. That’s an odd omission. Unless I missed it, or was looking in the wrong place?

I’m having a lot of phone problems way out here in Nowhere, New Jersey. Even though it’s showing 3 bars and an LTE signal, none of my navigation apps are working. It’s frustrating as hell.

This whole neighborhood around my hotel is giving me trouble. But my relatives aren’t really having problems. Good thing I had my car’s in-dash GPS as a backup.

Reset network settings?

Perhaps google maps with offline maps would be useful if there are data issues.

I use an old Garmin Navi for satnav. I have an old iPad mini 2 with GPS as a backup.

That seems to have done the trick. Is there a technical reason why that helps?

I believe it forces a network update that doesn’t update on its own for some reason.

It’s just on my list of things to do if hard reset doesn’t fix. And it does seem to clear out connection issues and start fresh.

I was reading through the O’Beirne post today about the maps updates. He mentions the average of 76 (I think that’s what it was) days between update rollouts. He originally said that would mean the Midwest would go wide release sometime in December, but he edited that to mention that AFTER the Midwest is done...there is still 66.2% of the US land area left to roll out...and it still sounds like they are expecting to get the whole US done by the end of the year. So he’s saying the Midwest might actually go live for everyone pretty soon!

A user on Reddit made a good observation about the "entrances" feature and edit capabilities we discussed earlier.

While there is a separate option to edit while routing to a POI, that seems to be "address entrance" if that makes sense. It looks as though the updated multiple entrance option has indeed been removed from the main POI edit screen (hopefully temporarily) since it is still listed as an option on the map edit area.

Not sure why, but it will be nice to have all of the entrance edit options back again assuming they decide to do that.

Had a few issues coming home from Jersey today.

For starters, while driving across the George Washington Bridge lower level into Manhattan, Apple Maps incorrectly directed me to use the right two lanes to take Exit 1A onto NY-9A and West 178th Street. But looking at the map itself, I could tell Apple Maps was actually keeping me on I-95.

Exit 1A is a LEFT exit, and is accessible from the left lane and center lane. So while Maps telling me to keep right was correct, it incorrectly showed me the information for Exit 1A. It's all very hard to describe. That whole upper and lower interchange is funky. I took some screen shots from Look Around, and sent it in to Apple.

Also, while driving home, there were two points in my journey where the "traffic lines" were blinking on and off.

I've sent at least two or three dozen corrections into Apple since we got the Northeast update and iOS 13. They have a lot to work on. Too many inconsistencies for my tastes.

Also, I noticed today that the new "day mode" Apple Maps on CarPlay has apparently produced some burn-in on my car's LCD screen. I can see a faint image of the ETA bar on the bottom, as well as the name of the road bubble on the lower right corner. I can't believe this. I've never driven with CarPlay for more than an hour and a half or so. At any other time, the screen is always showing different things, so I have no idea why or how the image could be burned in like that. But it's still upsetting.

The burn-in has disappeared. Not sure what that was all about.

But now that I'm back home in New York City, my GPS is acting wonky. Bouncing all over the place, like it doesn't know where I am...even when I'm home on my wi-fi! Is this because I reset the network settings out in the boondocks? Do I need to do it again when I'm back in the big city?

Also, I got an e-mail from Apple Maps Support earlier today. Apparently in reference to a brief glitch I encountered shortly after the original update to iOS 13. It was a mainly canned response to what they (or their algorithms) believed my problem to be.

But maybe I should respond and detail my other most pressing issues with them. Maybe it'll reach a human faster....

...until I remembered that I’m working in Boston today. Hah...first time in the new maps area since wide release.

As a long-time user of both paper and computer maps, one thing I use frequently for general awareness is the map scale (miles or km per some distance) shown (usually near the lower right-hand corner) on my Google maps (computer and iOS) and Garmin GPS. How do I turn on the scale display with Apple maps in iOS 13?

It shows up in the corner when you adjust the map size. It goes away automatically as it is just for scale reference while adjusting.

Yours work differently than mine ... no scale at any time with Apple maps. Your description matches Google maps, and they have an option in settings to have it remain displayed, which I use. Note I tried this on an iPad mini 4 and iPhone 7.

Upper left corner...works on every phone/iPad...just pinch to zoom and it shows up. Only works in 2D view for obvious reasons.

"Paper maps required it for scale, but digital maps have so many other data points to provide scale with directions/distance." I respect your situation, but that is why I won't switch from Google. Every GPS of which I am aware, whether trekking, auto, motorcycle, aircraft, or marine includes the scale. I grew up, and grow up, using it.

I hear ya...I’m old...but think about it, what is the purpose?? People look at the map and type in where they want to go. It tells them how many miles in 1 second.

I mean Google’s fades away too...just 1/2 second later.

Menu allows making it persistent.

Totally missed that...don't use Google Maps often.

Do you mind saying what you use the scale for? When I used it with paper maps when I was a kid, I literally used a ruler with the scale to check distances. Just don't see a "regular" practical use for it now other than the quick reference Apple provides (and even then I hardly ever look at it).
