Unfortunately, no. The issue is caused by the boot ROM, irrespective of drive used.

In all seriousness: the hibernation issue is no big deal really. If I didn't know I disabled hibernation I would not realise at all.

Battery drain is barely if at all noticeable.

It may be noticeable if and when die MBP is in sleep mode for a couple of days or more, in which case I'd plug in the power cable anyway.

Hi,
I have also installed a Samsung 970 Evo 500GB in my Macbook Pro Eary 2014 (Mojave) with a Sintech Adapter.

Because hibernating is not working, tried to disable hibernation. But its also not working correctly.
After sleeping a few hours, the Macbook doesn't wake up. I only get a Blackscreen and have to hard reset.

I used this: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 autopoweroff 0 standby 1
And I tried: pmset -a hibernatemode 25 and sudo pmset -b tcpkeepalive 0

But my MacBook crashed most of the time after wake up.

Please help

This are the settings:
Currently in use:
standbydelaylow 10800
standby 1
halfdim 1
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
gpuswitch 2
powernap 0
disksleep 0
standbydelayhigh 86400
sleep 60
autopoweroffdelay 0
hibernatemode 0
autopoweroff 0
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 60
highstandbythreshold 50
acwake 0
lidwake 1

Hi, I did the upgrade to a 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO this morning and my MacBook Pro Mid-2014 runs well and snappy - but I notice that it gets much hotter than before. When the system has only minor tasks to do (like browsing via Safari), the CPU is around 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, but when I installed Microsoft Office I soon reached 70 degrees C. What's your experience on this and when do you think does it start to be a problem? I don't want to melt my CPUs. What temperatures do you think are still ok and when is it getting too much? I installed FanControl and told it to keep the temperature under around 70 degrees and when I boot the system the fan gets very noisy, so just booting makes my MacBook sweat. Is this a problem or can it be ignored?

Here are my settings for my mid 2014 Pro with Sintech adapter
Code:
 standbydelaylow 120
 standby 1
 womp 1
 halfdim 1
 hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
 powernap 1
 gpuswitch 2
 networkoversleep 0
 disksleep 1
 standbydelayhigh 300000
 sleep 0
 autopoweroffdelay 28800
 hibernatemode 0
 autopoweroff 0
 ttyskeepawake 1
 displaysleep 15
 highstandbythreshold 50
 acwake 0
 lidwake 0

Big differences I see are lid wake and sleep

About that last part and for that particular Nvme SSD I see that Kingston provides an updated firmware on their website. It can only be updated from windows tho. I couldn't find any changelog for that firmware but it can potentially fix that kind of issue. Maybe gilles can tell us if the ssds he tested were updated, in this case latest update is E7FT04.9 on the Kingston page and in the power consumption spreadsheet he reported firmware E7FT04.6
Hi,
Yes I have tested Kingston KC1000 a lot of times, and I also tried with the latest E7FT04.9 firmware (had to install a W10...).
And sorry, no the latest firmware doesn't change anything on the standby consumption of the KC1000...

I read that the 970 Evo runs quiet hot which is my problem too - what are your experiences with the Intel 770P? Is it working with less heat production?

Hm. Most of the time? Or each time?

I'm inclined to suspect there might be something else going on...

After short periods it seams to work. But after 8 hours I see a blackscreen.

@SloppolS , is the MacBook running the lastest bootrom? Was it a fresh install of Mojave or a restore?

Restored from a Timemachine Backup.

@sman789

thanks for sharing.
Do you know how I can change lidwake and sleep? Whats about disksleep? Its also different?!

@SloppolS, I'm not 100% sure but running the latest bootrom may help.

Deep sleep entails writing the ram contents to the SSD and powering off the MacBook. This results in no battery drain. When you open the lid, the contents are restored from the SSD and you will see a progress bar at the bottom of the display until the login screen appears.

By disabling deep sleep, the MacBook never powers itself off because the ram needs power to prevent the ram content from being lost.

In my case. I need to talk that upgrade BOOTROM maybe really help with various problems (hibernation issue and battery drain). Now I reinstall OS (BOOT from net installer - Option-⌘-R
Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac ) my MB PRO 2014 with ADATA 480GB SSD and small Sintech adaptor. It looks like that the probles are gone. From yesterday (fresh reinstall) I have a 100% battery and no issues. No changes after installation!, only close a lid! Actually 99% becouse Im trying to login and chcecking status of battery few times.

It looks like the problem is resolved. We believe that everything will be fine!

try:

sudo pmset -a standbydelaylow 604800

This should not make much of a difference; but you never know

Thanks, I can try this.

How can I figure out which BOOTROM version I have? I think I'm on the correct Version.
I was already on the latest MacOS Mojave before I installed the Sintech Adapter.
Procedure:
1. Update Macbook to latest Mojave (10.14.2)
2. Generate USB Boot Stick with latest Mojave
3. Plug In new Adapter with SSD
4. Boot from Stick
5. Restore Mojave with Timemachine

So I think there is no reason I'm not on the latest BOOTROM?!!?!

Here's a good guide for pmset editing, https://www.dssw.co.uk/reference/pmset.html.

The sudo pmset lidwake 0 would be to turn it off like mine. Sounds counterintuitive but it works lol. You can copy and paste your old settings into a txt file if you want a backup.

Thanks a lot. Very useful link!!

These settings seem to work for me now, I finally got hibernation fully disabled. No unwanted deep sleep and black screen on wake up within the last 24 hours of lid closed... AND 0% battery drain! So the ADATA SX8200pro 1TB with sintech short adapter seems to work like a charm now on my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with macOS Mojave 10.14.2 (18C54). I will check once again what happens when my laptop fully loses power ^^

This is my output of pmset -g

System-wide power settings:
Currently in use:
standbydelaylow 120
standby 1
halfdim 1
hibernatefile /dev/null
powernap 1
gpuswitch 2
disksleep 1
standbydelayhigh 86400
sleep 0 (sleep prevented by nfsd, useractivityd, sharingd)
autopoweroffdelay 0
hibernatemode 0
autopoweroff 0
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 5
highstandbythreshold 50
acwake 0
lidwake 1

For example use this instruction:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201518
https://anandmpandit.blogspot.com/2011/03/how-to-find-firmware-or-boot-rom.html

And latest BOOTROM ID is for example here:
https://eclecticlight.co/2018/10/31/which-efi-firmware-should-your-mac-be-using-version-3/

I have: 149.0.0.0.0
