Hello, I am new here.
I have a rMBP late 2013 with macOS Mojave 10.14.4 (model:A1502), recently I want to upgrade to 1tb ssd (original: 5oo gb apple ssd).
I have ordered a samsung PM961 1tb m.2 nome ssd.
I read some thread and reply, but seldom of them mentioned about this kind of ssd installing on this model of rMBP.
Does anyone know any about this brand of SSD?
Do I need to mod the bootrom after installing it?

Thank you all a lot!

he/she has a unicorn also. ;-)

how many hours have you tested? can you post your pmset -g output
thanks
The reason it is working with hibernate mode 3 is because mode 3 is a hybrid between mode 0 and 25 and it depends on the current charge of the battery as well as if the computer turns off.

In pmset settings there is Standby, standby delay low, standby delay high. When you close the lid of the macbook with standby = 1 then it goes into sleep mode for a specified amount of time. If the macbook remains untouched and the battery is high, then hibernate mode 3 will kick in after 86400 seconds, if the battery is low hibernate mode 3 will kick in after "Standbydelaylow" seconds.

Mode 3 copies the contents to ram and SSD it is a safer version of 0 which only copies contents to ram, and a faster wakeup version than mode 25. If you wakeup your mac and the mac hasn't shut down due to low battery then mode 3 will restore the contents from RAM just like mode 0 (This is why it works for 2014), if your battery runs out or goes very low the macbook will turn off completely with the contents stored to SSD as well, if you attempt to wake up your mac from this state with a power cord, the mac will crash because the RAM contents are lost and the system tries to restore the state of the PC from the image stored on the SSD just like mode 25 does. This is where you will hear the restart sound twice and its exactly the problem for pre-2015 models.

Turning off standby prevents this delay and the macbook goes directly into hibernate mode 3 so a repeat of the process above, if the battery is charged it will restore the contents from RAM, if it goes low and turns off it will crash.

thank you, that does explain a lot!

so, what's the best way to handle all this on the 2014 macbooks?

Set hibernate mode to 0, turn off your mac if its going to be on standby for a while, this will prevent data loss if your pc turns off. I don't know if mode 3 and mode 25 restore your content properly when the PC crashes and restarts cause the contents are technically saved it just can't restore them on wakeup, but either way the fact that it crashes isn't good so stick with mode 0!

Won’t the mac still go into hibernate after the standby seconds are reached (even in mode 0)? So should the standby also be touched just to be safe?

The read and write speeds of the 961 are going to be limited by the MacBook's pci-e bus speed.

It's also been reported in this thread that Samsung drives cause higher battery drain and heat.

Anyone tried the new Plextor M9Pe? Seems like a great drive for a good price today at Newegg...

Not sure if being double sided would cause any problems for installation on a Mid-2014 15" MBP...

I think double sided will work if you use the small Sintech adapter.

There are people in this thread using 512 GB and 1 TB drives that are not single-sided.

Hello,

i have a new Samsung SSD 970 Evo Plus 1TB (https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/970evoplus/) with this sintech adapter (http://eshop.sintech.cn/ngff-m2-pcie-ssd-card-as-2013-2014-2015-macbook-ssd-p-1139.html) in my Macbook Air Mid 2013.
I booted mac os mojave from my usb stick. Then i tried to erase the ssd to AFPS. In the meantime the macbook air reboots with no exception.
So i thought the process was not succesful.

After that i erase the ssd to the mac os journaled format which was succesful.
So i tried to install mac os mojave. During the installation process the macbook air reboots and shows "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up."

Any suggestions?

Did you try reinstalling the drive and adapter?

The MacBook is running the latest bootrom?

Tried internet recovery to install the os?

Were you able to confirm the drive is working in another computer?

Tried creating a Mojave usb installer with a different flash drive?

hello, replaced ssd in macbook 13 2014 - on Kingston SHPM2280P2 (AHCI). Sometimes appears at boot time flashing question mark, after a few reboot loaded successfully (and sometimes when leaving sleep) hibernatemode 3, battery ok. Need to change the adapter? adapter short green, contacts kapton tape

set hibernate mode to 0 and/ or try different adapter.

That's correct, mode 0 just copies contents to RAM only. If you disable standby when you close the lid the mac will go directly into hibernate mode 0. Disabling standby is recommended because the idle power consumption of NVME drives is higher than the stock apple SSD and the wakeup time difference wont be noticeable. If you leave standby on, you may experience higher battery drain when the lid is closed until standbydelay seconds are reached.

Hi guys, i have a Macbook Air 11inch early 2015 model and i want to upgrade the ssd on it. So can someone recommend what affordable ssds are available for my mac model. And what sintech adapter i am gonna need? Black or green? TIA
