Hello guys !
I have a MacBook Pro Early 2015 13", I tried to upgrade the SSD with the 970 EVO Plus 500Gb, the installation of Mojave crashed everytime with a kernel panic error. However, I managed to install Windows and use it without problem.
I will try the SN750 this week and post the results.
There have been reports by other members that the 970 Evo Plus panics.

May I ask what the sn750 is?

Thanks.

Did you check with the Samsung Magician Software (Windows) if an firmware update for the 970 EVO Plus is available?

I have the same problem: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...sd-to-m-2-nvme.2034976/page-136#post-27101919

I bought a used 15” 2015 MacBook Pro today for a great price. It has a 512gb Apple SSD but I’d like to put in 1TB. After reading this thread I determined my Best Buy is the Adata SX8200 Pro. When I search for it on Amazon I get this

XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB 3D NAND NVMe Gen3x4 PCIe M.2 2280 Solid State Drive R/W 3500/3000MB/s SSD (ASX8200PNP-1TT-C) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K1J3C23/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_GADACbB5VGKDD

Is this it?

Also I’m concerned about the back not closing with the long Sintech adapter but the short one isn’t Prime and has a delivery estimate Mar 1-Apr 1. Will the long work for me?

Thank you

Buy the long one and cut it down to size

If you want the SX8200 (960 GB) you can find it on Rakuten. It's about $50 cheaper. I see it for $153 right now with the sale they have going on. I got mine in five days. No idea if they charge tax (I wasn't when I bought in October).

Can't speak for the back not closing as I have a 13" 2015, I did notice the back wouldn't go in all the way on its own when I pushed down the tabs but it yielded easily with minimal pressure and the screws went in without a fuss. That was in October/November and it has been just fine.

I ordered the Pro and long adapter from Amazon. Will be here Tuesday.

Then I’ll upgrade my moms 2014 Air (128gb) to my old 512gb

EX950 2TB in a 2015 15" MBP

This seems really underwhelming to me..
Am I reading this wrong or missing something?

The numbers look good to me.

I find that benchmarks don't mean much unless you are constantly reading and writing to the drive.

Thx..
Things seem to be going mostly ok so far, but the precarious way this install and data transfer has gone has me a bit hesitant. I'm going to ride it out for a few days and see where I'm at.

When using nvme drive it shows as external at the boot menu this also causes problems installing windows. Once in macOS it sows as internal

Hadn't read about the windows problem in the thread till now - must've missed it sadly. Is there a workaround documented anywhere?

I'll definitely look to dual boot windows 10 & mohave as that's what I do today and ideally with the extra space of a new nvme drive, would like to have a look at linux via triple boot too - maybe that's a bridge too far...

I agree that a sticky / summary of all the key info somewhere would be useful.

I’m using the 660p 512GB model. Got it for $99 at memoryexpress. So far I left it in hibernatemode 3 and it lost battery pretty quick so I’ve set it to mode 0 and going to see how that goes. As for power during use I’m not sure yet but I’ve read that it uses a lot less power than Samsung and others. However the 760p has even lower consumption ratings based on other people’s tests.
Seems like it, i bought the 760p in december it was 150$ at canada computers and its a very robust drive apart from the fact that the write speed declines a bit in MacOS. My experience is consistent with others in this thread. I noticed it uses a lot less power than my original sx8200 before it failed on me. I think I will stick with the 760p given that it has high endurance and that 0.2w difference probably wont be noticeable.

What I'd love is for MacOS to support PCIE Active State Power Management which regulates the power of NVME even more, there are tests showing the 760p to consume 0.067W at idle in windows when ASPM is enabled but in MAC we're sutck at 0.6W idle :(

@Audit13

Do you have any sort of stress testing or tasks you'd recommend I do over the course of the day/night to verify correct (fully correct) operation of this EX950?

I really want to make sure this is a good move to keep this thing.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any program to really stress the drive other than running benchmarks.

If you can't easily reinstall Mac os to the drive, either through internet recovery, recovery, or from a usb installer, a different drive may be the better route. My understanding is that Mac OS was eventually installed onto the drive but not without encountering issues.

Regardless of whether one is installing or restoring the OS to the original or nvme drive, a person should not encounter any difference in the installation or restore process.

That is the root of my concerns also.
The difference beteeen this one and how it went with the EVO 970 was stark.
EVO 970 behaved essentially like native.

Apple uses Samsung in the native drives yeah?
Maybe there’s something to that?

But then again. Now the EVO plus drives aren’t working well?
Frustrating for sure

I know that the Apple SSD is made by Samsung but they have custom Apple firmware. Also, the Apple drive is AHCI vs the 970 which is nvme.

What was your best recommendation on another one SSD to try?

I do want 2TB, but I don't want inferior performance from the native 1TB is my main thing...(it's performance isn't super amazing these days anyhow - at least not relative to new NVMe options)

Anyone know anything about this guy?

How easy/hard is it to cut down? Otherwise I can find the short one on eBay with Friday delivery. SSD will be here tomorrow though.

Noticed the line at the edge of where the main part of the board ends?

I would try to find a drive that has been used by other users like the Intel 760p. There seems to be a greater choice in 1 TB size. 2 TB drives are expensive and hard to find in Canada at the moment.

The Addlink s70 certainly looks promising but you may also run into the same issues.
