Could you show SSD power consumption in iStats?

just took this a few minutes ago while browsing.

check out this guy's customer review on Amazon.

I think that the Sabrent Rocket has better power performance than the SX8200 Pro according to the chart on the 1st page of this forum...? My order on Bonanza is in limbo and I really need a new drive, think I might just cancel my order, get my money back, and get the 2TB Sabrent Rocket instead at this point, but I'll give it until later today to finalize my decision.

edit: one guy on the previous page stated his results with the Rocket. 8 hours? That’s pretty impressive to me, be sure to use Safari instead of Chrome when on your battery to get the best results.
Careful, its just the standard SX8200 on the chart. Not the "Pro" version.

Which of the three Sabrent models are you thinking of getting?

I just noticed there are 3! Lol, well one of them is Gen4 which doesn’t seem to be optimal for my 2015 MBP 15”..? Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, I’ve only seen or heard Gen3 being ideal. The other one is dual-sided which apparently doesn’t work right with the adapter. This is the one I’m currently looking at.

This review does not talk about relieving power drain like you say this long adapter does, it only discusses sleep/wake/crash issues as relieved.

Yeah I noticed that too, which is why I care here for advice. Some of the reviews make claims about better battery, but I don’t see the stats to back it up. Vince22 seems to have provided some interesting information in my opinion tho to help influence my decision.

Vince said he has a 1TB drive and you want 2TB, power consumption may be different. Also his 0 idle reading may be a fluke. Is it repeatable when idle?

It would appear that Sabrent and the E12 reference design is a lottery.

Good thread on Reddit, highlight is basically:

"My advice moving forward is to purchase E12 drives with caution, however from what I've seen so far I don't expect there to be any significant performance difference, although there appears to be less DRAM on some changed drives"

There appears to be moves afoot to cheapen the manufacturing process, some of the new 2Tb drives only have 512MB of Dram.

Link please? Which of the 2 TB drives are impacted by this? Could this relate to the recent reports here of Sabrent 2TB overheating?

it is 1TB and it does goes up to 0.16A while watching videos.

i think this is he was referring to. Dang, not sure what to do... might switch back to the SX8200 Pro for my choice, it doesn’t have this DRAM nitpicking aspect to it.. Its better to get what you pay for. Can you check how much DRAM you have Vince?

firmware utility runs for windows PC only, I’m not sure how to check without removing the heat sink.

No offence but your overthinking this.

Want a top tier drive? Pay the extra and buy a Samsung.

Sabrent / Phison E12 or Adata / SM2262EN ?

I'd prefer a chipset that big players like HP / Intel use over some lesser brand names like Inland / Pioneer / Silicon Power.

I'm not biased by the way. I have 3 mid 2015's with 970 EVO, 8200 pro and Sabrent rocket. And they are ALL horrible with battery life. No combination of A,B,C type Sintec adapters are going to sort that out. It's at OS nVME driver level and there's nothing you can do about it apart from choose a drive with the lowest power consumption..

Breaking news....

Appears that a release of patched nVME kext may be imminent with correctly implemented ACPI power states for 3rd party nVME drives. This will be HUGE if it comes off, expect improved power consumption at idle.

Note:

This will not address hibernation / sleep issues on other non mid-2015 15" models.

Which Samsung’s? Especially which 2TB? It has been said by Sintech to avoid Samsung.

Sorry, stick an https:// at the front of the link. For some reason it was embedding the entire post in my reply, hence the reason for omitting the https part.

2tb EVO:

I do apologize, it appears the 970 EVO is end of life. The Plus model works after a firmware update, just that you'll need an nVME enclosure and a Windows PC to patch it.

I don't think Sintech ever said to avoid the 970 EVO , quite the contrary in fact. Just to clarify things, I have a 1tb 970 EVO in my 11,4

They did specifically say to avoid the 970 on their question and answer section on Amazon because it will drain your battery faster than the other drives on their specified list. I personally don’t believe that I am overthinking this decision, but I am going to stick with the SX8200 Pro instead of the Sabrent Rocket because of the 1/2 DRAM hardware update issue. I just wanted an ideal 2TB drive with better read/write performance than stock and a decent battery consumption for an affordable price.

That github page looks promising tho, got something to look forward to. Thanks for sharing.

If you get SATA you will get lower read and write speeds than stock, NVME are faster but in your case you have to check your PCIe version, 2x or 4x
But it WILL work, yeah?
And also, nobody talks about regular PCIe SSDs, not NVMe. Maybe they are a right choice?

Haven't had time to run the full gamut of tests yet, but the Sabrent Rocket 2TB in my 2015 15" MacBook pro, 2.8 GHz, discrete graphics 16 GB RAM is showing .21 Amps at Idle. 93 Degrees (F I presume). Tops out at 1.8 Amps (briefly) and 122 degrees on Blackmagic speed test.
