Just checked and both 2.4 or 5 work.
Thanks for info. By me is 5GHz also working but is not possible to log in on 2.4GHz, even if I see the network. In windows 10 is working both ok. But I have the last big sur installed not a monterey. So it has to be some driver issue. But anyway thanks for the check.
Can you please make printscreen of what wifi version is at your mac installed? See mine.

PS: Does anybody know if is possible to instal monterey driver on big sur? And how?

I've seen this before, but the A2000 actually does idle at 0.0A (and it's not fluke), but previously, it doesn't really register on the graph (just a flat line).

Is an NVME faster than the stock SSD in the late 2013 MacBook Pro? Will the machine run much faster?

A month ago I had a look at the speed of the original ssd of the 15“ mid 2015 (which has already PCIe x4) in comparison to the 970 EVO plus (both SSD internally).

BTW originally it came as well with a Samsung SSD, labeled as „apple“).

Original SSD = About 2.000 read and 1.200 writes
970 EVO plus = about 2.800 read and write

IIRC models older than 2015 should still have been equipped with PCIe x3 Which is limited to 1.700 at best.

here is the old macrumor test from 2015, in this article they mention the MBP 2013 ret. As well:

I ran tests and using black magic speedtests mine is definitely 2-3 times faster on tests but do I notice it in real life after a few hours, can't say I do. I upgraded mainly bc I only had 128gb and saw Crucial P2 1Tb at a good price. I mainly use Teams meeting / Skype for work and need to share many files and getting fed up with google cloud.

Hi all,

This thread is extremely overwhelming to read! I've read through almost 300-pages worth of discussions over quite a long time and still confused. The table in the first page seems to be outdated (last update on 2020) and info otherwise seems sparse/confusing/inconsistent so I felt that asking would be better...

I need help to figure out the "best" NVMe when it comes to "stock" longevity/power efficiency and performance between several NVMe to upgrade my MBP 13" Early 2015 (MacbookPro12,1 / A1502) from stock Apple SSD to a 1TB SSD. My MBP is currently running MacOS Monterey 12.2.1, BootRom 428.60.3.0.0.

My selected options are:
  • Intel 670p ($90.00)
  • SiliconPower P34A80 ($92.00)
  • HP EX950 ($110.00)
  • SK Hynix Gold P31 ($110.00)
  • Sabrent Rocket Q, light blue ($90.00)
I don't plan to install any kexts (while I'm aware of the benefits, I'm reluctant to modify system-level settings since I'm not too "tech-savvy"; additionally it sounds like it was recently found that benefits are now marginal?).

I saw that someone mention that for battery life, best to pick one with Phison/SM controller, which would be the HP EX950 or Rocket Q on my list. Though, it seems that recently Gold P31 is rising in popularity?

However, I noticed that most of the praises for the NVMes in this thread recently have been on devices with some kext variants applied or close-to-nonexistent reporting. Would anyone be able to provide advice on any of these on which is "best" when kexts are not in the equation?

Much thanks!

Note: I crossed out 670p and P34A80 because this web from a user in this thread seems to suggest they have very-low TBW endurance compared to the remaining 3. I left it there in case others might want to consider it (if it's any good)

Hi all....
Now that we know that SK Hynix Gold P31 works with the machines, no one should be looking at anything else other than the SK Hynix Gold P31. It is the most power efficient and speeds that go beyond what the lanes in our machines can handle. I plopped it into my 2014 machine and installed SsdPmEnabler, which took a minute, let MacOS finish re-indexing and the power idles at around 0.00 - 0.03. Sometimes it would idle at 0.13 when processes are running.

I remember opening up my MacBook and seeing my battery percentage being where it was where I left it. Always.

Hello everyone, has anyone been able to install Windows 10 with a Crucial P2 in a MacBook11,1?
I need a bit of help, I was able to install and setup, but when I get to the login screen it shows a BSOD.
Windows 11 can't even partition the drive.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Much appreciated for the response! It seems like you've used SsdPmEnabler when you observed this "efficiency".

As I mentioned in my original question, I have NO intention to add any kexts or its variants (whether it be SsdPmEnabler, NVMeFix, lilu, OpenCore, etc). Given this, can we still expect the same "performance" or "efficiency" from Gold P31 when compared to the others in my list (assuming also WITHOUT kexts)?

Out of my search, so far there was only one post that mentioned using P31 WITHOUT kexts and unfortunately almost every other report I've seen had some sort of kexts applied to it. Thus, I couldn't really assess/compare them (or did I miss posts discussing this?). Info on Sabrent Rocket Q is also quite sparse it seems...

I'm not worried about R/W speeds as I'm quite content with default Apple SSD already, so anything better is a bonus. Primarily, I was trying to gauge if the extra $20.00 is worth it over Sabrent Rocket Q IF WITHOUT kexts (with respect to longevity and/or power efficiency)--was hoping somebody had knowledge of this...

Or should I not bother and just grab the P31?

January 2021 I put a 1TB Crucial P2 in my Late 2013 MacbookPro 11,1 based on where this thread was at back then. The extra space was a massive improvement over the 250GB I bought it with.

After 14 months (6,200 hours on-time) and only 8TBW I've ditched it in favour of a 2TB P31. What a difference. I was unlucky enough to get one of the newer QLC P2s and it just degraded into a performance nightmare. Quick performance benchmarks were ok, but sustained reads were below 600MBs (down to below 200MB/s on some parts of the drive) and sustained writes started at ~500MB/s and dropped to ~40MB/s once the SLC cache filled up.

The P31 is much nicer. Will be interesting to see how that performs over the next year.

@helpmeplease22

It seems that your MBP is a version already equipped with 4xPCIe 3.0 - so you are lucky.
As for the SSD-Speeds of the originally build-in SSD the already mentioned link to everymac says this MBP 12,1 type is sporting:

*Third-party tests using the Blackmagic benchmark report write speeds of 643.6 MB/s and read speeds of 1.3 GB/s."

It seems that you can reach much higher speeds - if you select a reliable adapter and a reliable SSD.
Just have a look at the various reports about a lot of combinations here in this thread.
So should I get the Sintech (long) adapter as well paired with a Samsung 970 EVO plus? Could you also explain what the Phoenix Controller is and if there is any way to get the old firmware? Thank you!

can you explain the SSDpmenable for me please? Im trying to install a SSD on my 2015 macbook Pro (specs below)
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro12,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2

And I have read like the user above pages of pages of pages and one helpful user suggested the Sintech adaptor with the SAMSUNG evo pro. So you are suggesting the SK hynix Gold P31?

Thank you for anything. Just want the best package with a lot of storage/speed.

SSDPMEnabler simply means SSD Power Management Enabler. Based on the author's claims, it manages how non-Apple NVMe SSDs consume power, especially during idle mode.

It has a similar (if not the same) functionalities as the NVMeFix, which is included in OCLP. You can install NVMeFix through Opencore without having to upgrade to Monterey (or previously Big Sur), as I have inadvertently, and my A2000's idle power went down to almost zero at times.

Now I'm wondering why some people are installing both when they can use either one.

Just wanted to share my own experience.

I got hold of a 13“ early 2015 Macbook Pro with original 256 GB SSD. After diving deep into this thread, I decided to upgrade it with the 1TB Kingston A2000 and the long Sintech adapter because it came in a set with the torx screw drivers needed to open the Mac and swap out the SSD.

My priorities in choosing the Kingston were compatibility, reliability, and low power consumption, rather than speed. I also wanted to make sure the SSD was using TLC memory, after reading on Amazon that some manufacturers like Crucial had switched to QLC.

The whole transition was seamless from start to finish: Installed Monterey on the original SSD to get the latest bootrom, created a bootable USB stick for Monterey, opened up the Mac, disconnected the battery (hardest part of the operation), swapped out the SSD, started the Macbook from the bootable stick, formatted the SSD to APFS, installed Monterey on it, transferred everything else with migration assistant – job done.

The set-up is running smoothly, no problems with sleep or wake-up, no change in battery life, not losing excessive charge during sleep, no need for additional kexts, no panics, no nothing, speed is as expected.

I am very happy with my new old Macbook. Thanks for everyone’s contribution on here which helped me find the optimal solution for my needs.

TLDR works great with 1TB Kingston A2000 and Monterey for 13“ early 2015 Macbook Pro.

Is there no other way than getting a hold of an original drive if the firmware is too old? I have a 13" late 2013 MBP with a dead drive. Bought the Sintech adapter and a Crucial P2, but I get the error message about firmware. This computer has not been in use for at least three years.

I guess I'll just put it in the electronics waste at work if there's no other solution. I'm not buying a used SSD to get another SSD working on a nine year old MBP.

There's no other way to go about it. If you know someone, or know of a service center guy, maybe they can help with your dilemma.

Thank you for the clarification, I found a 128 Gb original SSD at a local auction dealer for $20, so I'll try with that and then sell that SSD on to the next person who needs it. :)
