Greetings, guys! I'm carefully following this thread but got into a dead end myself and i really need your help. I have a rMBP 2014 15". It had a mavericks installed on it's native apple AHCI ssd but the drive died before i could update to sierra or high sierra. Now i have a toshiba xg3 nvme ssd with the sintech adapter but can't seem to update the firmware with any way. So i understand that i have to find any native apple AHCI ssd and update to HS. My GF has MBA Early 2015 with HS already installed on her AHCI ssd and it's filled with important data of her work. Can i somehow pull it out and update my rMBP 2014 firmware without corrupting data on the AHCI ssd? As i understand when i'll put it in my rMBP it will just boot into HS but how can i update the firmware without committing to install HS cause it's already installed there? I'm really looking for your help! Alex

Hello, I am trying to help my overseas nephew upgrade his Mid-2014 MacBook Pro to Samsung 960 EVO NVMe SSD 500GB. He was able to install the SSD with another (green) sintech adapter I sent him. He also installed MacOS and partitioned the SSD with Boot Camp Assistant. The problem however started when the Mac got first rebooted to begin the Windows 10 installation, as the installer could NOT recognize the windows partition on the SSD. Hence there is no way to continue the installation. Anyone with the same / similar experience have got a solution? Thanks in advance.

Create a time back back up, on two different drives, put your ssd into the air, restore the air from time machine, make sure everything is okay. Put the air ssd into the MacBook pro, update to 10.13.6 if the air is running an earlier version; otherwise, you'll have to wipe the air ssd and do a clean install of high Sierra. Don't know of any other way to update the bootrom.

Damn! That's a really strange and irrational procedure o_O. Is there rly no other way of doing this?

There seems to be some dependency between EFI firmware programming mode (aka the update) and using a boot device the EFI firmware recognizes as "internal". At the very least, you can try to perform a firmware update with your girlfriend's SSD:
  1. Back up your girlfriend's MacBook
  2. Put that SSD into the MacBook you intent to update
  3. Boot the target MacBook from that SSD and place the firmware from the High Sierra installer/installation media/ combo update somewhere on the drive
  4. Manually "bless" the firmware and reboot
    Code:
    ~$ sudo bless -mount / -firmware Desktop/MBP112_X_Y.scap
  5. Validate via System Information
Note that this will not work with a modified SCAP to that includes a firmware hack.

Thanks a lot for that workaround! I think i got a hint on how to do it in my situation. My GF still has 10.13.3 HS installed and it's not the up to date version of HS i think. Can i update firmware on my MBP by pulling out this one with 10.13.3 from MBA, installing it in my MBP, booting into 10.13.3 HS and updating it to 10.13.6 or what is the latest version at the moment? Will it fork for me? And is there any risk to data on the AHCI ssd? I will pull it back straight after the update and continue with installing nvme xg3 ssd, booting from the USB installer of HS and installing it. Thanks a lot! I appreciate your help, guys!

Can you check if his magSafe is plugged? In my experience, when the power was not supplied, windows installer couldn't find the partition for install. So I solved the problem with that way at that time. In this case, once he succeeds to set up win10 and boot up, he must change the power management setting from balanced setting to high performance while receiving an external power by MagSafe's plugging. Then he can use it normally without external power. Without external power and without changing the setting he can face with abnormal BSOD when starting up and even at any time he's using computer in Win10

Were you able to try any of the suggested solutions?

Perhaps @gilles_polysoft has a solution to your issue.
I really hope so. Right now i need to know if there's any risk to data on the AHCI ssd of my GF if i pull it out, boot, and update it from 10.13.3 to 10.13.6 on my MBP. Looks like not a risky thing but she will kill me if some data will get corrupted :D.

I was not suggesting an update of macOS; merely a firmware update as a shortcut. In either case, a backup of that SSD is highly recommended.

Yeah i got it! But will the update from 10.13.3 to 10.13.6 update my firmware? Is this small update enough to initialize this procedure?

Yes, the update from 10.13.3 to 10.13.6 should be enough to update the os on the SSD to 10.13.6 and the bootrom to the latest.

I went from 10.13.5 to 10.13.6 and the bootrom on my late 2013 13" was updated too.

That's great news! Thanks for the info! But i can't see what's the risk with the data on the AHCI ssd? The only thing that i will do is a small HS update and that's it.

There is always a risk of data loss from just turning on a laptop which is why everyone was mentioning backups.

In the end, if you don't want to risk it, buy or borrow another apple oem SSD to perform the upgrade.

Yes I would always make backups. I can't be 100% syre with regard to just updating, it might be beneficial to do a full clean install. Perform a System profiler check before and after.

Sorry if I am not making too much sense; I have been in hospital for the last 3 days drugged up to my eyeballs.

Good news with the toshiba XG-5 it was simply the beta version of Mojave I was running that sucked down the battery. My mac has been in my bag for a week, and only lost 20% of its juice with stock energy saver settings... on Mojave! :)

Nobody really understands why you're asking this question because it would be ridiculous to try anything with your girlfriend's SSD without backing it up first.

:D
I just can't see what's particular risky in this and it's a bit tough and time consuming to backup ~500Gb and then restore them back. That's why i hope there's nothing too dangerous in a small os update ;).

I recommend having an up-to-date backup regardless of whether the SSD will or won't be used to update the Pro.

Not sure how the Air SSD could have 500 GB of files since 512 GB is the max size I have seen as an option for the Air.

I'm finally decided: today I will buy one of the of this two 2TB solution: the Toshiba XG5-P 2TB (I have find on rutronik24.com but will arrive in September) or the Samsung 970 Evo (can arrive in 1 day).
Just last doubt is because of consumption and heat in a MBP mid 2015. Someone have comparison data before and after such a upgrades (temperature, battery life)? Could be interesting for the community to have a table with this infos.
If the differences aren't too big I will buy the 970 but if there is too much heat (and less battery life) maybe I will consider to wait two more months...
In any case I will update my results.
Thanks again to all

Andrea
