I was going to but according to my IUP information, I’m a month short which I’m a bit confused about because I got the X on launch day last year.

My info is telling me I need to pay £63ish and the upfront payment.

I wasn’t sure whether to do the upgrade but this has convinced me not to for the moment.

What do you mean by you pay extra for ATT Next, isn't it the same $999 spread out over 24 months (with upgrade half way though at 1 year?)
1 year versus 2 year. 2 year is less money paid every month

The X came out in November, so everyone is a month short unless you pay the extra month off early.

I am going to because I feel like if I don’t I am paying more than what my now 1 year old 8plus is worth... but really struggling which model to get

Yes. But you have to have made 12 payments on the iPhone Upgrade program. The iPhone X has been out for 11 months. Back and forth between Apple and Citizen's One. It takes 72 hours to post a payment over the phone and you can't make a payment on the web if you're current. I have called twice and gotten 2 different answers on whether or not I'll be able to preorder at midnight on Friday even though I've completed the approval process. Has anyone else had experience with having to make a twelfth payment at preorder? Apple says you can't do that.
At checkout you would pay the extra payment. I'm pretty sure that's what I read others have said.

I thought the Apple Care was split over 24 months as well on IUP so how can you request a refund of half Apple Care?

Fair point. I guess it's a refund on what I've paid so far (half the cost of AppleCare over 12 mo) since I have never had to use it. I just know the Apple rep told me that on my first upgrade year and I've done it ever since.

So why would you want to trade it in?
I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at. I wasn't advocating trading it in. Someone mentioned that there is no incentive to not upgrade and I explained there is an incentive to not upgrade. Incentive being that you will save at least $400 by waiting one more year.

I'm having the same decision struggles as others here.

My wife and I are on AT&T Next Every Year, and have upgraded iPhones every year since 2007. We have the X, and for the first time I can definitely say that this iPhone is such a great phone in every respect that it leaves me wanting nothing. I have zero complaints about the design, speed, screen quality, photo quality, etc. In past iPhone generations, there was always at least one thing I wish was better. Not any more. This makes it hard to decide whether the upgrade is worth it.

The Xs is clearly improved in a number of ways. The question is, are the improvements enough to make the upgrade worth it?

We don't play intense games on our phones, so all the CPU/GPU improvements aren't that important, especially given how fast the X already is. FaceID speed improvements sound great, but not sure how much faster it really is. We do take a lot of pics and videos and are photography buffs, so the camera improvements are compelling, but we don't have real-world testing data yet until the reviews hit. So it's hard to say how well those improvements translate in real-life use. If they are significant improvements, then it is probably worth it to us.

Sure, we're already on Next, so we can upgrade without paying any more than we already are, and that's the habit we got into a long time ago. But if we didn't upgrade, then the phones we have now would be paid off in 12 more months, we'd then own the phones, and they'd be worth (I figure) about $450 each on eBay (times two phones). That resale value essentially offsets the payments we would make over the next year. So there is a big financial advantage to holding off. But I'd pay a convenience penalty by having to then deal with selling them on eBay. We switched to Next so that we wouldn't have to do that anymore. Though, I ran into extreme difficulties with AT&T last year over a returned phone that they had no record of receiving, so there's that too. At least I know how to deal with that if it comes up again (email the CEO email address-it worked like magic).

This would be easier if I could just see how big the camera improvements really are.

I'll likely go through with the preorder, knowing that I can read the reviews when they come out and cancel if we change our minds.

I bought my 256GB X on launch day last year and was leaning towards upgrading, but now I’m having 2nd thoughts. I’m on the AT&T Next plan that allows you to upgrade every year, and I had to pay $95 and change to be able to upgrade on Friday, which I already did; however, I also had to pay $549 a month ago to replace my phone because I dropped it. Thinking about sitting this one out, continuing to make my monthly payments for the next year and then I’ll own my phone outright by this time next year. Then I can buy whatever comes out next year and sell my X to recoup some of my losses. I’m someone that likes to have the latest and greatest but I’m thinking it’s better for me to wait this time around. Would love to give the Max a try though...

I'm on an 8+ with IUP, thinking about giving the Max a try as I actually see the Max as an upgrade in a lot of ways over the 8+ (AKA 7s+, LOL).

If I had the X, I would've stayed where I'm at as I don't see the value of moving from the X to the Xs. My wife has the X so curious what she'll want to do...

I wish I could come to terms with the larger size of the Xs Max, because then the upgrade would make more sense. But while I'd love the larger display, I found that lugging the 7 Plus around was just a bit much.

Interesting read on AT&T.

I’m used to the larger size. When I got the 7 Plus, it took a couple weeks to come to terms with it but then I was fine. Before I got my 8 Plus I was considering getting the X but then played around with my old 6 and it just felt too tiny so ended up doing the 8 Plus instead.

I think I’ll be ok with the Max since as far as the body goes, it’s about the same size as the 8 Plus, just a hair smaller but a lot more screen which is what I think will be the biggest adjustment, 6.5” screen in the same size frame as my current 5.5” screen which means more of a thumb workout navigating the larger real estate.

I’m already accustomed to the larger phone size in my pocket so no issue there.

I use my iPhone for pro photography and I also store my entire music library (200+GB) on my phone as well. I have been waiting for a 512GB iPhone for quite some time now. I also am used to large phones so I am stoked for the 6.5in screen.

You just made an excellent point and convinced me to NOT get the Max - thank you! Here I was thinking that I could get used to the size of the phone, but what I wasn’t considering was getting used to the size of the screen. During my brief time with my 7+ I struggled with stretching my thumbs to reach the outer edges of the screen and I ended up exchanging it for a 7. My thumbs haven’t grown at all so that would only be worse with the even larger screen on the Max. If I upgrade it’s definitely the Xs for me.

Now I need everyone’s help with my math here. As I mentioned earlier I have made 12 payments of $47.88 towards my 256GB X so that’s about $575 (plus the $78.99 in tax I paid upfront for it and the $25 upgrade fee). Then I broke the phone and paid $549 (plus tax?) to have it replaced so that puts me at least $1288 into this phone right now. Do I dump another $575 into it (12 more monthly payments of $47.88 on the Next plan) to own the phone and then try to sell it one year from now when I upgrade to whatever phone comes out next year? I know that nobody can predict what my X will be worth next year at this time but even if I get $500 for it (not likely) I will still have paid about $1350 for the phone. Or am
I better off cutting my losses with my X now and getting a 256GB or 512GB Xs and starting to make payments on that?

Of course it is. If you’re on any payment plan, you basically lose all the money you’ve paid towards the phone thus far.

Unless you’re lucky enough to sell your current phone at whatever price you originally paid for it, you will lose money.

Some people have to think before posting.

Yes. Sales tax for full amount of device due at purchase/pre-order.
If they were planning on getting new model after 1 year. What you paid and what you can get selling is about the same. Close enough for less hassle. So why not.

Some of these monetary decisions should just come down to what you want.
Need to place value on personal satisfaction sometimes.

I get that but I’m talking strictly economics here. I feel like I’m better off holding on to my X but I don’t know if I’m missing something. I don’t feel strongly one way or the other about upgrading or not upgrading - I just don’t want to throw good money after bad.

Is there any benefit to going through the 2nd year and then owning the phone? Will there be a good resale value since this was the ‘10 year anniversary’ phone and the iPhone X is now discountinued? This may help recoup some of the money back no?
Trade in value will probably be around $150-$200. Something but not a lot. Could have as back up iPhone for emergencies. Other than these, not much

On upgrade plan with Apple? People pay monthly for coverage. Nothing to return. If you buy AppleCare in full then maybe entitled to refund for unused portion.

I just contact Apple via chat once I've gotten the email that they got the phone back, or after I've exchanged it in person. I tell them I'd like a refund on the Apple Care for my previous iUP device. They confirm they got it and then issue me a refund.

You don't have to believe it if you don't want to.
