I just contact Apple via chat once I've gotten the email that they got the phone back, or after I've exchanged it in person. I tell them I'd like a refund on the Apple Care for my previous iUP device. They confirm they got it and then issue me a refund.

Apple Care is not a monthly plan. As far as Apple is concerned, you've paid in full for device & Apple Care. You're paying the Citizen's One bank loan in monthly installments. Since the device has been returned and I've never used Apple Care, they refund me for the year I had Apple Care. But you don't have to believe it if you don't want to.
I'm going to give it a shot, thanks!!

Yeah, it's either a pro rated refund on the Apple care that's divided up over payments or the remaining if paid in full. But I swear you have to pay for it up front along w/ the tax and first month. It's probably bad that I don't check anymore as I've been on iUP for a few years now lol. Either way, you can get some $ back for Apple Care. Here's a link with some other info.

Talked it over with my wife tonight and we both agreed not to upgrade our iPhones this year, at least not right at the moment. Improvements from X to Xs not significant enough given how we use the phones, and how great the X already is. Once they are in stores, we’ll try them out and also read reviews and see if that changes our minds. It really comes down to whether the camera improvements actually make a really big difference or more of a modest one.

Tonight I’m going to preorder two SS Series 4 watches to replace our Series 2s. That upgrade is a significant one, and will probably feel like the watch equivalent of going from an iPhone 6 to a X. I’m really excited about it.

  1. Termination of the AppleCare+ Plan. You understand that you have purchased an AppleCare+ Plan with funds borrowed from Bank under an Installment Loan. If the AppleCare+ associated with your iPhone Upgrade Program is returned or terminated for any reason, including when you exercise your Upgrade Option, any refund due on your AppleCare+ will be remitted to the Bank as a payment toward any amount owed by you to Bank. If you do not cancel AppleCare+ on your own, you agree that the Bank is permitted to cancel AppleCare+ on your behalf. If the AppleCare+ refund amount is greater than the amount owed on the Installment Loan, Bank will issue you a refund in the amount of the difference to the credit card you used to enroll in the iPhone Upgrade Program.

Hi guys,

A few folks have tried to clarify this in the thread but upgrading is not costless.

(i) you will be paying the full sales tax on the new phone immediately;

(ii) you are essentially reselling the phone at 1/2 the price back to apple when you participate in the upgrade program. You could of course try to sell now for a premium but the case you would get out of the phone would probably be around $100 over what the trade-in value. Because phones depreciate more slowly in year 2, and you would have paid off the phone in the next year, you likely would net approximately $300 next year based on at least my experience in selling an iphone after 2 yrs.

(iii) of course you pay the increase monthly cost which should be marginal.

***

Not telling you not to upgrade but please do so with full information.

That’s a great C&P but I still get refunded directly to me but like I said, you don’t have to believe it if you don’t want to.

Please give us contact information for the employee that doesn’t follow policy and can get issued so we can all believe.

Do you not have to pay the sales tax on the new device? Regardless of whether your monthly payment remains the same?

Yes and that’s why I’m not doing it. It winds up costing a significant amount for 2 new iPhones. So we will hold onto our X for at least another year.

Yes. The Apple Upgrade Program makes it too easy not to, The math of it makes sense.

The main driver, honestly, is that I've already used both AppleCare Plus screen repair instances. Definitely upgraded my case, but if I break it again, the math then doesn't work in my favor.

It’s not a bad idea to keep for an extra year but,
If you really wanted to upgrade and say the tax is $75. They like .20/day
Treat yourself!

On the AUP with an 8+. Skipped X as screen too small. I do LOTS of photo editing on my phone using Lightroom and VSCO. This 8+ could work well for me for at least 2 more years. That may end up being the reason I get the XSM. I don’t feel compelled to upgrade but more screen for editing (seeing the apps update and mention it is just dirty) & I know the XSM would last 2-3 years minimum.

It also helps that the wife, who loves her X, except for FID (hates it), didn’t bat an eye when I did the casual mention of upgrading.

Same. It just makes sense.

We use these things all day everyday. Why not be totally up to date? Especially because it basically costs nothing to upgrade (when you upgrade annually).
As explained multiple times in this thread it does cost to upgrade.
1) You’re paying sales tax on the new device.
2)Depending on Carrier you’re paying a $30-40 upgrade fee.
3) If you waited an extra year to sell the phone once you own it you would make about $400 (give or take $100).

So upgrading now is costing you at least $400-500.

I was going to but according to my IUP information, I’m a month short which I’m a bit confused about because I got the X on launch day last year.

My info is telling me I need to pay £63ish and the upfront payment.

I wasn’t sure whether to do the upgrade but this has convinced me not to for the moment.

Last year the iPhone was announced in September but wasn't available for pre-order because of manufacturing delays until late October, with the actual release date on November 3rd.

//edit. The dates are all US, I didn't pay enough attention to the monetary unit in your post. I don't know if the U.K. release was Nov. 3rd but I doubt it was earlier, and it may have been later.

Let’s see.

I paid $106.32 in tax. (iPhone X 64GB and AppleCare) iPhone Upgrade Program.

I made 11 payments, $549.

I just sold my iPhone X for $750 (could’ve gotten more if I sold 2 weeks ago) and also got $100 back from AppleCare, that’s $850.

I used that $850 to pay off the $650 balance, leaving me with $200.

So technically I paid $450 to rent the iPhone X for a year. That’s not a bad deal.
[doublepost=1537096847][/doublepost]

It doesn’t cost MUCH to upgrade. The phones hold their value tremendously.

Buy an iPhone for $999 plus tax. Sell it the next year for $800/$850 and put it towards the new one. Simple.

Is anyone else upgrading just because they're eligible to upgrade after a year of installment payments either through their carrier or Apple? There's nothing in the new phones that I'm dying for. Love the gold color, but was possibly considering upgrading just because I can and it wouldn't cost anything. Why are you guys upgrading if you are?
Yup. Wife and I both. First month and taxes were around $180 each. Payment for aup went from $46 to $72. So a bit of a hike. We both use our phones a lot. Looking forward to edge to edge display, bigger storage, better camera, Face ID, and all the other goodies. I sold my iPad to cover the initial payment and we can afford the monthly increase. We do plan on not upgrading for several years especially because of the cost of this phone.

Yes, upgrading after one year of AUP makes apple money but it’s something my wife and I use a lot and enjoy doing once every year or two. Very convenient with Apple. Saves a lot of time and hassle.

Only you can make that determination for yourself based on your needs & situation. For me, I knew I was going to upgrade every year and I absolutely hated having to find a buyer for my old phone every year hoping I'd get enough back. Most of the time I didn't get what I wanted and it took a lot of my personal time that I just didn't want to spend on such tasks. So I opted for iUP. I love it. And you can request for 50% of the Apple Care to be refunded to you once you've returned the old phone.

How do you request 50% of the AppleCare refund if you return the phone? Wouldn’t your loan be fulfilled once you returned the phone and made 12 payments?

AppleCare+ is part of the monthly payments, so you can’t get a refund of it, I thought. I know in the early days of the Apple Upgrade Plan, you had to pay it up front, and then they offered a refund on it if you upgraded early? At least, this is what I remember years ago. Now, it’s part of the monthly payment plan. Someone correct me if I’m wrong please.
