what about IMAP?

i havent purchased MobileMe yet but im interested to know if i cant create an @me email but then not use it and get MobileMe to push my Gmail IMAP emails. or maybe even later on create my own domain and then use that for Gmail and then push to MobileMe? i.e. a 3 step process

I don't think it supports IMAP; at least there is no indication that it does.

It basically just supports checking your other accounts email through POP. There is a button on the top of the Mail interface to check your mail.

I think a lot of people are confusing MobileMe Mail as some type of web-based email client. It's more of just the web interface for @me.com email.

ok thanks. so what would be an alternative that has push email (maybe calendar & contacts) that allows you to use your own domain e.g. @richthomas.com.

I think what the original poster is asking is the same thing I
am wondering.

Using MobileMe for push mail is great. The problem is, it only
works with a .me or .mac email account.

Most all of us use other email accounts. How can we we set up
our other email account(s) to go through MobileMe?

Is it a matter of having to forward all received mail from our
original accounts to our mobileme accounts?

Thanks in advance!

mobile me for other mail accounts

I think what we can do is use alias for your mobile me account so even you are using your mobileme mail it looks like its your own e-mail. This you can set up in mobile me. Then as reply address you use that account as well and your set your own host to forward to mobile me. I must say I also thought we could add account info to mobile me so that is would collect and push other mail accounts as well.

There are many threads about this topic. Unfortunately you cannot (as far as I am aware) send from any address that does not end in @me.com or @mac.com. Yes, in Mail.app on your mac you can use a different smtp server and send from your own email address (not mac.com or me.com) but then those will not end up in your sent folder in MobileMe, and I'm not sure you can do this from the iphone anyway (not got mine yet so can't check).
I think the only thing to do is to switch to an @me.com or @mac.com address. Forward all your existing accounts to it; replies will be from your @me.com/@mac.com address.

That is not correct, unless they changed it for MobileMe and it's buried in a preference I could not find. .Mac did not support sending from email accounts in other domains, nor does MobileMe.

MobileMe (.Mac) aliases are just aliased usernames for your me.com/mac.com email accounts only. That's why MobileMe email is brain dead and why I will continue to use Gmail instead, which does support sending email as from another account.

it's crazy that i was just able to set that up with my university email in less than two minutes in gmail. i added the email, confirmed it, and checked the "Reply from the same address the message was sent to" box.

i wish MobileMe had this, then i really would only use it for my email. although i guess the issue really only matters in the web interface, since i can just set up the other accounts in mail.app seperately. still, would be better if they all came to one.

Just behind you
The easiest method is to forward you external mail account to your mobileme account.

You can use customized SMTP settings ith a personal email address on the iPhone or on a desktop client. Not on the webmail though

Such a waste

Mobileme really could be so much more but for reasons only Steve knows, it's not. Here is the best way to get Push Gmail etc.
In Gmail, forward email to your Mobile Me account.
Chose to archive incoming emails

On iPhone.
In General Settings, chose Fetch new data.
Keep MobileMe as push and set Fetch as Manually
Click advanced
Change Gmail account to Manual

When you reply to emails in MobileMe account, click on "From" which should give you the option to change it to your Gmail account.

Not pretty but definitely works and email shows up immediately.
This also prevents duplicate since your incoming mail will never be in the inbox and therefore should not be pulled down at the intervals.

rysmtihaz,

Forwarding all my accounts through GMAIL worked perfectly.

Your iPhone instructions either don't make sense or I am missing
something.

You said go to GENERAL SETTINGS choose FETCH NEW DATA

Where is that under GENERAL SETTINGS?

Google for "hosted Exchange accounts". They usually cost more than MobileMe, but they will give you Exchange push for email, calendar, and contacts. Some will allow you to use your own domain name too.

What I did was have gmail forward all mail to my me account. I have my gmail and me.com set up in the iPhone but I made Gmail inactive so it will not check or use it.

in the Me.com configuration with in the mail settings, click account info and where it says smtp.me.com scroll down till you find smtp.gmail.com and use it.

I can now forward mail to me.com from gmail, pull from the me.com and reply back to the sender and they see my gmail information and their replies go to my gmail account. Then the whole process starts over again

I am having an issue with the push feature right now as it does not seem to be working

criss,

Everything is working beautifully.

I have 2 accounts pushed through GMAIL and along with
my .MAC/MobileMe account I have push mail on all 3.

Your iPhone settings worked great! Now my default GMAIL
address show up in all my emails.

Only ONE problem remains....

My .MAC/MobileMe nickname still shows up in my "FROM"
field next to my default GMAIL address. Even though I set
up an "alias" through MobileMe, it is not transporting to the iPhone.

Other than that no issues with push on any of my accounts.

Thanks for your help.

Change the Name Field and that should fix your name issue

Still working on the push issue. I have not setup my desktops for .me so I am not sure if that is the issue

I think I know the problem you are having...

The second I changed my username on the MobileMe
mail account on my iPhone, all mail sent from it was no
longer being received from any device.

I think I have to change the username back to the default account name.

Question...

On the GMAIL side....

When you set the forwarding you can select KEEP IN GMAIL INBOX or ARCHIVE

What is the difference?

With either setting I still have to go into Gmail every day and clear out the IN and SPAM folders
as it retains everything.

Not sure if this is the problem or not as I set my name back to the default
.MAC account name and my devices are not receiving any mail my iPhone sends
through that account.

My name is the same on the iPhone as it in the .me

I am going to try to delete and recreate the account

As soon as I set my NAME back to my default .Mac/MobileMe
account name on the iPhone the "push" started working again.

I think that's your problem.

Let me know for sure, please.

Yeah, my REAL NAME and .ME account name are different.

I want my REAL NAME to accompany my email address in
the "from" field.

However, as soon as I changed it, all hell broke loose and now
I can't receive mail I sent from my iPhone.

Going to do what you did and just delete and recreate account.

If you have timer, I asked a GMAIL question above.

Just noticed something else...

The changing of the account name was not the problem.

I was sending myself mail from the iPhone to test the account.

Instead of sending to me through Apple Mail INBOX it downloaded
through the SENT FOLDER instead.
