I left it in my inbox as I plan on writing filters in the upcoming days to only forward certain mail. I never touch my spam folder as it auto deletes spam after a few weeks. If you select the archive option then nothing will be in your inbox. The issue with my solution right now is that on the iphone I can't use my gmail folder so each day I'll have to go in and clean up the inbox.

Also I think I may have fixed the push...not real push but after 4 minutes it showed up on my iPhone

I think I know the problem you are having...

Question...

On the GMAIL side....

When you set the forwarding you can select KEEP IN GMAIL INBOX or ARCHIVE

What is the difference?

With either setting I still have to go into Gmail every day and clear out the IN and SPAM folders
as it retains everything.

Not sure about about POP but if your mail cleint can forward it's email to your mobile me account then yes you can get it to your iPhone.

what about IMAP?

i havent purchased MobileMe yet but im interested to know if i cant create an @me email but then not use it and get MobileMe to push my Gmail IMAP emails. or maybe even later on create my own domain and then use that for Gmail and then push to MobileMe? i.e. a 3 step process

Have you considered auto forwarding your "other" address to the @me address?

The problem is that you can't get the "from" address to read as your primary/preferred email address, or at least I can't...

so its not all automatic? you have to add in another step to check mail from another email address, even if its IMAP?

No you do not have to perform "another step"; it will check IMAP accounts automatically. It just won't use push (I gather), but rather will poll like it did with the first gen.

Eluzion said:
I don't think it supports IMAP; at least there is no indication that it does.

Of course it supports IMAP. Not only do you see IMAP as an option when you go to add a new account, but Apple's web site says:
"With support for popular email servers and providers — including MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo! Mail, Google Gmail, and AOL — and most industry-standard IMAP or POP mail systems, iPhone puts email in your pocket."

When you say "there is no indication that it does", where exactly were you looking?

The problem is that you can't get the "from" address to read as your primary/preferred email address, or at least I can't...

I think I actually figured out how to do this...but its not as useful as I thought. Here is how I am setup

1) My Domain Email :

a: My domain.com email is forwarded to my mobileme account

2) Iphone Setup

a: MobileMe is checking Mail (and the other options, but those arent important)

b: I have the same POP domain.com email address that is forwarded to the MobileMe account configured on the iphone as you typically would (setup as "Other Account")

NOTE: If you dont have option B, or the mail account is inactive...the FROM option will not work.

3) How to "Reply As" from MobileMe

a: When an email is sent to my domain.com email, its forwarded to my MobileMe account

b: The iphone tells me when my mail has arrived via the MobileMe PUSH feature (anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes)

*** Here is where things get redundant ***

Because the same pop account is configured on the iphone, as soon as you go into Mail to check your MobileMe account, it checks the redundant POP account and you get the same mail that was forwarded to your MobileMe account. However, it must be active to Reply As

c: Go into MobileMe and reply to the email. Touch the CC/BCC, From: field (it appears to be greyed out, but it CAN be selected)...and click the From area, a selection wheel will then come up allowing you to select to SEND via a different account.

Now, being that the POP account is also configured on the iPhone, you already know you have email via the MobileMe alert you already received. So, this isnt really all that useful, but it can be used as an impromptu alert you have mail in your regular POP or IMAP account before that account Fetches at its scheduled interval. So you can either change the FROM area in the MobileMe reply, or reply directly from the POP/IMAP account.

The problem with doing it this way is that you basically have 2 copies of every email you recieve, one in MobileMe and one in the actual POP or IMAP email account inbox.

It really shouldn't be this difficult to get PUSH emails, and reply as a non @me.com / @yahoo.com address. This workaround is essentially a roundabout way of being alerted your non push IMAP / POP account has mail via the MobileMe mail alert.

It's a workable solution but it seems much easier to me to just pay $20 and get Yahoo mail plus which is pushed to the phone just like .me. You get true IMAP syncing of all your folders as well. $20 for push email vs. $99 and the kicker is the ajax Yahoo mail is superior to the mobileme web mail in just about every way. The down side, no calendar syncing.

With this option you can't "reply as" anything other than your @yahoo.com address (from the iphone of course) ; which doesn't help folks who need @domain.com in the reply field.

You missed a step.

Under Settings Select "Fetch New Data"

Go to Advanced and set your "Reply To" acount(s) to Manual.

Since I have all Push I set the Main Fetch Section to Manual.

I also set my POP3 Account/Password to invalid and set the correct one under SMTP to be sure.

I did this for my Reply to my company Support Email which is really just a list to real address's and it worked great.

rysmtihaz,

Forwarding all my accounts through GMAIL worked perfectly.

Your iPhone instructions either don't make sense or I am missing
something.

You said go to GENERAL SETTINGS choose FETCH NEW DATA

Where is that under GENERAL SETTINGS?

Just under Settings (not General). It may be new with v2 firmware (not sure). Also, go into Advance and set your Reply to Account to Manually.

Contact and calendar sharing among users

Does anyone know if calendars and contacts can be shared for reading/writing among different mobile me users? I want some of my family members to be able to read and update the same contact list.

Preferably I'd like to give permission to specific mobileme users (not just those among a family account)

Anyone know?

Will try it now...

Update..
---------
It didnt seem to be able to connect to gmail but it also looks like u have to click link at me.com to manually check new emails.

Just behind you
Guillaume can you please explain how to do the last bit with the customized SMTP settings?

TIA
TM

On you iPhone 2.0 software go to the Settings > Mail > Add Account

Choose "Other"

Incoming Mail server:
enter your MobileMe address and use imap.me.com or imap.mac.com with your Me/.Mac username and password

Outgoing mail server
That's where you set up the SMTP settings
there I have put the Google Apps gmail settings. That's where you put the different outgoing server. In my case :
STMP: smtp.gmail.com followed by the username and password.

Your incoming mail being identified as MobileMe will still get pushed but then you'll be sending emails from your personal email account

This may be a lot to ask, but one of you could make history
here and do us a huge service if in one single post you can
list a complete step-by-step process of pushing multiple
POP accounts through Gmail and configuration of the iPhone.

This thread is rather disjointed and if someone could post
an easy step-by-step instructional it can easily be referenced
by everyone. Make it easy to follow so that no mistakes can be made.

Please include instructions for using your main POP address
in replies sent through .Mac on the iPhone.

GuillaumeB,

The only problem I am having at this point with your directions
is that on the iPhone, it is not accepting the mail server:

imap.mac.com

PS: I am setting this up under the IMAP tab not the POP tab.

Every time I hit save I get a message asking if I want to set it up without SSL.

See my earlier post. It's in Settings not General settings. By choosing Archive mail in Gmail there is never a second email popping up on your iPhone and you still have access to Gmail in the All Mail folder on your desktop client. This is also the surefire way the correct from address shows up when sending emails. I tried to change the SMTP in iPhone and it was spotty and one time even failed.

I'm still having troubles.

I have a gmail account that I have been using in the past on my Iphone to have 3 POP email with a bellsouth.net domain forwarded to my phone.

Is there really any advantage to having mobile me account and the gmail forwarding or one of the other?

Only thing I don't like with the gmail forwarding is that it's very random in checking the POP accounts, there is no set time that it checks and some conversations can get lost in time sequence.

Thanks

Use mail.me.com instead and it should work.

I set this up similarly on mine, using the same method as GuillaumeB, and it does allow me to use the .me account for incoming mail and to reply using my own domain and smtp server, but mail wasn't being pushed to the account, which defeats the point for me really. If I specify "other" instead of a MobileMe account then there is no option for Push in the settings - only Manual and Fetch.

It's still not working for you? I have it working based on the instructions I posted earlier and push is now work as well.

One other trick is to turn off the gmail account you have on your iPhone. I only have mobileMe active but it is using the gmail SMTP server to send messages from my iPhone to the senders.

Phantasmagoria,

If mail is not being pushed to all the other devices using
GuillaumeB's directions, then what is the point?

I find that everything works fine if I set it up under MobileMe.
All I have to do on the iPhone is use the MobileMe account and
change the smtp server to use gmail.

That method may or may not exactly let me use my default
POP as the return address but at least everything works.

If I am missing something here let me know.

See my earlier post. It's in Settings not General settings.

rysmtihaz,

I think I did this right the first time. No, not under GENERAL SETTINGS
in Gmail, but rather under each new POP account I either added or
told to forward -- wherever it gave me a choice.
