....and as I mentioned previously, someone really needs to write
directions all in one post as this thread is really disjointed. I find
myself having to go back and forth to find bits of information which
others dispute not working and such.

Can someone find the time to post a step-by-step tutorial on
setting up the iPhone to push multiple POP accounts after they have
been forwarded through GMAIL, and that you can reply to mail on
the iPhone with your own POP return address that is not .Mac or .Me?

OK i do have Mail Push here!

If you are using a Mac then it may simpler for you to set this on Mail.app client and then sync the mail account to your phone via iTunes.

It's still not working for you?

Criss,

Your directions worked perfectly using the MobileMe account
on iPhone, using the GMAIL stmp server and turning off GMAIL.

Everything works. I am getting push mail. Just not sure I can
reply on my iPhone with my default POP address. I would leave this alone, but...

...but there are other people claiming you need to NOT use
MobileMe and create an "other" account with a set of directions
if you want to reply to mail with your default POP address that
is not .Mac or .Me

Really sorry to be so redundant on all of this but it seems there
are two camps explaining how to do this and the crosstalk is getting
a bit confusing.

Phantasmagoria,

If mail is not being pushed to all the other devices using
GuillaumeB's directions, then what is the point?

Well exactly, which is why I thought I'd post that it didn't work for me even with the right mail server settings. I'm just trying different methods to see if I can get both push email and the ability to reply using my own domain working. So far I can only get one or the other with all the methods I've tried. It's giving me a right old headache! :)

1.) Go into Gmail and over to the forwarding in the settings tab, set gmail to foward to xxxx@me.com and make sure to archive gmails copy, this way you won't have duplicates.

2.) On your iPhone or iPod touch set up your mobile me account as normal. Also, setup the mail accounts that gmail collects. After those are setup go into the fetch settings are and set those accounts to manual, this way they will not be used except for sending.

3.) When you receive an e-mail on mobile me, you will be able to click on "from" and choose any of the addresses that you have setup including your @me address.

There probably are other ways of doing this, but this is what worked for me.

Understand now. Can't help with that as I don't have multiple POP emails. I do but they are get forwarded to gmail and everything gets a response from my gmail account so they start using that. I saw the need to go to one email address and gmail has been able to do that for me.

Lucky for me my iPhone is personal and my work email is not that important as I use my gmail account for most stuff anyways.

With that said does anyone know if mobileMe or the iPhone can do PGP for encrypted mail?

Well in short your iPhone is only going to push @me.com

Now you can centralized all your external accounts in Gmail and have Gmail forwarding everything to @me.com...

so that'd be

Ext POP> Gmail > @me.com

However it wont be pushed at all because Gmail checks you Ext pop account every hour... so even if you have new message there it wont be in Gmail before several minutes and therefore wont be forwarded to @me.com

So instead you should forward all you pop accounts to @me.com. so that as soon as a message is received it goes to @me.com and then it is pushed to you.

Basically to use your own personal email address to compose a message you have to change the SMTP settings on your iPhone or on Mail.app. I did transfer my settings from iTunes so i did the whole thing on Mail.app

i just realized that in me.com if u click mail -> preference -> other (tab)

then the first option is to setup "External Account" (Pop) !!

i didnt try it yet, but cant we just setup gmail account there then it gets pushed normally?

Will try it now...

Update..
---------
It didnt seem to be able to connect to gmail but it also looks like u have to click link at me.com to manually check new emails.

Problem is that you can only fetch mail from one external account. Many of us have many professional email accounts for different segments of our business.

I suggest you use gmail to consolidate emails. MobileMe does not seem to be a "business" friendly tool. MobileMe mail is not a very robust tool.

I know from my dealings with Apple at a previous job they made some changes that prohibited the use of Macs at a govt location (iSight) and they didn't care, their focus is consumers and they concentrate on that.

Good Luck!

Problem is that you can only fetch mail from one external account. Many of us have many professional email accounts for different segments of our business.

So basically what I'm hearing. Is that even with Gmail it truly won't be a "push" because Gmail only checks your POP accounts at random times.

I think for now I will use the Gmail service with my Iphone, no point in paying the $99 for mobile me if it's not going to be a true push service.

Am I correct in thinking this ?

I'm not going to read through this entire thread, but you can save yourself a headache if you use Exchange. You can use your own domain for that.

That's great and all, but many of us do not have a business account or work exchange that we can use.

It's only true push for @me.com accounts and consequently, email accounts that are automatically forwarded to @me.com

For the small amount of time I use my Iphone for sending out emails, I will just stick with the free Gmail service, there is a rumor that the POP checking will move from a random time to a time where you can set the scheduled time soon anyways.

Mobile me is a good idea, but not for me.

Thanks for everyones help.

NJ, I had the problem of wanting my POP acoounts to be pushed and reply from them in both iPhone and Mac, I dunno if it's the same problem you have but here's what I did and it worked perfectly:

1. In Webmail setup to:
a) Keep the "Mailbox" ability (so you can still answer from that account).
b) Checked the "Discard all incoming mail".
c) Setup Forward to @me.com.

2. In Mail.app added the @me.com account and leave the rest of the exisiting POP accounts I've already have (the server won't send any email to the mailboxes, just to the @me account).

3. In iPhone/iPod Toch: As Sharp told me, set the "fetch" to manually in all POP accounts, but leave them there, so you can answer "from" any of them.

I don't use gmail accounts though, but I'm able to receive push email from any of the POP accounts and answer from them anywhere.

Hope it helps...

no email address works anymore (smtp server disconnected)

I installed a foreign mail address on me.com to be tracked also beside the @mac.com addresses. Now, all my 10 email addresses do not work anymore.
When I check the used smtp servers, they are all disconnected. Whenever I try to send an email, my password will be asked, but will not accept it (asks again).
Friends are telling me, that email written to me just came back...
I erased the foreign email address at me.com but still everything is blocked.
Any advise? Thank you very much!!!

I am going to post these instructions as they seemed to have worked
for me, including being able to reply on the iPhone with my default
POP account that is neither .Mac or .Me related.

If any of you want me to amend any of these directions let me know
in your reply

Create a GMAIL account

1. Go to Google Mail and create a personal account

2. After you have successfully registered, log into your GMAIL
account and click on SETTINGS in top right corner

3. Go to Accounts and scroll down to Get Mail From Other
Accounts. Fill out the information pertaining to the POP3 account
you wish GMAIL to retrieve mail from.

4. Go to Forwarding and POP and select the option Enable POP
only for mail that arrives from now on

5. Repeat above steps for additional POP addresses you wish to push.

Set up .MAC to push on your iPhone

1. On your iPhone go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Add
An Account -> Mobile ME

2. Use your .Mac/MobileMe address and password. SAVE

3. Go back into MobileMe configuration in mail settings, click account
info and where it says smtp.me.com scroll down till you find smtp.gmail.com and use it.

Yes but that would be a missing feature from Gmail and your POP provider, IMO. From what I have read Apple only claims to push MobileMe mail not every mail service out. I think RIM is the same if my memory is correct, it may have changed but I know when I sent my buddy's BB up 2 years ago we had to forward/POP everything to his GMAIL and there forward it to his BB address.

None of these methods work for me as the "main" email address I'm trying to use is not a gmail address. (For the record, I tried it with my gmail address and get the same problem - no way to *automatically, for every reply* have it default to a "from" address other than the me.com address.

Yes - you *can* hit the grayed-out "from" field, bring up the scroll wheel, and select a different from address. But having to do that every single time I reply to a message very much reduces the usefulness of push. I may as well just wait for the 15 minute intervals...

I'm happy enough with OTA calendar/contact syncing, but really wish Apple would provide a very simple way to change the default "from" address so that me.com could operate seamlessly in the BG...

This seems to be the best way at the moment. I hope that Apple see the light and either add MX capability for "personal domains", being able to map user@personal.domain to a mobileme account or just allow sending from an address you've confirmed as belonging to you.

On your mac, in the mobile me account, add your other email address comma separated:

email address: me@me.com, me@mydomain.com

Add the SMTP server which handles me@mydomain.com.

On your iphone, add an imap/pop account for me@mydomain.com but once it's configured, and you've read any outstanding mail, break the incoming mail server hostname. I just changed imap to imp. You can also change the Fetch setting (in advanced) to Manual for that account, but if you don't also break the incoming mail then as soon as you open mail app, it will check mail for all accounts and you'll get another new mail notification.

Then, as others have already posted, you have to change the from: address before you post.

I really just wish that Apple would allow sending from verified accounts.

Something I would like to add to Faye's post...

If you are using GMAIL to forward mail to your MobileMe devices,
you can reply to email on your iPhone with your personal POP
account of choice by doing the following....

On the GMAIL webpage go to SETTINGS -> ACCOUNT

Make your personal POP address the DEFAULT account

In iPhone, go to your MobileMe settings and turn off smtp.mac.com
and turn on or add smtp.gmail.com

Now any mail you send through the iPhone should have your
default email address that is not associated with .Me or .Mac

What I am now trying to figure out is how to send mail through
Leopard MAIL using my personal POP address now that .Mac/MobileMe
has taken over.

This is crazy. I like everyone else has multiple gmail accounts that I forward to mobileme which pulls them on my iphone.

However sometimes, even though my other accounts are set to manual check, sometimes an email pops up in here.

What is the point of the default 'sent from' email address option if everytime it always goes from the .me account.

If I could set one master default (not.me) and then just have to change it for using other accounts then this would be better as 85% of my emails are sent from one account.

Any thoughts on what the default email address sent from is for?

New Information!!!!

Okay, I know I just posted last but I think I have found some missing information:

I have my default email set to myname@mydomain.com (which I use for 85% of my emails)

However when I get an email (to any account via mobileme) and go to reply it still says it is sending from myname@me.com

Obviously I can chose my email to send from but this is a hassle.

But I just ran a test and although it says it is sending from myname@me.com - it actually shows as being sent from the default email.

So the default email setting does work - it just doesn't look like it does

Kinda pleased here!!!
