You do realize that Sirius makes cheap portable radios that can play in your car just as easily as your iPhone would?

Yes, but I don't want one of those floating around in the cabin. I already have a device that plugs into the cd-in and allows me to hook up an iPod or my iPhone, which I can then put away in one of the cubbies out of sight. :)

Keep in mind, some of the channels (maybe not some, but at least Howard Stern) is not available on the free-trial online listening.

Also, thanks for the update! I cannot WAIT to have this... especially since this week my work blocked the Sirius log-in for online listening, at least this way I can listen on my phone.

I know for a fact that Howard Stern is streamed online, because I listen online frequently (I am a Sirius subscriber).

Off the StarPlayr Site?

I have a question - in the last few days the starplayr site has taken off any of the iPhone info, and the windows mobile client has taken center stage. Is that good news or bad news - as i want this app ASAP

I think with their new release of the mobile version their just advertising it. Im sure when the iphone app is ready all you will see is that. The last thing they said was that it was looking good. We would have heard something if something is wrong. This is my most anticipated app.

The more I think about wanting this app, the more I realize that this is the first application that I will actually be upset about the fact that apps can't run in the background... maybe one day...

Also, any word on if this will run in landscape mode?

[...] And I can only hope and pray that the sound quality is up to par (at least 128k). Anything less and I can hardly listen to it.

I'm pretty sure the webstreams on both subs top out at 64k. Fine for talk. Not so great for music. Sounds like radio because its radio.

As is Opie and Anthony. If I dont listen on line, I always have my portable with me at work, gym etc. Cant wait to not have to carry it around.

It'll be GREAT to have this to listen to the b-b-b-boys indoors away from a home dock and not in the city, live. My Inno sure as heck doesn't pick up signal at the gym. :p It kinda makes me want the Howard radio... Stilleto-2 I think, its got the wifi. But I got the lifetime XM, so until they really really merge, not happenin.

Chalk up another win for Opie's BlackBerry. Hit the red button, even the camera will run in the background.

Till the BB version drops, I've still got the BlackBerry on autosync with the Syndication Underground via bluetooth. Linger longer.

Sirius Maxxes at 128K for Music, XM only at 64K.

Talk at 42K on Sirius. Not sure about XM.

We have been told the app works great with backgrounder.

Windows Mobile is now on sale...

And someone asked about channel updates... all you need to do is click an update button in the app... no need for a new version.

Congrats on getting the WinMo app out! :D

Hopefully they'll bring XM's online streams in line with Sirius soon. The damn channels are the same, it has to waste money to have separate streams right? The pennycounters should get that taken care of damnit.

But as Boardroom Jimmy says, Mel Karmazen is a buffon, and he ran Viacom into the ground.

Wow I read something up a few posts threat scared me.

Is this app approved by Sirius as an official streamer? I understand that there are 3rd party streamers for the PC and that doesn't seem to conflict with Sirius business strategy, but this app clearly could.

Unless Sirius is getting a cut of the proceeds for this, they could simply kill this client from releasing once it's done.

If for $1.99 you can buy this app and stream the music, and talk radio what happens to their portable unit sales?

Sirius could decide to push there own client with their own ads built in etc..

I hope this has been thought out and discussed or all this hard work could be moot.

How so? Sirius generates revenue through subscriptions, not through advertising or sale of streaming apps. I would argue that the opposite is true - if this app lets people listen who wouldn't otherwise subscribe, it's a good thing.

I think the question is that it could potentially get people to change from a full subscription to an online only subscription (about half the price). Sirius could lose money there as well as from less people buying their hardware since an iphone could be seen as a replacement for a standalone radio (even though not all channels are available online).

I'm sure the creators of the app have considered this. Not a done deal until you see it in the App store, but it sounds like they are expecting it to be approved.

SiriusXM benefits from more people listening to their service. Initial cost of the radio may be holding people away from the service - especially the high cost portable units. Mine still retails at $199, and I bought it three years ago. I got it on Amazon for $119ish, but that's not the point. But then on top of that I had to add a car kit for $50. I'm pretty sure they include that now...

Having an app out there will allow SiriusXM to reach more people. People love the app store and iPhones. Any watercooler will have buzz about apps now and then. That and XM was developing their own iPhone app half a year ago that nobody has seen since, but their product teases are notoriously long. Look at the XMP3 player, that was pushed as the new hotness for at least fifteen months before it came out. Then there is an official XM app for BlackBerry and some other select phones, even though it sucks, so the company has at least shown interest in mobile web delivered radio before.

Easier accessibility to satellite radio can only increase subscriptions. In addition to the cost of the radio, as mentioned before, that radio has to see the sky. I can't use my Inno at the gym worth a damn, but I can use my BlackBerry there no problem. Inside your house too, if your radio isn't docked with an outdoor antenna attached, you're screwed. (Unless you have the Howard radio with wifi... which is $329 plus accessories... and maybe you have wifi at the gym... but my sub is XM so I don't have that option, blech)

A large portion of satellite radio subscriptions are car-based, and a lot of those cancel after their free three months to one year that was comped with the vehicle purchase. SiriusXM would love for you to take that radio you pay for, and keep paying for it, listen at home and on the way to work, then wherever you go online. It would make Mel Karmazin's day to have this app. It could save satellite radio.

Sirius/XM announced today that rate hikes are in order beginning March 11.

The first one is one that will affect this new app. Previous to March 11, the online stream of Sirius/XM was free On March 11, it will cost 2.99 in addition to your monthy sub price. You won't be allowed to just sub to the online stream without a month subscription already in efect.

This online stream will increase to 128KBPS since it is will be for an extra fee.

The rate and service changes don't affect you if you are under a long term contract. Lifetime is still only $400

So much for this merger being "for the customer". That was a crock of **** from the get-go. I guess at least it'll be better quality, but now I can look forward to coughing up another $36/year.

It never ends.

Anyhow, I'll still get the app. I like listening to my stuff on-the-go.

In other words, even if you bought no equipment, to get Sirius/XM on your iPhone it's going to cost $15.98 a month. (12.99 plus 2.99)

A one-time cost for a radio is nothing compared to that if you decide to stick around.
Sirius/XM, all things considered, should be begging Apple to approve this thing.

Begging, I say.
