I wonder how many people do not realize they are running Sonoma?
not the ones who regally post here, just the usually casually users.
seems to me that :apole: probably did this upgrade for them.
case in point most of the neighbors have no idea what OS they are on with their windows computers.
so... how many? 20? 30? 3 million?

apple should never upgrade an OS without the enduser's request; if that's happening, you should call them for support (and explanation).

but by default, apple does not upgrade OSes. and personally, after 18 years of mac support in NYC, i've never seen it happen once.

Well, I had it happen to me two days ago. I'd never experienced that before, ever. I wondered just what I had done wrong.

But, it seems rather odd that suddenly several people had it happen to them this past weekend.

enough people or apple users to start a thread.......

For the rest of this thread.

seems to me that I have noticed:apple: is acting strange with Sonoma lately since the last update.
there are several aspects of the way we used t control our Mac that need to be changed via terminal instead of using system preferences or now settings and tis upgrade is a example. tis is not why we use MacBooks or minis.

and how many people on this thread have experienced this? (seriously; i don't want to read thru it all again).

what does apple say about it? if each (or any) of those people called apple support, we might get some useful info on what is happening... and why....

calling apple support is not the answer.
let us control OUR computers is.

I have a feeling I will never satisfy or type anything you will like, so just ignore me please.
although we agree that apple makes great products and we love using them and we have the same objective.

I've found that with "incremental" updates (within one version of the OS), some user-selected settings seem to get "reset" back to their original, default settings. Which aren't what I want.

For this reason, after doing an incremental update, it may be necessary to "go back and check" some of your previous settings, such as those in the Software Update settings panel.

avoiding dealing with an issue (ie by not calling apple) and hoping things work out is not productive. but do what works for you, will leave it alone 👍

Apple told me that what happened is impossible. Can't happen.

Besides, I should've upgraded to Sonoma when it first came out.

At least she was very pleasant.

I could go through the trouble of cleaning the SSD and starting from scratch. Instead, I'll just see how things go from here. As I said, I already found issues with the USB-A ports on the rear of the Studio Max, but I found a workaround.

Happened to me today as well on iMac Pro. Hadn't turned on the machine in about a week. Got a notification to upgrade to Sonoma. Clicked on the "X" to dismiss. When I restarted the machine a little bit later, it was all over. Was hoping it was just a security update but it ended up being Sonoma.

The only thing I had enabled in Settings was "Check for updates" and "Install Security Responses..." Everything else was disabled. Although I'm not happy about this, I'll just leave it as-is and see how it goes.

Someone asked for a screenshot of my disk util (I wiped it clean before my Ventura downgrade. Also attached the update settings. Definitely didn't tell my Venture install to upgrade to Sonoma.

The fact that more people experienced a similar thing tells me I'm not crazy after all lol.

Auto-updates were unchecked for me

Be aware that with that last option off your computer is never installing malware protection updates. Generally you do want that one on.

My Mac also updated from Mac OS Ventura to Mac OS Sonoma today, with no input from me. I have downloads enabled, but auto apply of updates disabled (and this wouldn't qualify as an update, anyhow). On with Apple support now.... anyone know how to get this escalated to management as a critical end-user impacting issue?

request upper tier support (or something like that); you can of course let them know that others have reported this as well. keep us posted!

I disabled everything, it looks like no issues here. I run manually check update once a while.

For the record, it just tried to install Sonoma on my M1 Mini as well.
I think I have stopped it, but I have not re-booted yet (I will try after writing this post and update the post).

This is no bug. It looks like a very deliberate strategy and someone should do something about it. I just don't know how.
This could cost $$$ in lost revenue for businesses where Sonoma might break the compatibility with plugins, other software and/or devices.

EDIT: I have rebooted and... welcome to another involuntary Sonoma user. Please MacRumours run an article about this. It is outrageous that Apple are forcing OS updates on users in this way.

My MBA running Monterey has received the Upgrade to macOS Sonoma notification 3 times now, and after seeing reports in this thread I've avoided clicking it at all. Selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu causes the notification to be dismissed. So far, I've not had any unwanted downloads or installations.

This seems similar to the situation experienced by Windows 7 users (back in, what, 2016?) when Microsoft pushed out a notification inviting them to upgrade to Windows 10 and clicking the big red X caused the upgrade to commence rather than dismissing the notification.

after closing the notification, did you stop the download from system preferences, general, software update?

By the way, looks like the upgrade has corrupted my TM disk. Probably irrecoverably.
Today is getting better and better by the minute.

If you think you might be able to help with this, I have started a dedicated thread for it:
