There is no "lock in" for 36 months, you can trade-in your phone with Apple and pay full price if you don't want carrier discount. This carrier discount is credited over the course of 36 months, but you can pay it off right away if feel like it, loosing only the portion of the carrier credit that hasn't been posted yet.
What's true is that it's confusing for many people and Verizon (and other carriers) could do a better job explaining it if wanted to.

There is no carrier branding for iPhones these days and iPhone models sold in the US are the same between all carriers.
I ordered mine on the Verizon app and it let me in 4 minutes early. Timestamp on my confirmation email from Verizon is 8:02am
I preordered through Apple and received my tracking number through UPS tomorrow morning. My phone hasn’t left China yet so it’ll be a couple days before it go through customs.

This year, it looks like VZ used Apple's ordering system on the backend, likely made possible by not using physical SIMs and having only one model for all carriers. So, it's likely that the phones will be following the same route as the ones ordered directly from Apple. Speculating at this point.
I thought Verizon always ships from domestic stock. I've never had a Verizon preorder ship from China. Maybe this year different?
Hello Friends. I am really hoping that I did not make a mistake…. I’ve ordered two 14 Pro’s for my wife and daughter. To be eligible for the discount I got a message saying that I needed to change plans from the Unlimited to the 5G Play More plan. Did I hurt or screw myself agreeing to than plan change?

Oh, well I don’t expect the email text to be updating with time, so of course the email still says whatever it did the day they sent it
