If you look at apple.de (Germany) or apple.com/uk they seem to sell the same version as the AT&T US version which means the ones you buy in Europe won't have the correct LTE bands for anywhere in Europe.

I'm clearly not an engineer for Apple but I really can't figure out why they need two different models in the US. The Verizon version seems to have all the same bands plus CDMA.

Me Too

I just had the same conversation with them. I have an Ipad1 unlimited plan and never bought the 2 so that I could wait for the 4G.

AT&T Rep was very nice and said they were "pretty sure" that i would still be able to keep the plan, but you could tell they did not have any definitive memo from on high. It obviously makes a huge difference. I will switch to Verizon if I can't.....better speed ratings here in Dallas.

I called AT&T and asked if I can move over my iPad account over to the new iPad. She said yes. I then said that I have the original iPad 1 w/unlimited plan and she also said yes.

Then again, all this is so new that can I trust what she said? Remember, new throttled means 5gb on 4G so does that mean will I effectively get 5GB unthrottled on my new iPad 4G for $30/mo?

Yes, I'm afraid to get locked in with AT&T and they jerk the grandfathered plan owners around. I'd move to Verizon otherwise with their plans to consolidate data plans in the near future. The unlimited plan on my iPhone is worthless now and plan to move to Verizon when the next iPhone hits.

Forgive my ignorance, if I get the Verizon iPad, will I be able to still use it outside USA?

iPad 2, no. iPad Gen3, yes.

still waiting to see how current iPad grandfathered unlimited customers are handled. Limited to 3G only?

Well considering they are throttling they may be "nice" about it. What I am hoping is to get unthrottled 5GBfor my $30/mo

No, Verizon doesn't have GSM. It's CDMA like Sprint.

However the VZ iPad has "world 3G". http://www.apple.com/ipad/4g/

Ready to take on the world.
The new iPad offers the most comprehensive support for fast networks around the world. It’s designed with two cellular antennas tuned to 12 different bands that access a larger frequency spectrum. That means you can travel almost anywhere in the world and get online. And your connection is always fast. iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G models for AT&T and for Verizon connect to GSM/UMTS networks worldwide. But if you want a local connection when you’re traveling, just pop in a local SIM card.

i wonder if a VZ iPad w/LTE can be used with an AT&T 3G SIM as the "local" GSM/UMTS SIM. (Maybe no HSPA+?).

Cool thanks for the info. I didn't know that Verizon could now connect to GSM. Is it just for the ipads or do the iphones have this capability too?

IIRC for the 4S there is only one type of hardware that does both CDMA for VZ/Sprint and GSM/UMTS/HSPA+ for AT&T.

EDIT: Caveat from the Apple site: "CDMA available only if iPhone 4S is sold and activated for use on a CDMA network."

No word yet. I put in a call to a tech group in VZW what specifically deals with devices and data. He did not know, but was curious and inquired. Nothing has been announced and no word yet from VZW "higher ups".

From a technical standpoint, it'll work. From a technical standpoint, all iPhone 4S's are the same too.

Carrier restriction may not permit a VZW iPad Gen 3 from using an AT&T SIM in the US, just like the 4S.

Your last point is exactly my fear here.

Yeah: Based on this:

  • Wi-Fi + 4G for AT&T model: LTE (700, 2100 MHz)3; UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
  • Wi-Fi + 4G for Verizon model: LTE (700 MHz)3; CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz); UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

I think that the only distinction is software and licensing. The VZ one has the CDMA 3G turned on at the expense of LTE at 2100.

Got the AT&T one.

While Verizon is very decent and has awesome LTE coverage at an early point in the game, AT&T has LTE in all the big cities I visit and has HSPA+ where I am right now which makes it worth it for me.

Question for everyone here.

Will the original iPad unlimited data deals on eBay not work on the iPad 3? I assume so, since they aren't 4G sims (does that matter) but might I be wrong?

is it worth getting the 4g model if i have a 4g work phone that i can tether?

Errr...no one?

read one post above yours.

I saw and read that.

Doesn't seem like the same thing.

I may be wrong, of course. I don't know much about it.

I've never had an AT&T iPhone or iPad.

Will the 'iPad 1 AT&T Unlimited Data sim' on ebay work for me with a new AT&T iPad 3?

*For 4G.
