Carrier Verizon raising grandfathered unlimited data plans by $20

While I'm not one to side with giant corporations increasing their profit margins even further for no good reason... those complaining about this price increase need to really take a step back and realize that, even at $50 a month for unlimited data (plus whatever voice plan they have), they're still getting a heck of a good deal and should be grateful they have unlimited data plan that can be used for tethering anywhere they go on a strong nationwide network.
Verizon could easily just say "**** you guys!" and simply end the unlimited data plan, losing your business in the process, without even batting an eyelash on their quarterly profits. They don't need you, you need them (and this plan). Be grateful you simply have what you do instead of complaining about a marginal price increase.

^ What's the issue, did you lose your Unlimited Data plan or something? Because your post here is sounding a little angry to me and I don't see why. The OP isn't sounding like a complaint to me. Just that they were able to avoid the $20 price increase for 2 years by getting into a contract. This price hike by Verizon is nothing more than to line their pockets further. If AT&T does this with my Unlimited Data plan I'll do the same thing that the OP did to avoid it. Even if it is just for 2 years.

I'm on contract through October 2016 so I'm locked in until then at least (used my wife's upgrade to order the new 6S+ that I'm using so I didn't get a brand new 2-year contract). Plus I get 20% off my data plan through work discount. So I guess even when it goes up, for me it will only be $16 more per month and not $20. Paying $24 now, would end up paying $40 after contract expires.

I'm not calling out OP at all, not in the slightest. If anything I applaud him for doing something about it and said I would do the same if I were in his shoes.
My post at #3 was simply aimed at those who aren't at the thread yet, but will get here and whine up to high heavens about having to pay an extra $20/mo for unlimited data (when if anything they should be happy they have that plan at all) like so many did in the original 'unlimited data price increase' thread.
The issue is Verizon (without using loopholes to upgrade) already force normal users to forgo essentially 2 rounds of subsidies (2011-2015) in order to maintain unlimited data. That subsidy is worth around $20/month
Now increasing data by $20.
And they say they are being nice by letting u finance over 24 Months. Yet that's zero savings since u still end up paying full price.
So that's a double whammy. Forgo the $20/month subsidy plus increase data plan $20/month. In essence a $40 per line price hike for those under grandfathered plans.
ATT is more reasonable about it by letting u maintain your unlimited data plan PLUS get the subsidy upgrade. Although they are forcing u to go to their Corp store or official website to upgrade now. So it will be harder to get "sales prices" on subsidy phones from 3rd party players.

Yep, on AT&T unlimited you will have 22gb of data no questions asked but after that if you're on a congested tower you will get throttled for a brief period of time until you either move to a new tower or the congestion subsides.
Verizon was actually looking to do the same sort of 'network optimization' policy earlier in Oct 2014 but backed off for the moment. That's not to say they won't ever bring it back in the future though...
I was told that I have to wait until after nov 15 to do a device payment in order to keep my unlimited data. Is that true ?

I just tried that today, unfortunately they wouldn't cut my bill in half. The best mifi "deal" was useless to me. Sprint has nothing that can compare and my third phone is a Sprint I6Plus and it's horribly slow internet compared to my Verizon mifi.

I though Verizon 2 year contracts are no longer available via Apples website?
Last year when people ordered the iPhone 6 there was a glitch on the apple website, and it gave the option of the UDP with verizon. Verizon honored the glitch.
Yeah, I just checked and I see that Apple is doing 2 year contracts with Verizon. The woman I work with said a Verizon rep told her that they no longer allow 2 year contract discounts and that she would have to do their EDGE program instead. I'll have to let her know that she should go though Apple for her upgrade instead.
It's too late anyways. You are now locked into the $50 data plan, and since this week people have been losing unlimited data by following this method.
