People scoffed at the original iPhone’s price, carrier cost, utility and battery life and it was released with a recession looming. You’ll be surprised what people do for things they want.
The iPhone: price of an expensive gadget
Vision Pro: price of a used car

Yeah it’s not the same. People might scoff at a thousand. But just buy in because they feel it’s worth it. But almost $5k for something they don’t even know if they want it? iPhone was a “blow my paycheck” kinda deal. Most people don’t have $5k paychecks where they won’t miss that money much

Let's wait the cheaper Apple Patch Pro.

That’s hot

The Casey Neistat video is a bit cringe at times, but I do find his 'profound moment' at the end of his video quite interesting. Where, after a while, everything 'clicks' and you almost forget that you're looking through a screen. It reminded me of the first time I wore my bi-focal glasses, lol. Initially, I was so aware of them and the way they made things distort at the edges. But, after a few days, I guess my brain compensated for all that and it all became normal!
This video is the best I've seen. First half is hilarious; second half where he describes his "profound moment," as you say, is spot on. Crazy to see the future of computing. Phones, watches, TVs, and (unfortunately, but possibly) movie theaters will all go away. I can see the appeal of going to sporting events and theaters, but why, when you can pay for a ticket and have the best (or multiple) seat(s) in the house? It's exciting and a bit depressing.

Curious about how well this works for train travel. The windows are a lot bigger so its a bit hard to "avoid looking out them." I'm also wondering if the motion of the train will contribute to a greater risk of motion sickness. I won't have another train trip until next month but am excited to give it a try.

How about testing it for dating? I imagine this thing is better than birth control 😂

This is completely different, you bought an iPod to listen to music. that was revolutionary coming from Cd players or mini discs. This is like the 3D fad of movies. You don’t need a vision pro to watch content or listen to music, this is adaptive entertainment and it’s niched at the moment. Back then everyone had a cd player and wanted to listen to music without the cd skipping every seconds.

I’m not sure this is the best comparison. iPhones cost way more now, iPods went above their launch price in a few iterations and i’ve never spent less than 2500 on a Mac. i guess i see your point in that these product prices shocked people at launch… but i feel instead of paying less it just became the new norm lol. I really hope that isn’t the case with the vision though. As much as i love mine I can’t afford a new $3500 device every few years lol
Comparison to the first Mac is appropriate as a cost comparison. In 2024 dollars VisionPro is half the 2024 cost of the 1984 Mac.

When the average middle class American is struggling to pay their bills I think this product segment might take along time to flesh out.
It’s not going to be like the iPhone or iPad. Those devices were easily accessible by the masses. But this one…. Nope.
You can’t use this headset when it’s night time. Tracking completely stops working. It has a two hour battery life and we’re starting to see morons driving with this on, walking around cities with this on.
It’s only a matter of days before this item is clean ripped off someone’s head and stollen.

It’s a cool product don’t get me wrong. But man is this not going to go the way Apple had planned. If anything it’s going to spark interest in the segment more and drive people to AFFORDABLE competing products.
Doesn’t it have IR for hand tracking as well? Should work in the dark

When the first gen iPhone came out it was a $600, that’s almost $900 today, when phones were either free or $100 for a high end phone subsidized(some very high end phones for more) and it did’t have GPS, or even a 1MP camera, couldn’t send images in messages, and didn’t have an App store.

This is $3500 for a full fledge Mac computer with a M2 Processor, plus a dual monitor for other Mac’s. Plus all the other cool stuff it can do. Yes it’s very expensive, but not that crazy for what you get.

I dunno. I think people look like tools wearing this device. Just my two cents.
Curious how Apple or any company's going to overcome this, if ever.

This is a cool product ... for shut-in people, or tuning people into shut-in. And I'm saying this as a VR enthusiast who spent all his savings to build and beefy enough computer from scratch to use with the Oculus and the Vive.

After viewing all these reviews and every use case you could think of, I'm still in awe before everyone who think this is the next thing. I really hope it's not.

Can't you not see that this cuts you from literally everyone around you, whatever the marketing might say? It's isolating to a point no other product did before.

Everyone is already complaining about the youth glued to their phones, incapable of communicating with their relatives, unconscious of what's happening around them. Think also about how as a parent you can still glance at your kid's screen form time to time, and discuss what they're doing not as a way to censor what they do, but to wake up their critical thinking. You need external output to do that.

I can't but feel very uneasy about a product that isolate the person from any outside interference.

VR as an entertainment device for movies and videogames is one thing, because you know it's finite, and you know the purpose. As a parent or a partner, if you see someone in your household playing a game or watching a movie, you know that it's ok to not bother them now since you can ask your question a bit later when the movie is finished or the game ends.
With VR as the main conduit for everything, that's not the case anymore.

No wonder everyone using the AVP in the videos do it alone, and not in the context of a family, or together with a bunch of friends. You just can't, or immediately these uncomfortable questions will arise.

This is dangerous in my opinion, on a philosophical and societal level.

YMMV, and seeing that I'm feeling old and less and less connected to this generation.

It depends on how you look at it. Hehe pun intended.
It’s cheaper than a MBP and a 4k LG TV. If you rarely watch tv socially with anyone else or travel a lot, the cost per use over time could be low.

You can make the same comparison of an iPhone 15 pro max and a $100 Android phone.:)
The functionality of an iPhone 15 and a $100 Android is essentially the same though. Both can make calls, browse the internet, take photos and such. The Vision Pro is neither a laptop or a TV, it's a VR headset with AR capabilities.

I dunno - saying that other VR headsets are competing alternatives feels like comparing the OG blackberry to the iPhone, or the pebble watch to an Apple Watch. Sure, they all look similar, but it's clear in hindsight that one was the future, while the other was a dead end product.

man, these youtube thumbnails are ridiculous. :D It makes me cringe and not want to watch what are they talking about. But I guess this is what most of the viewers need, otherwise nobody would make them like that.

A lot of butthurt people here. Comparing a Kia to a Mercedes IS possible. The Meta quest 3 does 95% of what the Vision Pro does. So it’s a solid competitor and open for comparison.

Comparing easily purchased consumer affordable devices to a niche device that’s $3500 is not even a comparison.
The first iPhone and iPads were easily consumer accessible.
This headset will be exactly like the AirPods Pro max.
Upgraded ever…..2-3 years…. Maybe never.

Careful - people said the same thing about many Apple products, including the iPhone. When the iPhone came out it was much more expensive than other “smart” phones of the time. Many people expected it would fail.

I’m not saying it’s a sure winner, just saying there is a chance it will surprise you.
Apple is banking on their monthly payments, no way the average person will pay for this upfront, however if you noticed, they will always make it sound sweeter than it is by saying *281$ a month. It sounds extremely tempting to get it at *that* price, but you know, it is what it is.
