Yeah I'd need to try it first. Still wouldn't buy now; it's too early for an entry barrier vs cost.

If they can produce a budget model - around $200.. they are going to make a mint, because right now the high cost is the single biggest barrier to entry for easily 95% of gamers

And might as well let them refine the technology while allowing the price to fall. I see serious obstacles for controlling games, as intricately as we've controlled them in the past. I see a controller template on your VR screen as a requirement one that can be turned off once you have controls for a particular game memorized.

Who's first? Report requested. :)
* How are the controllers, do you need to be standing?
* I assume you can run and jump with something equivalent to the WSAD + space key?

Steam VR:
$800 http://store.steampowered.com/app/358040- The VR video is impressive.
Occulus Rift: $600 https://www.oculus.com/en-us/
Are you selling oculus rift? I'm not really understand what is you thread about, but will be great if you'll contact me as I'd like to buy anything of the sort of the realible virtual realiyu gadget;)

Post number one would be a piss poor sales pitch. You have two choices, read through the thread and figure it out or don't trouble yourself over weighty matters clearly over your head, lol.:p:D

: D With my English skills now I understand what the topc is about, but.. unfortunately not always define the advertising manner, or, for example sarcasm (if happen;). So, if the thread is about Oculus, maybe you will give me an advice where will be better to but it? I think that the Ali Express is a bad decision, anything else?)

Now I understand and my apologies. :) I created this thead to discuss the state of Virtual Reality devices in gaming. I do not own one yet and probably will not buy one until they figure out how to incorporate good controls into its interface. In my opinion, there are significant hurtles in this regard.

I have no self control. I was bored late last night, started browsing Amazon. Saw Oculus Rift in stock (at normal price) and I had over $400 in Amazon Rewards so I ordered one. Arrives Monday (coincidentally, the same date as No Man's Sky for PS4), and I'm pretty busy this coming week, so I'll try to provide some of my feedback later once I have some more time with it. The only thing I'm really concerned about now is how it will feel with my glasses on. Maybe I won't need them? Otherwise if it's not comfortable, I'll just send it back and wait until some more come out, or until I can try a Vive.

I've more or less decided that I'm going to go with, eventually, a triple monitor setup (as far as gaming).

I just don't like having the thing hanging off my head, and not seeing the controls directly...

I do like the Viewmaster VR I have, and may eventually get a VR headset, but only for educational/travel type of VR experiences. With that I can just hold it up to my head, like a Viewmaster...

I had zero interest in VR stuff…until I read that the Dolphin 5.0 emulator had support for both the OR and Vive, and that it was now possible to play something like Metroid Prime in VR…

http://www.roadtovr.com/play-metroid-prime-on-your-oculus-rift-cv1-with-dolphin-vr/

I have no idea how good it is (obviously, wasn’t designed for it), but man, the idea just seems so cool.

OMG THIS IS AWESOME. Your post just capped off an awesome night!

I KNOW! They fellow playing it in one video was saying it was actually pretty good, having the “helmet on” in character in Metroid Prime made it feel realistic with the VR headset. I’d like to think that the control scheme would be fairly decent, too, since the regular video game controls were pretty good, but obviously, who knows.

I don’t want to get my hopes up too high, but still…

It’s all early stage stuff, and Dolphin is all just a huge hack anyway (albeit, a pretty decently supported hack that’s been around for while) and I’m sure there is a a bit of a learning curve & experimentation one has to do but…let us know if you try it!

Nintendo Cease and Desist in 3, 2, 1...

(meanwhile, they're seeing how to adapt it to the Nintendo NX console...)

:)

(Metroid with a "VR" helmet would be so awesome on so many levels...)

btw, Metroid in 3D on the New 3DS XL defines gaming greatness!

I had meant to send you to this link below, but the one above may be better, as it shows extended play of one game.

This below is a fellow who started off with Metroid Prime, and then went on to a couple of other games, including SM Sunshine.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/07/03/metroid-prime-in-cybervisors-with-dolphin-vr-emulator/

I had to crack up, the first time he got splatted with acid on his virtual face shield, I thought he was joking when he went to try to really wipe it off the headset…but then he did it again! Oh man...

Unfortunately, they likely aren’t, but I hope I’m wrong.

Ooooh…you have that game? How is it. I’m really tempted, but, the last thing I want to do is shell out $$$ now for a New 3DS.

Metroid Prime: Blast Ball is out as a free to play until "Federation" comes out then you'll only be able to play it on that.

It's just awesome - this and Starfox 3D worth me upgrading to the New 3DS with facetracking...

I was in a Microsoft store and watched a demo of the HTC Vive System ($800) you actually have to stand and move around. To cover distance you have to teleport. I did not try it first hand, but watched the tV screen it was projected on for the benefit of customers. This seems like it has substantial limititations for transistioning into general playability. The employee told me that because you have to move, there are no vertigo issues, and I said but...

I think some of the naysayers need to actually try it instead of speculating. It's amazing. I got tired of waiting for it to hit the mac, so I dusted off an old Supermicro box I had laying around from ~2011. Nothing fancy:

- 3GHz quad core Xeon
- 8GB
- SSD for OS & apps
- spinny drives

had to add the following:

- GTX 1070
- sound card
- wireless headphones
- Saitek Rhino x56 HOTAS
- X-box type controller
- HTC Vive

Holy cow!!! It plays everything I'v tested at maximum settings smooth as butter. Some of the standout experiences (not all of them are fully developed games - more like proof of concept teasers, but impressive nonetheless).

- Elite: Dangerous
- Lightblade VR
- The Lucasfilms Tatooine one (name escapes me at the moment)
- Nvidia VR funhouse
- Steam The Lab
- Surge (surreal music video)
- Accounting
- museum simulations

And room scale is incredible. If you don't have an open layout you'll definitely need to push your furniture to the walls. To anyone curious, I highly recommend you take the plunge. Truly the only drawback at this point is the corded headset. Once wireless headsets hit the market... total immersion. Right now you have to dedicate a small portion of your brainpower to remembering where the cord is.

Try it for yourselves - you'll most likely be amazed!

I believe it's amazing, but the thing is I'd prefer to not spend $800 on something that I have to move the furniture to the walls and I assume does not play ELite Dangerous as other than a POCT. :)

I had 30 years of expectation for vr to live up to at it allready (within reason) lived up to it with the first vive set.

The vive by far surpast my expectations...since I got it I dream of new ways this can be used... tried VR porn for the first time also today... some tweaking with settings and ...wooow again I see this go very far..

Everything I tried so far is mindblowing.

Forget google cardbox and samsung vr... really bad intro to vr.

If you like games or tech or both. 10 minutes with a vive well setup and you are sold....trust me

While I can't dispute what you saying, especially the porn :p, the trick of VR for widespread gaming as we know it will be simulated motion, running, flying, without moving. My impression, this is the weakest link for using this variant of VR (VIVE) in a gaming environment like Eve, ARK, or Fallout 4. The other hurtle will be complex controls in a VR environment such as what is the norm for a flight sim.

A short but interesting article can be found in the Sept 2016 PCGamer about developers working on the obstacles of simulated motion that does not cause nausea. The term presence was used to describe human perception associated with VR. One technique mentioned was tunneling, where peripheral vision is blurred to reduce disorientation in VR.

Yes I remember:) I have been waiting since lawnmower man for VR....seriously.
In my mind VR with the vive etc. And AR with the hololens etc. (Check out james mackie on you tube playing with hololens) is going to change the entire world. This is as big as the tv and internet if not bigger...in my mind.
I had a an enormous amount of expectations to VR and the VIVE and it surpassed it. Everything I have tried so far have blown my mind and give ideas to what the future will hold ..and it will be insane. Where we are going we do not need screens:)
Yesterday I drove the california distance in project cars game in a mustang... I could feel that engine with the subpac m2. I placed an overlay window screen in the dashboard making it look like a buildin tv.
I actually parked the car ingame and watched big bang theory on the dashboard ingame... while taking calls in the build in vive bluetooth connection to iphone (there is an app for that).
This is for real

The future of gaming:
This VR game requires a play area of at least 2Mx1.5M and an area with 360° Tracking.

Seen with Far Beyond:A Space Odyssey VR (Steam) game. I've not yet bought a headset. I assume this kind game can't be played on a regular screen.

I tried the Rift some weeks back, when my sisters boyfriend brought his gaming setup and Rift along over christmas.

Quite immersive, and a better experience than I had anticipated. But it is also apparent for me that there's still work to be done. First of all, the headset, while comfortable, is a bit too heavy for long term gaming. But surprisingly, what annoyed me more, was the amount of sweating with the headset on.

Gaming wise I just tried out ~15 small games made for VR. Nothing major, but enough to get various impressions. I could definitely see the immersive gaming potential, but I could certainly also see the amount of gimmick games needed to be weeded out. My favorite experience was Lucky's Tale, a simple platformer. Being *in* the game was just amazing, and I love platformers like that.. Give me a real Banjo Kazooie experience, and I would pick up a VR on my own. Or something like a 3D Final Fantasy. Or Zelda. Yum yum!
