Thanks for the update, very helpful! Have any iPad apps (like Home, Calendar, etc) been updated to native? Did you notice any speed increases, or improvements with passthru?

I also was very disappointed with the lack of iPhone mirroring - if any device needs that, it’s the Vision Pro.
Native Apps: not from what ive seen. sill listed under compatible.

Passthrough is a bit buggy. Used it for about 3hrs today and get very strange lags and sometimes weird bars when I look down to the keyboard very quickly. Can't see any difference in Passthrough to be honest.

Scrolling is much more smooth, especially in the menu. You can really notice the improvement.

Speed is about the same. But haven't had any issues with slow speeds...

There is keyboard visualization while immersed in VisionOS 2 beta. And it works!
How to activate?

I think It’s in Settings -> Immersion
Will confirm later when I wear it.

I guess I was underwhelmed by the spatial conversion functionality at first because I had already loaded an app that gave me the ability to convert photos and videos into spatial photos and videos. But now that I think about it, the ability to do so right from your library on the fly seems pretty fire. How fast is the conversion? Does it work well for videos?

I virtually never install an OS beta, especially this early and on a device this expensive. The last thing I need is to brick my AVP. (In the past, AppleCare used to not support devices with beta OS versions on them, not sure if that's true now.)

This is really exciting! I take a lot of photos and enjoy looking at them in VP. so it’s covering all of the photos but only for VP I assume? Meaning originals are preserved?

Does the new Photos app handles Folders and Albums well? I have a lot and have put a lot of time into creating them.

Thanks for all the good info!

Originals are preserved during the creation of spatial video from old 2d photos. You can toggle between the two views, it also seems to save (though not sure where, or for how long) the new computed view because toggling between the two is instantaneous once the original conversion is done (which takes a couple of seconds with a graphics show between).

And.. while my tests were far from comprehensive or done in a controlled fashion, I probably viewed about 200 in spatial view and all of the files I taken with an Apple device (even a computer screen shot during a chat) 'worked' (had the option to convert) but there were a two imported files (out of maybe 20) from the web that did not give me the spatial conversion option. No clue why, though they tended to be lacking in detail, bland. but to my eye equally bland photos from the Web did convert. Will have to do a larger more representative sample :)

as for the folders and albums thing.. I found their new approach to be annoying (though it was late at night lol).. but first of all required patience to index photos first (took about an hour for my library of 20,000) before I could even find my albums (this might have been on me and the late hour, but I dont think so). Annoying in that before Albums was listed as a top tier choice, now they are buried in the new system and I had to scroll down to find them. this was on the AVP. not sure, maybe its done better in IOS or MacOS, but at least on the AVP they seem to favor their new wiz bang way of doing things thats likely to cause some friction at first. Remains to be seen if this can be changed in some settings.

thanks for letting me know about AppleCare and beta os versions, will need to look into that. seems counter productive on their part.

when I heard about the spatial conversion feature I didnt think much about it, I was testing the new hand gestures when I noticed it in photos and gave it a try. I was very impressed. cant compare it to other programs, but it was easy to use (click the new rotated square icon on the upper left) and boom.. a new spatial pic that looks great. especially portraits (though maybe a bit too much in your face, because I tend to get close for portraits).

It was fast.. maybe a couple of seconds or thereabouts? they had some fancy graphics in between that seemed to indicate a focus on what it thought they main point of interest was..they were entertaining but the thought crossed my mind that perhaps they take up time? once a conversion was made, toggling between converted and unconverted and back to converted was instant.. so whatever its computing it gets saved (but not destructive).

Didn't think to try it on a video... and I am at work now, will try later.

for me, landscape pictures worked better (especially when you went immersive mode), and the sharpness of the pic really had an impact.. it seemed to magnify flaws like grain from low light. and it cropped in a bit, so you lost some of the surrounding (not much) detail. For me this was a slight problem because I tend to be very selective in how I frame pics to what I want, especially come in close during portraits, and losing some of that to my eye made some of my pictures 'too close.' but thats really a matter of taste.

Recognize keyboards is great. I use the Magic Keyboard and now I don’t have to dial back the environment to see the keyboard.

Can’t yet mirror my iPhone to the AVP. I’ve turned on Airplay receiver on the AVP, but no luck yet.

Converting photos to spatial is great. Does NOT work for videos.

AppleCare will ask you to downgrade to the latest release version when possible.
Unless the beta was illegally obtained, they cannot denied service to anyone with a device running a legitimately obtained beta.

Me neither. AirPlay may be broken or only compatible with the betas and higher.

Now there’s an option to AirPlay to the Vision Pro. I couldn’t get it to work last night, I may have been very tired or simply it’s still in the works.
I think the source device needs to be on iOS 18 in order to airplay to the Vision Pro

The issue here is that I don't think there is a way to downgrade the AVP (similar to the Apple Watch)

To downgrade you will have to bring your AVP to an Apple Store, or buy the Developer attachment so you can do it yourself. I may end up buying it if I get stuck. But so far, the betas have been a move forward, even if it‘s in small steps.

I’m noticing a significantly better eye-tracking. For example, I’ve always had problems on YouTube with trying to click their full-screen icon at the bottom right of the video. But it seems to work much better now.

And I love the ability to see videos on web sites in Environments now. BTW, to get that feature (on YouTube, for example) you need to click the full screen button on YouTube.

I have never been able to get People Awareness to work; that feature where if somebody walks by you their image will appear through Environments.

AND…it still doesn’t work for me in 2.0

thanks for the clarification... I actually did something legal for a change (joking, unless you count speeding). But yep I am a registered developer.

I went ahead and bought the $300 developer strap. Pricey, but I like to play with Betas too much. Gives you the ability to roll back, or to restore a bricked device. The actual process is simple once you get past paying for the strap!

Probably good to have around, though it seems the visionOS 2 beta is pretty stable. I installed it in a fit of "i can't wait for it" last night and am still exploring. Bora Bora is now my go-to immersive background — it's just so relaxing.

Many of the other new features and enhancements seem good, and everything feels more fluid, with improved eye and hand tracking. Some notable omissions:
  1. No app folders: shouldn't be that hard to do.
  2. Limited choice of immersive backgrounds: I don't know what's involved in creating them, but Apple should provide many more.
  3. Limited iPhone compatibility: I at least want to be able to make or take calls on the AVP.

I just installed the 2.0 beta. When using the Mac virtual display they Mac keyboard passes through an environment, but not the apple keyboard and mouse that I have paired to my computer via bluetooth. Am I missing something?

I wonder if updating to 1.2 has somehow blocked us from 2.0.

It showed up for me but I had to go back in to Settings - Software Update / then swap back to the standard non-beta profile, then switch to the 2.0 beta profile and it showed up. I didn’t install it last night because I didn’t have a lot of time left before bed once I figured it out but I’m installing it now 🤞🏻
