Texas, unfortunately.
RE: ports -> You should be asking yourself why your devices need ports and working on eliminating those devices or finding an alternative to ports. Even if it's a must-have just buy an adapter. The future is wireless.
Yeah, no thanks. Everything wireless requires either a battery or an external power source. Adaptors are just another thing for me to lose. More hassle/clutter that I'd rather not have in my life.

The total size of all of those apps according to Apple is ~150 MB, Angry Birds is larger. Most people wanted to remove the apps so it's one less thing they have to skip through when searching for an App or if they use a replacement for it. As it is built into iOS it cannot ship without it and if you deleted the App as you would an App Store app you'd break core functionality of your device. By hiding the application, we can all find happy middle ground. As for you, if you don't like it, get a larger capacity iPhone.

That's part of it. They've come out and said it's also partially security related. The iOS update is cryptographically signed as a whole. If you uninstall mail.app, the signature fails to validate. For that to work, Apple would have to sign each version with every permutation of built-in app configurations, and the user would have to download the correct update that matched their configuration. Or, do it the way they did and delete the icon. Guess which way is actually better for 99.99999% of users.

Like I said in my OP in this thread, Apple stopped being "for me" five or six years ago, give or take. And that's fine, plenty of people still like what they are doing. I don't hate them for going in directions in which I'd rather not follow them or anything

Ah I see. Well it's good you recognized that a few years ago.

iTunes music is DRM free as far as I'm aware. I've bought tracks in iTunes that I now have in alternative music players. Just copy it from your iTunes folder.

If that helps at all...
Unfortunately, music isn’t the end of iTunes DRM. iTunes movies and TV shows still have DRM. And as far as I know, all the of the DRM removal programs cost around $50. Either that, or they just play the video and record the screen. I could see spending $20 on such a program, but $50 is a bit much. Regardless, iTunes is a pain in the ass if you want to use Linux (including OSMC and Ubuntu Touch) or Android.

I wouldn’t completely switch over from Apple. I’ll use my 2011 13” MacBook Pro as long as it lasts, though I’m not sure what I’ll do after it dies. But I’m sure I’ll switch to an Ubuntu phone in a year or two if the iPhone 7S or the iPhone 8 doesn’t have a headphone jack. To me, the headphone jack is a big deal.

This is sort of like asking:

"Who is ready to abandon screwdrivers and move to coping saws and hammers?"

Software is a tool; people are so utterly binary, it's not a forced cult, you use one tool for one job, etc...

Where is the "What THE? What does it even matter?" option?
-_-

you and your BSD :p

BSD is superb, but then, so are all binary-based computing structures :p

Done, switched. To TrueOS Desktop.

I'm not familiar. What kind of limits do you face with choice of applications? No, I'm not thinking about switching from Apple. The difference between Windows and Mac is still night and day, with the Mac being the light. So much Windows crap and vulnerability. These days everyone wants subscriptions to protect you from Windows vulnerabilities.

I left Apple stuff a while ago and went back to Windows after my 2011mbp, at that point I was all in (airport extreme, iphone 5s, ipod and only used itunes).

I'm finding that one eco-system does not work and a mish mash is the way to go.

I think it can and does work, but that doesn't mean it works for everyone.

I have an iMac (as noted in my earlier post in this thread), but I find myself in windows more often then not it seem. While I see the advantages of a single platform/ecosystem. I believe Apple's direction and implementation on that ecosystem may be the result why you don't think it works.

I have an iPhone, and at this point, I don't see myself or my family leaving that platform, I have my Mac but I'm also looking at a SurfaceBook for my mobility needs. I think picking the best tool for the job is better then just picking based on the fruit logo on the outside.

I'll agree with you on that it can work for some not for others, I'm definitely in the 'others' category and I'm finding a mish-mash works best as no single eco-system has it all (at least for my needs).

Apple's fell short for my uses but it was not all Apple's fault the biggest driver was compatibility with works software and whilst I initially boot camped (even had parallels), the drivers were not always the best and the fans, trackpad and battery life became a frustration and then the Surface was announced which was the product I've been waiting for.

I jumped back to M$ eco-system buying: SP2, Lumia 1520 and Xbox One with Onedrive and OneNote this was all brilliant and suited my productivity needs, but as you know WP10 is in declining and unless this Surface phone is a beast (if it is even released) I'm having to break the eco-system and get a IOS or Andriod phone, this is easier as now M$ is making good apps for office, OneNote and Onedrive on other devices.

The phone that currently ticks all the boxes for me is the expensive Note 7 but I'm waiting on the wearables (gear 3 vs Apple watch 2) to make my final decision as for me Apple have the better overall leisure setup and I'm happy to go iPhone +, watch 2, Apple TV and Ipad combination as those devices work well together.

When it's all said and done it could end up as
M$ SP4 or SP5 (main computer)
Note 7 and Gear 3 or Big iPhone + Watch 2
Ipad, Apple TV, ITunes - Leisure

Not much with Windows really makes me want to travel down that road - despite the fact that I have tried a couple of times.

I do have a "grass is greener on the other side" thing. Often that just isn't the case when coming from OS X over to Windows 10(because it's the current OS and the one I have a key for)

I have an SP3, and I think I want something with a larger display. Its been a good computer but I have run into wifi issues on occasion. From my googling, it seems something that has affected that generation fairly regularly. The SP4 and SB may have had that issue as well, but it seems MS has sorted that out, at least for those models.

Do apps have to be written specifically for it I presume? I'm ignorant.

Is there any platform where apps don't need to be specifically written for it?

Generally speaking though if something is available on Linux it's available on the BSD's. There's been a lot of work over the last couple years to build a kind of compatibility layer for BSD but that's not there all the way yet but the community has done an amazing job porting apps over and it will only get better as time goes on.

The cool part of the BSD's though is they feel more like OS X than Linux. Linux is an amalgamation of interchangeable parts and it feels that way when you use it. The BSD's were created as a whole and are cohesive which is pretty cool.

If I were to make the major muscle movement to learn and live with a new OS it would be freeBSD but I like my Linux and I'm generally lazy so there will have to something explosive in Linux land for me to change.

I don't mind that at all. I just want to hide them from cluttering up my screen space.
[doublepost=1466365014][/doublepost]

The RAM thing is a little annoying but in my practical life it hasn't been an issue. My macbook Air with 4gb of Ram lasted for a good 5 years.

RE: ports -> You should be asking yourself why your devices need ports and working on eliminating those devices or finding an alternative to ports. Even if it's a must-have just buy an adapter. The future is wireless.

Sounds all very edgy and hi tech, but clearly spoken by a non engineering person. Anyone worth their salt knows that you don't use wifi over ethernet just for the sake of having wifi, if not for security reasons then for utter lack of integrity and reliability and throughput of your connection.

The future is not a sci-fi novel where you can make up stories of utopian technology that never fails or tangles, the future is what WORKS, and what works well is wires for the most part and wireless when wired is impractical or impossible (cell phone, wifi) - reality is that wires are "honest" design - simple, cheap and VISIBLE - you see them, their physical presence and connection assures you they are there and you know what's connected to what without any hassle.

Only a stupid designer eliminates tried and tested, solid ways of doing things in exchange for an overly complex replacement which achieves the same goals, just because it's their fantasy.

99.9% of that is placebo stuff. The only thing I've installed beyond what comes packed in with Windows 10 is Malwarebytes, and I just run it once every 6 months or so for poops and giggles. Haven't had a single virus or malware pass by me in umpteen years.
