Apple does not wait for OS releases to release new hardware, even a few months. This happened in 2007 with the aluminum iMacs (August release) and Leopard (October release). They will just get a special build of Snow Leopard if there is unique hardware. Thunderbolt, Sandy Bridge and probably updated graphics are definitely worth waiting a few weeks, IMO. This could be as big a change as going from Yonah to Merom in late 2006.

Did they give some sort of discount on Leopard to those that purchased the iMac in August? Is it pro-rated? For example, if a normal upgrade is $130 and it is free for those that purchased an iMac under 30 days, would be it $65 for those that purchased an iMac 2 months before an OS release?

I know man. I'm clicking refresh on my RSS feeds in Google Reader (Engadget, AppleInsider, Macrumors, TUAW) every 5 minutes of my day. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and blearily eyed check if there's news on Google Reader on my iPod touch. I've got a 2009 Mac mini and looking forward to getting a 27" iMac for work. I will use the Mac mini for personal use but hook it up to the iMac and use it as a monitor with a mini displayport cable. hurry up Apple!

(I live in Japan and I'm also eagerly awaiting news of the delayed iPad 2 launch here)

Predication

I've been predicting April 12th for a little while now. Final Cut Studio 4 will premiere at the Super group thingie. So wouldn't it make sense that they show it off on a Quad Core i7 with Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt?

The new iMacs things shipped a few weeks ago and should be in stock at the stores. The 12th is a Tuesday and why not target the Pro App Users with the iMac update? So many high end editing houses use the iMacs, as well as the Mac Pros, that it makes sense to get 2-1 coverage and sell hardware with the new FCP. Final Cut probably doesn't do much for their bottom line, but the iMac is still an important part of what apple does.

So it makes perfect sense to use FCP to show off what the new iMac with Thunderbolt, and perhaps SSD.

See you on Tuesday!

This makes perfect sense! Hopefully that is what happens as I have my money ready for a new imac. My First!

I've been waiting for the new iMacs for a couple of months now.

I think I am going to get a 2nd hand one this week, probably a year old 21inch.

There are a couple of reasons for this,

it will be my first mac so it's a cheaper way to see if I can get on with it.

It will also allow me to see if 21 inch or 27 inch is the way to go.

Finally if I like it I can then give it to my wife when I get the latest imac also there won't be a rush to get it when they launch

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

They could just show off the new Final Cut Studio on a MacBook Pro if they don't announce the new iMacs by then.

The current CPU architecture is like 4 years old, the upgrade to Sandy Bridge is a massive difference and will give your computer years of extra lifespan...

Also with the new graphics drivers that came out it's very likely the GPU's gets a significant upgrade as well.

All in all you're waiting for:

- Sandy Bridge CPU
- GPU Upgrade
- Cheaper SSD BTO options
- Thunderbolt

Worth it.

Back to School Special

Well in that case, if the need is not urgent, why we dont wait for the new iMac AND OSX lion released altogether. U can save some $$ from upgrading 10.6.x u have to 10.7 if u wait because it's going to be preinstalled on next gen iMac

Another reason to wait until the summer is that Apple will offer a Back to School Special which usually includes a free iPod Touch. My son bought a MacBook last summer, got the student discount ($100 or $150, can't remember) and they threw in an iPod Touch. I've been waiting for the 27" iMacs to come out for months now and am trying to be patient enough so that I can take advantage of the special. If you don't need a new computer right away, I'd suggest you do the same.

What date does the back to school special usually begin?

New imacs around the corner but not a rumor in two weeks! Isn't that strange? I think that is a sign that they are not coming this month.
Probably a mid-late May release. :(

Plenty of rumors. Been numerous reports for the past two weeks of iMac and Mac mini supplies drying up, stores are out of stock and no new shipments of current gen product.

The last week of May. This year, I would guess May 24th or 31st.

Yes, I’d like to know also. And can anyone qualify for this special or do you have to be a student?

Officially (and simply), yes. The person who will be using the Mac, and not necessarily the purchaser, should be enrolled in an institution of higher learning. This is also true for Apple's usual education pricing.

Yeah i've heard of low stocks and yes that's a good sign i must say. But there have not been plenty of rumors, I would say plenty of predictions.

Well the "mac rumors" tab should be separate from the iOS device news i think its ridiculous the level of coverage the they get compared to the macs.
:(

I agree! No focus on macs:(, but then again they need rumors about the macs to write about rumors:p

True but because media coverage focuses so much more on iOS devices now people wont be looking for/at Mac rumors as much.
:(

Sad panda.
