Most likely IMAC will be released before Lion. Only reason I say this is because June is WWDC and we know that Lion will be out then, also June-July is usually IPhone update period........too much going on so April-May seems logical for Imac refresh.

How do we know that? June isn't the only month of summer. It's not far-fetched to think that Apple will demo it in WWDC like they did with Snow Leopard and then say that it will ship in August or something.

Last year, Mac Mini was updated in June and iMacs in July. This iPhone chaos theory doesn't really hold up, at least it didn't last year. Yeah, April-May still seems the most logical but June and July are plausible too.

Sandy Bridge is worth waiting for. Thunderbolt = meeh....

sandy brige worth waiting for? sorry no

The processors include a "service" called Intel Insider, which the company claims is "an extra layer of content protection", and despite claims, is a form of Digital rights management (a technology that inhibits uses of digital content not desired or intended by the content provider).

sorry but i still rip my whole dvd collection on HDD's just because its easier to access the movies and i dont want anybody controlling that ability

In addition, Sandy Bridge processors have security features that include the ability to remotely disable a PC or erase information from hard drives. This can be useful in the case of a lost or stolen PC. The commands can be received through 3G signals, ethernet, or internet connections

"first Mac virus" found i will read next , and i did not not write OSX virus , as most run windows now on their Mac's thats made easy , ...i guess we might see sandy bridge Mac's with erased HDD's or Mac's shutting down themselves soon then ,
someone out there is working on a way to "activate" those sandy bridge feature for sure ;)
even if it is only the government who wants that ability

why sandy bridge anyway ?sandy bridge will be slow and outdated by second half of 2011 or summer if you like , so a sandy bridge iMac would be outdated before it even is reaching the apple store

from wiki :

Ivy Bridge is the codename given to the 22 nm die shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture. During the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) on September 13, 2010, Intel's CEO Paul Otellini mentioned that Ivy Bridge processors may be introduced as early as in the second half of 2011. According to early roadmap details, Intel is estimating that Ivy Bridge will offer a 20 percent CPU performance advantage over Sandy Bridge.

On the graphics side, there will be support for DirectX 11 and OpenCL 1.1, and Intel is targeting a 30 percent graphics performance and 20 percent overall performance boost compared to Sandy Bridge. It seems that Ivy Bridge might get 16 EUs. Ivy Bridge will also support PCI Express 3.0. A new Panther Point chipset, to be released with the Ivy Bridge platform, will offer native USB 3.0 support, while Cougar Point chipsets will be backwards compatible with the Ivy bridge platform.

Intel has completed designing Ivy Bridge processors and is planning to showcase them during Computex Taiwan 2011 in June. However, the processors might not come out until 2012.

sandy bridge processors are for people who need protection of themself by third party

Paranoid??

Paranoid??

He does this all the time making excuses why no one should be excited about the new powerhouse that is about to drop. Probably, because he can't buy one.

I am looking forward to it. We all know it's going to be an amazing unit judging from the performance of the new MBP.

I thought Steve Jobs was the CEO ....when did this bloke Sandy Bridge take over??

he got the job on january 9, 2011 and since then apple is owned to 100% by intel and to commemorate that day the new intel processor got the name sandy bridge

hope you did read my signature ;)
of course steve still is in charge, despite his health problems
and even the other steve has told reuters that he would come back if he gets asked , after all he was co founder of apple

Exactly my thoughts.

Yes, I’d like to know also. And can anyone qualify for this special or do you have to be a student?

Students or staff (Elem, JH, HS or college) are eligible. With the Back to School package you not only get the education discount but the free iPod and $100 toward a printer which costs $99. Pretty good deal if you can't wait. I was thinking early June for the special but another poster said last week of May. Either way, I'll wait. Here is the site for the education discount:

Sandy-bridge is overrated. Also, why buy sandy-bridge iMacs now, when its likely that they introduce ivy-bridge next year which is supposedly more powerful yet again?

The problem with that is you are always waiting and not buying anything, if you waited all that time for ivy bridge, what's a few more months wait for Haswell/Rockwell, it's a vicious circle.

Some people here tend to forget that iMacs are not exactly cheap computers, so EXCUSE ME PRINCESS if i cant/want afford a new System for around 2000€ every year.

I know what you mean. And maybe I explained it wrong. All I meant was that I am quite happy with my Late 2009 iMac. I didn't upgrade Last Year, and I will probably not upgrade this year since in my opinion sandy-bridge isn't worth it. However, next year with ivy-bridge and possible other now things i might seriously consider an upgrade.
...also it's not that i would need the additional power sandy bridge would give me. The heaviest duty on my iMac would be Gaming on Windows 7, and since i can play Crysis 2 on Advanced with 1920x1080 i dont see the necessity for a better computer.

Who the hell said you had to buy a new imac every year? Settle down. Nobody here forgets they are expensive.

If you don't need/want one then don't buy one. Nobody here said you have to upgrade.
Everyone's needs/wants are different. For some it's a worthy upgrade and for others it's not. For me it's entirely a want. I already have a i7 in my desktop machine but I can certainly max out a sandy bridge CPU with the encoding work I do. But I don't "need" an imac. I want. But everyone is different.

Will the new iMac update be worth waiting for? I will only use it for basic entertainment (Internet, iTunes, email and light documents). Will I really be missing out on anything earth shattering.. Anything that my basic needs will see real benefit from?

PS. This will be my first Mac. I have an iPhone 4 and 1st gen iPad.

Yes, wait. The refreshed iMacs will cost the same as the models they replace and will be supported longer than the old models.

I would say we agree on this here. For me its also more want than need. But i can see that uncontrolled wanting can lead to too much expense.
As for the annual iMac Upgrade, i would certainly like to upgrade but from our current information its not really worth it in my opinion.
However i can assure you that if the next release has more to offer than just Mr Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt, for example finally a Desktop GPU, i will be one of the first to buy it.

A desktop GPU would certainly be nice. There is speculation that with thunderbolt providing direct access to the PCIx that you could make external desktop video card adapters that would function as if you plugged the card in the computer itself. It will be interesting to see if this is truly possible and if it ever happens.

Why reading your post i started drooling...

Btw...is there a valid reason why Apple never built in Desktop GPUs?

Thunderbolt is MUCH slower than PCIe. PCIe 2.x x16 slot provides up to 64Gb/s of bandwidth while TB is limited to 10Gb/s. It might be enough for lower-end GPUs but higher-end GPUs will definitely be bottlenecked by that.

Heat and space.

I understad the space thing, but heat...the iMac fans are not that weak...

I have a feeling something will happen next week. Maybe not the release of new imacs but we will definitely get some new info of when the release might be.
