Most likely IMAC will be released before Lion. Only reason I say this is because June is WWDC and we know that Lion will be out then, also June-July is usually IPhone update period........too much going on so April-May seems logical for Imac refresh.
Sandy Bridge is worth waiting for. Thunderbolt = meeh....
sandy brige worth waiting for? sorry no
sandy bridge processors are for people who need protection of themself by third party
The processors include a "service" called Intel Insider, which the company claims is "an extra layer of content protection", and despite claims, is a form of Digital rights management (a technology that inhibits uses of digital content not desired or intended by the content provider).
sorry but i still rip my whole dvd collection on HDD's just because its easier to access the movies and i dont want anybody controlling that ability
In addition, Sandy Bridge processors have security features that include the ability to remotely disable a PC or erase information from hard drives. This can be useful in the case of a lost or stolen PC. The commands can be received through 3G signals, ethernet, or internet connections
"first Mac virus" found i will read next , and i did not not witer OSX virus , as most run windows now on their Mac's thats made easy , ...i guess we might see sandy bridge Mac's with erased HDD's or Mac's shutting down themselves soon then ,
someone out there is working on a way to "activate" those sandy bridge feature for sure even if it is only the government who wants that ability
Paranoid??
why sandy bridge anyway ?sandy bridge will be slow and outdated by second half of 2011 or summer if you like , so a sandy bridge iMac would be outdated before it even is reaching the apple store .
I thought Steve Jobs was the CEO ....when did this bloke Sandy Bridge take over??
OK thanks for the updatehe got the job on january 9, 2011 and since then apple is owned to 100% by intel and to commemorate that day the new intel processor got the name sandy bridge
How do we know that? June isn't the only month of summer. It's not far-fetched to think that Apple will demo it in WWDC like they did with Snow Leopard and then say that it will ship in August or something.
Last year, Mac Mini was updated in June and iMacs in July. This iPhone chaos theory doesn't really hold up, at least it didn't last year. Yeah, April-May still seems the most logical but June and July are plausible too.
Yes, Id like to know also. And can anyone qualify for this special or do you have to be a student?
Sandy-bridge is overrated. Also, why buy sandy-bridge iMacs now, when its likely that they introduce ivy-bridge next year which is supposedly more powerful yet again?

The problem with that is you are always waiting and not buying anything, if you waited all that time for ivy bridge, what's a few more months wait for Haswell/Rockwell, it's a vicious circle.
Some people here tend to forget that iMacs are not exactly cheap computers, so EXCUSE ME PRINCESS if i cant/want afford a new System for around 2000 every year.
Will the new iMac update be worth waiting for? I will only use it for basic entertainment (Internet, iTunes, email and light documents). Will I really be missing out on anything earth shattering.. Anything that my basic needs will see real benefit from?
PS. This will be my first Mac. I have an iPhone 4 and 1st gen iPad.
Who the hell said you had to buy a new imac every year? Settle down. Nobody here forgets they are expensive.
If you don't need/want one then don't buy one. Nobody here said you have to upgrade.
Everyone's needs/wants are different. For some it's a worthy upgrade and for others it's not. For me it's entirely a want. I already have a i7 in my desktop machine but I can certainly max out a sandy bridge CPU with the encoding work I do. But I don't "need" an imac. I want. But everyone is different.
I would say we agree on this here. For me its also more want than need. But i can see that uncontrolled wanting can lead to too much expense.
As for the annual iMac Upgrade, i would certainly like to upgrade but from our current information its not really worth it in my opinion.
However i can assure you that if the next release has more to offer than just Mr Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt, for example finally a Desktop GPU, i will be one of the first to buy it.
A desktop GPU would certainly be nice. There is speculation that with thunderbolt providing direct access to the PCIx that you could make external desktop video card adapters that would function as if you plugged the card in the computer itself. It will be interesting to see if this is truly possible and if it ever happens.

Btw...is there a valid reason why Apple never built in Desktop GPUs?
Thunderbolt is MUCH slower than PCIe. PCIe 2.x x16 slot provides up to 64Gb/s of bandwidth while TB is limited to 10Gb/s. It might be enough for lower-end GPUs but higher-end GPUs will definitely be bottlenecked by that.
Heat and space.
