Point taken. Don't you think that Jobs' passion was a big part of his making Apple a success? Yes, in making any type of investment, you need to be non-emotional enough so you can pull the plug on a bad decision but in the process of creation, there has to be passion as a driving force.

Same for me. I know the iPad 3 is nearing an end and now I am faced with the research for it's inevitable replacement. At this point, I am thinking that when the time comes, I may get a Surface Pro.

Jobs was a person driven by annoyance. Annoyances such as poorly optimized products, slowness, ugliness, mediocrity, etc. etc.

If Cook had an OUNCE of annoyance in him, he'd be doing OK. But it seems like he doesn't give two *****. He only cares about meeting the shareholders' expectations by milking the same cow over and over again.

A hint would be nice, but with Vega still slipping seems like WWDC would be the next big chance.

If Vega arrives and they don't release with it for whatever reason, I hope they just kill the Mac Pro quick so everyone can move on with their lives.

Or replace it with an upgradable Mac Pro.

Good discussion going on at hacker news at the moment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13720507

Interesting read and good to see plenty of rational level headed discussion. A lot of similar complaints to those being made here so I am glad to see these feelings are wider spread than just Mac Rumors.

Apple really needs to pull something big out of the bag this year on the desktop as clearly a lot of loyal customers have jumped and plenty more are on ththe precipice.

I wouldn't get my hope up.

^^^ a million thumbs.

A hint, teaser, something, or just go ahead with the eulogy...

Putting aside things I hear from the inside... The Thunderbolt 3 transition would have been the right time to kill it. Keeping the Thunderbolt 2 Mac Pro alive by doing things like supporting the Ultrafine 5k on it reeks of them trying to keep the current model alive until the Thunderbolt 3 one ships. (They even modified the display at the Apple Store to hook the Mac Pro up to the Ultrafine.) But if they end up discontinuing the Mac Pro anyway the amount of effort they're putting the into keeping the 2013 model going is just going to look silly.

A few days ago, I ran into a dude who said he was a software manager at Apple's hardware development team. I asked him about a new MacPro. After the obligatory "I can not discuss that" he asked "What about the new MacBook Pro, have you tried it?" From the way he said it, I took it to mean They consider the MBP a viable alternative.

At this point, I simply accept there will not be a new MacPro. I'll keep my 4,1>5,1 6-core until the wheels come off and at that time I'll see what my options are. Hopefully, It will still be a while before that happens.

@goMac I hope you are right. Do you know how they modified the MacPro to run the lg ultra fine 5k display? A breakout box or some other adapter? Or just running at a lower resolution? (I am more curious what the response would be for a customer trying to buy the pair).

If they ultimately discontinue it like the Thunderbolt Display I'll be really hesitant to invest anything more into the Apple world. In my opinion we never really had to worry about roadmaps (prior to 2010) becuse they were reliable cycles in the past, and it's arguable there was even a greater need to be competitive then. But pulling out of established accessories, and potentially the Pro will really have the power users jumping quick.

That sure sounds like another indicator that the Mac Pro may be on the chopping block. It also sounds like Apple really thinks that the MacBook Pro can replace the Mac Pro as evidenced by the images of multiple drives and monitors hooked up to one. Wonder what they really think of the iMac?

The Ultrafine 5k supports 4k input over Thunderbolt 2 with the adapter Apple sells. It's a little deeper than that though... macOS has been modified so that the Mac Pro will render a 5k image, downsample it to 4k, and send it to the display. It looks like a Retina 2560x1440 image, just slightly less sharp.

Then the Apple Store modified their display to sell the Mac Pro and Ultrafine 5k as a pair. That's also just strange. They're doing a lot of work just to keep the 2013 going.

My read has been everyone knows that the Mac Pro update is running late and is a mess, and they're hoping maybe they can keep everyone placated with the MBP update until they get their house in order. Basically: If you want a machine that's updated regularly and is current, maybe you should consider the MBP. Same way I read the iMac statement.

I knew the Thunderbolt 3/2 adapter could work with a downscaled resolution, I was interested in if they did anything betind that to truly get it to 5K. Thanks for the feedback. It's weird and almost devious to sell that display to a machine that can't fully support it. You could have some serious consumer legal issues if they were pushing it hard, I hope thy explain that it would be more for future proofing the display-rather than the Mac Pro that can't use this specific display to its full potential to any customer (and as I write this I feel sorry for any sap that buys a Mac Pro off the shelf at these prices-anecdotes in the forum lead me to believe they aren't selling many in stores as is anyway). Last time I was in the Apple store (AirPod launch-mid/late December) they still had a Thunderbolt Display hooked up to the Mac Pro in the corner.

What if Apple is waiting on Ryzen to make Intel lower their prices? All things come together, new (and possibly cheaper) CPUs available, new GPUs, TB3. And there we have it, an up to date, great machine.

The same trick works on other machines that have Thunderbolt 2 and 4k support. But the weirder thing is Apple selling this as a feature at the Apple Store with the Mac Pro (and the Mac Mini.) If they were cancelling the thing, they should have just done with when they discontinued the Thunderbolt Display, instead of dragging everyone along with a half assed Ultrafine solution.

I mean, if the thing was basically discontinued, why go through so much effort to keep up the charade?

Hi all,

Well, I'm into week 2 of owning a refurbished Mac Pro 6.1 (2013). After waiting for so long, I got tired of waiting for Apple to refresh to 7.1.

I like my machine. Although it is "old", I expect it to give me many years of solid service. I view this purchase more as a purchase of a productivity tool as opposed to an investment. Like a car, a computer immediately begins to depreciate in value at the time of purchase. Of course, I've read about all of the GPU issues that people were (and continue to) experiencing. However, so far it's going fine for me.

Given the direction that Apple is going in, I strongly suspect that the Mac Pro and Mac Mini lines will be eliminated. It's quite apparent that the main focus of Apple is on iOS products and services.

Funny, I have a reoccurring dream about the Apple store and a Mac Pro in a corner.
When I ask about an iPad and being told it's the next greatest thing since sliced bread I'm in the top store
When I ask about a new 7,1 Mac Pro with PCIe slots and being user upgradeable I'm in the bottom store. In the bottom store I'm told in slow motion, "If we have anything like that it would be in the back in the dark!"

Those are a lot of tables for the three products that Apple sells....

When (if?) they do release a new pro system it's going to have to offer a hell of a lot to entice pros and enthusiasts back.

I hope they release a half sized cheese grater with a few pci-e slots and space for at least 4 sata drives.
They could have easily halfed the size of the old Mac Pro, why they went with a cylinder based Mac Pro is crazy looking back on the whole (ongoing) fiasco.
